Any kind folks who follow me on instagram (@heydarlahey) have already seen this, but I’m trying to make up for neglecting tumblr for so long. She’s sad now, but once she realizes there’s an itty bitty dragon on her head her day will get much better!

This was a small test run of Golden’s interference green acrylic paint. I’ve resolved to work it into every painting I possibly can.

A painting done for the dog-themed charity show at the Cartoon Network Studios gallery earlier this year

A Good Boy in Shining Armor

I’m thrilled to have this painting included in the Wonderpets Art Show, a show celebrating the times our pets feel like superheroes. The show opens tonight at Leanna Lin’s Wonderland in LA’s Eagle Rock neighborhood, with an opening event from 6-9pm. A portion of the proceeds will also be donated to Home Dog LA.

Be there!!

This wistful Carolina Wren is one of the first pieces I did for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology back in 2016, and still one of my favorites I did while I was there. It was turned into notecards for folks who donated to the Lab, and later into a puzzle!

Many years later, it is finally available in card form again, and as a print for the very first time. I hope y'all enjoy! :)

Painting workshop & artist inspiration —

In this workshop we were taught how to create our own canvas, which is of course extremely beneficial for many reasons: can be made in an eco-friendly way, better quality overall, can be cut to the exact size desired, and in some cases it can end up being less expensive (especially when working with a bigger scale). Although I am not amazing at DIY, I still enjoyed the making process and seeing it all come together.

Although my finished canvas is not yet painted on, the premise reminds me of other painters I am inspired by. I have always been a huge fan of Jimena Reno’s work — for both her artwork and work ethic. She is a successful freelance artist, and her overall style & layering of paint is very inspiring to me. This influence will probably later be incorporated into my work through what I choose to paint.
