“I’ve known that I love girls since I was six, maybe even younger. I wrote poetry for a blonde, curly haired girl who reminded me of the princesses in the Irish fairy tales that my mother would read to me before bed. She crumpled up the paper and threw it in the trash before going to collect her snack. The longer I knew of and denied my own lesbianism, the more it came out in my art. I wrote a high fantasy short fiction collection throughout my entire high school career and drew pictures to go along with the story. I never showed anyone my work, especially my mother. Rachel Levine (she/her), Pennsylvania’s secretary of health, is nominated by President-Elect Joe Biden (he/him) to be the assistant secretary of health. This will make Levine the “first openly transgender federal official to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.” In 2020, Levine has been handling the coronavirus in her home state of Pennsylvania. Although she has experienced transphobia in previous years, this last year has seen an increase in transphobia as her enforcement of masks and lockdowns angered individuals.
