As much awesome new technology has been developed in the fashion world, the industry really hasn’t changed much in the past couple centuries. True design always takes a human hand to accomplish, whether it be handmade lace of past centuries, hand beading, which is continually used, or the new 3D printing technologies of today, in which the pieces still need to assembled into a garment by hand. “Manus X Machina” is a great exhibit because it shows the importance of the métiers, or trades, of dressmaking. We need to remember the hands behind the design process, and place value on keeping craft alive and value the art of making truly quality designs. | Left: House of Dior. Autumn/winter 2005-06. It’s time for our heartbeats to collide I’m so happy to share the first photos of my finished Belle cosplay!
Construction stats: ❤️ Dress is self-made from sateen with the top and skirt being separates Skirt features 60 fabric petals ❤️ I also made the arm warmers, wings and bow which snap onto the dress There are about 10 different types of flowers on this costume, including peonies, lilies, roses, chrysanthemums, poppies, hydrangea, bird of paradise and even a lotus flower! ❤️I trimmed my Zero Two wig for Belle, originally from @ardawigs Contacts are Candy Blue from @uniqso ❤️ I did the face makeup freehand from reference using Kryolan cream paint
Progress photos of Belle are in my story highlight @brian_b_boling Signed prints on my website!
Rarely has a film, character and costume design sparked such an obsession in me so fast! After watching the film, I quite literally put my life on hold for a week to make this costume from scratch because I couldn’t exist without it ! I’ve worked on hundreds of costumes and only felt this kind of overwhelming urge a handful of times (the last time was Shao Jun). Now that I finally did a photo shoot, the inside has been satisfied lol. I’m excited to wear Belle to @katsucon_ninjas!!
All the love to @studio_chizu for making such a gorgeous film and to @gkidsfilms for bringing it to theaters here!
I’m currently making Belle’s red flower dress from the Mamoru Hosoda anime…. bought materials less than 24 hours after I watched it ♀️
I knew it was going to be a pretty film but I was really affected by the thoughtful story and characters! It is his best film for me personally.
The decision to cosplay Belle is entirely predictable given my history of cosplaying idol singers, especially ones from the Macross series. Sharon Apple, another virtual singer who moves the world with her songs, was one of my first cosplays ever. I have always had a soft spot for dramatic anime where music played a central role so I was 100% invested in Belle 2 minutes in. Without a doubt, Hosoda was inspired by Macross Plus, so this cosplay is my own little homage to Sharon Apple and the power of music.
When it came to choosing the outfit, there was no doubt. The flower dress completely personifies how “Belle” the avatar is perceived within the virtual world of U, and I am very weak to red costumes in general. I opted for a deep red home decor grade sateen and will use some darker taffetas to create a bit of color interest in the petal dress. And I ordered a myriad of flowers which I will airbrush, manipulate and arrange into that bursting bouquet.
I love that cosplay can STILL inspire me to throw myself into a project with reckless abandon. I’ll be working on Belle all weekend so check my stories for progress updates! And go see the movie this week before it leaves theaters!
Those of you who follow me on Instagram (@xameliax) will already know this exciting fact – my mum is teaching me how to sew! Mum is an incredible seamstress who used to make wedding dresses for people as a hobby, in her spare time(!).She has so many skills it’s insane as has always tried to teach me but sadly I was a stroppy teenager who didn’t have the patience or inclination to learn and refused these free one-on-one lessons – so silly - but I’m happy to announce that I’ve now come to my senses and I am finally learning to sew!
For my birthday we chose a vintage dress pattern and some adorable polka-dot fabric to work with and for the past month we’ve been sitting down together once a week for a few hours learning the basics (and some more advanced skills– trust me to pick a tricky one!) on my very first dress. Mum has recently retired from a long (and sometimes stressful) career as a high-school teacher so before now, because we were both so busy, we never really spent a lot of time together. But now these lessons are the highlight of my week and it’s so lovely not only to be learning a new skill, but also to be spending some quality time with my wonderful mum. Apparently I’m a natural which is a real honour to hear and we’re making really good progress – I can’t wait to put this dress on and wear it with pride partly to show the new skills I’ve gained but mostly as a treasured piece representing the quality time mum and I have shared together. Hopefully they’ll be many more to come after this!
Come follow me on Instagram @xameliax to see all my updates and see how I’m getting on – I can’t wait to show you the finished product!
Here’s a throwback to one of my first Cosplay builds ever. Dark!Lili from Ridley Scott’s 1985 Film Legend. Completely underrated and not loved or recognized enough. Could totally remake this better now though my sewing skills have improved.
Did you guys see @vancityreynolds new Advert for Match.com? @match I spot a familiar looking Devil there. ;)
