I recreated an old photo of power lines my electrician friend Jesse has on his fridge

My best friend (who is an electrician) is renoing his bathroom and I’ve been helping him out with the plumbing. Tonight Jesse said I should do my drawing on the inside on of the drywall. This is hidden in the wall that houses the electrical panel and the Bathtub. A little surprise for next people who rip open the wall

Yes, another gold audio fuse but this one has a pink LED and a bit more embellishment - four struts connected to two bracket rings.  It does remind me of an old valve.  It has very thin gold plate on the caps and central fuse - apparently it doesn’t degrade which effects sound quality in high end audio equipment.  On this one I used a pink LED.  The photo does make it look more purple but in reality it is more pink.  I don’t like altering product photos too much.

As you can see the light is on when the post is inserted into the silver battery pack.  The batteries can be replaced by screwing the top off. When I build these it’s so exciting turning it on for the first time - I was thrilled when I saw this one light up.  Perfect for that theatrical costume or just that night out.  It will certainly grab attention.

Alberto Tadiello joins us on 7E

Alberto is an Italian audio/electronic installation artist. He creates various autonomous sonic machines and installations that at some point undergo a climactic state. "I’m interested in creating a physical experience without implicating a physical contact,” he says. “What I want is to make something epidermic that borders visual and auditory sensations, becoming nearly tactile.” Alberto also uses aspects of sound like echo and resonance in his work. He says he wants people to “bring along the residue of what they saw, heard, and felt” after they experience his art.

EPROMs (Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) is an installation consisting of wiring, transformers and electric motors which drive music boxes. Like the limited use memory chips that inspired it’s name, the art piece eventually wears out and changes over time, starting out as a “fairy-like” soundscape and eventually disintegrating into a cacophony of worn out mechanics.

Who wired my fucking house. Give me a fucking name. I just wanna talk

Ya know those articles that went around a while back about how Millenials know less about repairs/home repairs than boomers, and its framed as a “haha these idiots can diy a bathroom rug but HIRE a roofer, how incompetent!”

Because everyone I know who has a house has at some point sat on the floor in tears because nothing is up to code and they’re a heartbeat away from losing everything in a fire and I’m like. Maybe we don’t know less, maybe we just know more and have less hubris

You are exactly right. I have some old DIY books that are REALLY casual about things like “here’s a one-page tutorial on how to knock out part of your foundation to add a cellar door!” “Here’s how to run a 100 amp subpanel yourself!” And i’m like cool! How did anyone survive the seventies!

Look, contractors are expensive for a REASON. Doing a job correctly takes skill, knowledge, and experience. Doing the job wrong can literally be deadly. It can be fun and handy to learn DIY home repair, but like … There’s definitely a limit!

…we are the children of the DIYers who didn’t burn

Wanted to reblog this to comment that yeah, the NESC has come a long way since the 60s.

I have some vintage DIY electrical books from around that time period I wanted to share, to give you an idea what the boomers and their parents thought was fun and safe to DIY in their own homes.

“35 Building and Repair Projects Electrical Handbook” 1963

“Electrical Repairs You Can Make” 1960

“Home Electrical Handbook Volume 3” 1956

A lot of the DIYs they have, while functional, are not safe to be done by inexperienced and untrained people who don’t own or have training using proper safety equipment or have like… y'know… licensure to do home wiring. This is why homes from the 70s and earlier are fire hazards (not to mention the lead solder in the pipes, the asbestos insulation, etc.)

It’s not that younger generations CAN’T do DIY, it’s that we know when NOT to.

Do you guys have any other great resources that you’d like to share and/or are you enjoying this type of content?

I’m fed up w/ my teachers not giving me a vocab list for all their electrician’s jargon, so I’ve decided to make my own

this is just from my revision today, not even including any of the stuff I’ve got notes about in my notebook from the rest of the year smh
