“One thing that’s come up a lot in our sesions lately is how I struggle with how judgey our queer community can be. I feel like there is this cancer on progressiveness, and I find it unsettling how quickly millennial queers can condemn other queers for not being as progressive as they are. It’s like people get shut down for saying the wrong thing before they have a chance to explain themselves. We didn’t come into this world knowing everything. We were all blank slates and learned as we grew.
It’s like we no longer know how to have open dialogue with each other. You either get it or you don’t, and if you don’t you’re condemned and cast out of the community. There are so many double standards within our community. We hate it when conservatives shove their ideals down our throats and yet we do it to each other.
Through therapy and lots of practice, I am learning to speak my truth, to articulate myself in ways that will be received constructively. In the way I know how I continue to work on having an open dialogue with both myself and my community everyday” - @lmheinsdale - Issue 6, The Mental Health Edition - Digital & Print copies available, link in bio for purchase.

“Masc-presenting or not, it’s this skin, it’s intersection with being butch, and this voice that can often be the source of my body being a target. More often than not, I am mistaken for a black male. And as much as I would love these duelling orbs to be off my body, I do not want to be a black man. When I moved to Portland, locks finally cut, I felt fear in a way I had not experienced before. Yes, more fearful than being in NYC, or Chicago, or being in a foreign country. Fear because here, more often than not, I am mistaken for a black male, and they shoot us (not to take away from the lives of our sisters lost as well) and often there is just a pass, almost a judicial nod of permission that it is acceptable as it all too often goes without punishment. I think about that in my daily movements in this city and I would be lying if I said it didn’t wear on me.”

As a young adult, I felt so alone and confused in my observation of how vile the majority of the queer community spoke about and treated butch womxn. And then I created this magazine and consistently heard the same narrative from other folks across the entire globe. To be validated in that observation has been empowering and motivating, a powerful force which affords purpose to all the work we do. Quote extracted from @frankietuffragette story in Issue 5. Helen Harris was featured in Issue 3 and spoke to some of her experiences in the workplace. Shes centered in this heartbreaking NPR article below about queer folks being discriminated as employees of tech industry conglomerate Dell.
Intro article below, link follows. “Helen Harris doesn’t wear makeup or feminine jewelry. She mostly dresses in men’s tailored suits and men’s shoes. She’s gender nonconforming and identifies as a woman. And, she says, that’s nobody’s business.

Which is why in late 2015, when she started taking hormones to become more masculine looking, she did it quietly.
Harris, 37, is a systems engineer who worked at Dell, selling technology to major companies and helping them set it up.

But she says she had a tough time moving up at the computer company and was assigned to a lengthy training period, while colleagues were promoted.

She says she got heckled by co-workers when she gave presentations. And, Harris says, one of her instructors kept telling her “people have to like you for you to be able to do this job. He kept saying stuff like that to me.” .

“The public bathroom is a gauntlet every butch must run. As I entered the women’s room at the back of the McDonald’s, two elderly ladies were on their way out. One of them was struggling with her walker as her counterpart washed and dried her hands. I did my best to slip by them and into a stall, afraid of kickstarting a ‘This is the women’s room’ confrontation I didn’t have time to finish. “Let her by,” the hand-drying woman goaded as I edged past, “…she looks so nice.”
“She does,” her friend answered, a kind murmur of approval that warmed me from my blistered toes to my blush-reddened ears. I laughed in my stall, calling a surprised “…thank you”, their way as they exited. I looked at my reflection before leaving the bathroom, an unstoppable grin emblazoned on my face. I chuckled again as I lifted my briefcase back onto my shoulder, emboldened and elated by the women’s unexpected reaction. I checked myself out in the mirror one last time, snapping a quick picture to show my friend. I looked good.“ - @lenadoubleyou - Issue 5, The Work Edition. by @esthergoodboy

“I’ve known that I love girls since I was six, maybe even younger. I wrote poetry for a blonde, curly haired girl who reminded me of the princesses in the Irish fairy tales that my mother would read to me before bed. She crumpled up the paper and threw it in the trash before going to collect her snack. The longer I knew of and denied my own lesbianism, the more it came out in my art. I wrote a high fantasy short fiction collection throughout my entire high school career and drew pictures to go along with the story. I never showed anyone my work, especially my mother. The whole book was about lesbians who died for their love, lesbians who were beaten and struggled in silence as their want consumed them. Just imagine: a lesbian pulp fiction with a Lord of The Rings backdrop, but no men and lots of warrior queens wielding swords and falling in love with butch pirates.” - @lemonliu32 - From Issue 5. by @esthergoodboy

In order to affect change we need folks in traditionally gate kept hetero environments to create the tools (like research) that enable us as a society to progress and evolve. Michelle tirelessly works and utilizes her unique skill set and position to push for workplace equality, lgbtq+ rights and social change. To be queer and to be employed by these systems can sometimes feel like a conflict in values, but remember, if it’s not you holding space, it’s just gonna be another cis het white man. Do not be intimidated by the gatekeepers. Stand your ground. Hold your space. Push your agenda. “Being butch has always been a happy place for me. Have people made my life a living hell because I, when you really boil it down, prefer pants to a dress? Absolutely. But, does my place of rest, when my brain has settled, and my heart is in a calm rhythm, feel like my most true and connected self? Absolutely. Do people tell me at every show how much it means to them to see someone that looks like them standing in front of them, let alone on tv (in admittedly the tiniest amount)? Yes, they do. These are experiences I am eternally grateful for and wouldn’t have if I “fit” into someone else’s idea of what it is to be a person.” - @rheabutcher - Directly quoted from our Work & Professional Edition (Issue 5) by @esthergoodboy

