It’s done! My 2020 project ❤️
Okay I admit, the hat is still missing and I want to add some boning to the jacket. I might do another petticoat and a proper corset (right now I’m wearing bra+ underbust
BUT it is wearable and it’s the thing that took the most time to finish. Normally I rush things because I want something new for an upcoming event. This time I just wanted to do a bustle dress. (And I have no clue where to wear it ) I did a lot of handsewing and tried to make sure that there are no visible machine seams on the outside.
Historical accuracy was not my goal, but I had 1880s in mind as inspiration and if I can trust my limited knowledge I’d say it’s at least historical adequate Opinions?

WiP of my bustle dress gown. Made a mock-up of the bustle/apron and I think it’s too long. It’s Truly Victorians 365. I have to admit that I absolutely don’t understand the instructions for the plaket, I just use my own
For the final version, I’ll use the same blue/grey fabric I used at the jacket and maybe I’ll add some more of the lace I got from @finefrenchlaces (see last picture). I will shorten it in the front and back a bit to have more freedom when walking and to allow the underskirt to flounce a bit more
For now, I’m glad the skirt with all the pleats is finished.

These 2 sweet cicadas, Leo and Lluvia, were made earlier this year for a truly lovely individual (first 3 pictures belong to them). I love that they’re both out there having adventures
Elizabeth Keckley was born enslaved and lived in Dinwiddie County and Petersburg as a young girl. She purchased her freedom working as a seamstress after moving to Missouri. With her freedom, she became the most sought after dress maker in Washington D.C. Her talents as a seamstress, both before and during the Civil War, led to her being chosen as the personal dressmaker of Mary Todd Lincoln. Over the years, both women became good friends and Mrs. Lincoln looked on Elizabeth as one of her closest confidantes during the White House years.

Now that our beautiful Bride is married, I can finally share the photos of her gown. This was a tricky alteration because the dress had to be taken in by two dress sizes. To add to the challenge, there was intricate embroidery over the bodice, which we had to work around. There was also a little Flower Girls dress, which just needed a nip & a tuck. I am hoping that when she has time, she’ll send me one of the official photos, rather than the candid one I have of her putting her shoes on ;)

I made this scarf as a Christmas present. It didn’t take me long to sew it and I’m pretty happy with it. It has a lot less mistakes than my last project.

I made the skirt of this outfit. It took me forever to make this skirt due to unrealistic expectations and finding time to sew. Originally, this was supposed to be a 2-piece outfit. It was going to have a matching crop top and a skirt. I started working on the top, and I quickly realized I do not have the skill/experience to finish this. I was never really taught to sew. I’m learning to sew from YouTube videos and Tumblr. I was disappointed that I could not finish my vision for this fabric. I stopped sewing the top, and I adjusted my vision for this project to my experience level. I’m really happy and proud of myself with the outcome of this skirt.
There are so many beginner mistakes that I made like taking into account how long this project will take, having correct measurements, sewing correctly, having the inside/outside of the fabric match, being patient, the type of fabric I need, and how to sew accordingly to the type of fabric. So many mistakes.
My problem was that I thought I could just sit at a sewing machine and whip something beautiful in 2.2 seconds. I learned that sewing is going to take time and I can’t have high expectations for myself especially since I don’t have the skills yet. However, I really enjoyed sewing. I’m currently looking for another inspiration. I might go back and correct my mistakes or I’ll leave this skirt as it is, as memory of my first sewing project.

.Sewing Lessons With Mum.
Those of you who follow me on Instagram (@xameliax) will already know this exciting fact – my mum is teaching me how to sew! Mum is an incredible seamstress who used to make wedding dresses for people as a hobby, in her spare time(!).She has so many skills it’s insane as has always tried to teach me but sadly I was a stroppy teenager who didn’t have the patience or inclination to learn and refused these free one-on-one lessons – so silly - but I’m happy to announce that I’ve now come to my senses and I am finally learning to sew!
For my birthday we chose a vintage dress pattern and some adorable polka-dot fabric to work with and for the past month we’ve been sitting down together once a week for a few hours learning the basics (and some more advanced skills– trust me to pick a tricky one!) on my very first dress. Mum has recently retired from a long (and sometimes stressful) career as a high-school teacher so before now, because we were both so busy, we never really spent a lot of time together. But now these lessons are the highlight of my week and it’s so lovely not only to be learning a new skill, but also to be spending some quality time with my wonderful mum. Apparently I’m a natural which is a real honour to hear and we’re making really good progress – I can’t wait to put this dress on and wear it with pride partly to show the new skills I’ve gained but mostly as a treasured piece representing the quality time mum and I have shared together. Hopefully they’ll be many more to come after this!
