Mum’s home-cooked Spicy Chicken with Caramelized Onions and stir-fry hairy gourd (Benincasa hispidavar.chieh-qua) or 毛瓜 in Mandarin. The matchsticks sized hairy gourd is cooked with minced pork and prawns to give it sweetness.
After dinner snack of Durians though I can’t remembered what varieties they belonged to. The king of fruits is creamy and sweet, just the way my mum like it.
My mum’s and my Birthday are just one day apart so sis bought two 15cm cakes (S$18.90 each) from Emicakes to help us celebrate the occasions. Well, I guess most of you already know which cake is mum getting and which one is mine. :D
TheD24 Durian Fantasy Cake comes with two bite-size D24 durian puffs sitting on top. I messed up during the slicing processing but it does comes with a thick filling of D24 durian between the two chiffon layers. The cake is light and fluffy soft with a strong scent from the king of fruits.
TheFudge Madness Cake has a glossy finishing of chocolate along with edible pearls and white chocolates. It has three denser chocolate cake layers sandwiching two layers of chocolate fudge filling. This cake is rich but not overly sweet with a strong chocolaty flavour from the chocolate fudge. Yum, my kind of a sweet treat… :D

Inktober day 6: today’s one-word monster is “Durian”.
The durian: a silly and scary-looking fruit with strong-smelling, soft, flavorful gooey insides that pack a punch.
It definitely doesn’t sound glamorous though to say you’ve been terrorized by a durian monster.

Nature has the best design sensibility ever . Right? This is my first ever musang king durian variety. And i had to try it. It is supposed to be a very dense and strong in flavor durian type. I found it to be very sweet, creamy and flavorful. I get durian about twice a year. I seem to crave my local dates far more than any of the imported fruits which is awesome. However if you have never had a durian before it’s definitely one of those things that you gotta put on your bucket list. Not durian smoothie or durian cake or candy though. Pure durian. And a good durian at that. Think of a good peach vs a yukky, bad, unripe, brown on the inside peach. You need a good example. Theres nothing like a good durian. Also you gotta forget all your cultural conditioning and have it with an open mind. I personally love the smell and i find it far more pleasant smelling than onions, sourkraut, garlic, meat, cheese or some other common western foods. It’s one of the most magnificent fruits called the king of fruit for a reason. It tastes like vanilla custard. Very rich and creamy. The smell is pungent, sweet and funky, kinda typical for exotic fruits. The health benefits are endless.