“It was my grandma who taught me the right way to iron a shirt. It was a necessary skill, because the uniform at my alma mater – an all-girls, Catholic high school – was a button-up shirt underneath a tunic so long that it rivalled a nun’s habit. My grandma also told me, between explaining the right pressure to use on particularly tough fabrics and how to iron a perfect collar, that this skill would be invaluable to me for when I was living with my future husband. In her role as nurturer, care-giver and keeper of the peace, she had ironed everything. My grandpa’s shirts before he went to work, to golf, to church. All four of her children’s school uniforms, the bed sheets they slept under every night, even handkerchiefs. Ironing has become more of a ritual than a necessity for me. There’s something sublime about it, to treat the clothes that enable me to express my true self with care and respect. It evokes a nearly ceremonial calm in me – handling the fabric, smoothing out every crease, barefoot on the kitchen tile standing over the ironing board in just my undershirt and boxers. It brings me back to my body and back to my butchness with every movement.” - @honkytonkbutch .

“I came out to my family by letting them know I was moving in with her. We had to buy new sheets because we’d both been sleeping in single beds at our parent’s places. We got a Ninja Turtles double quilt set and based the colour scheme of our linen around it. When we bought a washing machine we made a fort out of the box. We painted it and made a periscope with those little make-up mirrors I no longer used. We got pet rats and named them after song lyrics. We pinned her first attempt at pancakes to the noticeboard in our share house. She got that motorcycle and didn’t even make me feel bad when I dropped it. She wrote poetry on post it notes. We danced in the kitchen.” - Katie Morrison recounting her first butch 4 butch romance as a baby dyke. they grow up so fast! .

“I researched different statistics online. I thought “okay, as a queer person of colour whose family disowned them and ended up homeless, I had this much of a percentage of a chance of surviving until age 25.” Statistics usually say that something is statistically insignificant when the data set is not large enough to accurately represent the population being studied. This means, that as a queer person of colour with my history, I am almost always a part of the stats that are deemed to be insignificant. These are the odds that people refuse to quantify because quantifying peoples’ success, especially if they don’t think you’re going to make it, is to them, not worth the effort. Me getting into law school was ‘insignificant’ statistically, but whether or not I would kill myself or commit acts of violence, those things are considered to be statistically significant – there’s a ton of research on these things.” - @jsandmeyer - Issue 6, The Mental Health Edition. .

Issue 4 Flashbacks - “When asked to write about love and sex for this issue of BINADW, I was immediately nervous. Although I think about the concepts of love and sex on a daily basis, vulnerability being so intrinsically connected to these ideas makes it difficult to write and talk about. As a butch woman, love and sex are often defined by others for me. They make assumptions based off my embodiment of a subversive masculinity. I now have the privilege to use this platform to share just one butch dyke’s perspective of love and sex, contributing to a larger narrative of those butches who have also felt the sting of assumptions. In every queer identity, there is always so much to unravel and learn about one another. I learn more about love everyday. I notice its absence, I flourish in it’s fullness. I have learned that picking apart love, investigating its inconsistencies, admiring its sound–even when it skips–has proven to be an act of love onto myself. One of the ways I explore love is to challenge myself to embrace love beyond intimate and romantic settings. I challenge myself to embrace a transformative love that extends to other dykes and butches in my community.” - @carlyriot by @esthergoodboy .

“I love teaching mathematics because of the relationships that I am able to build with students each year. When students come to my class, I want them to feel capable, noticed, respected, cared about. I know that lots of students have math phobia, so one of my main goals is to change their self-perception and attitude towards learning math. One thing I have noticed is that change starts on the personal level. It is not only about teaching math; it is also about helping young women develop as individuals who are able to articulate their thoughts and ideas. And especially teaching at an all-girls school with a predominately Black and Latinx student body, it is important that they have someone in their lives that is not afraid to be themselves. I am grateful to be one of those people for them.” - Nina Granberry, Issue 5 - The Work Edition. Ya can get your paws on a copy via the link in bio. @young_teach .

“Before I moved to Portland, I didn’t know how to take care of my mental health. I’d only been to a therapist once when I was 20 after my best friend had passed away. My mom is an immigrant from Thailand, and my dad’s from the baby-boomer generation. Culturally and generationally, going to a doctor to help you with your “mental problems” was seen as kind of a joke in my family. Whilst taking care of my mental health is new, it has become one of the most important things in my life. Sometimes I have reservations, I have this uncomfortable idea that people can use their “mental health issues” as a crutch. I never want to do that, I never want to use it as an excuse to not hold myself accountable.” - @lmheinsdale - Issue 6, The Mental Health Edition .

@esthergoodboy .
A tale as old as time itself. As a secondary school teacher, and 28 year old woman, I was once bullied by two 15 year old boys on the way home because they thought I was a peer . When’s the last time you compromised your authenticity in order to keep safe or navigate the workplace more smoothly ? Issue 5, our work & professions issue is all about this. “Throughout my whole youth I used to admire butch identities in silence because I had heard so many bad comments about them.
