New Arrivals: First Edition of Expedicion y Desembarco del “Granma” [title from cover: “Album Expedicionarios Granma”] (ca.1959).
Memorial souvenir documenting the 81 original insurgents who took part in the voyage from Tuxpan, Mexico, to the east coast of Cuba in November, 1956 – the official launching of the Cuban Revolution. Includes a photographic portrait of each of the participants, including very youthful portraits of Fidel and Raul Castro, Ernesto “Che” Guevarra, Camilo Cienfuegos, and others. Publication date uncertain, but certainly after October, 1959, as Camilo Cienfuegos is listed among the “martyrs” of the revolution. Fidel Castro is credited on title page for “leadership and direction” of the publication.

My time in La Habana was life changing. I have never been so moved by a country like this before. The people are generous even though they have nothing to give. The architecture is amazing and the city pulsates with history. I highly recommend that everyone puts this trip on their list. “I had an amazing experience in Habana, greatly due to the local experience I received from the Afro-Cuba tour. AfroLatino Travel connected me with a local, who was there to answer any questions, help me navigate the city, help haggle to get the best prices for taxis, and find the best cheap, local food spots. He was awesome throughout the trip.
I felt like less like a tourist and more like a local on this trip. I saw a great balance of the touristy Habana and the “real” Habana. I saw how people actually live and would have regretted it had I not seen this, and not gotten a genuine experience.
I think the biggest highlight for me was seeing a Tambor, which is an Afro-Cuban religious ritual. It gives me great pride to see folks of all shades celebrating their African religion and seeing that they have maintained several African traditions.”

A few highlights from Afrolatino Travel’s Tambor-Rumba Community Day we had on December 30th. We are having another one on Thursday, March 17th, 2016 and Friday, May 27, 2016. We also take participants to Matanzas to learn about the history and contemporary manifestations of Ñañiguismo aka Abakua, an AfroCuban male “secret” society.
Our local guide is a practitioner of Yoruba and Abakua as well as a “son of Añá,” what Yoruba religion drummers are sworn as. We had an amazing fellowship! Another interesting thing I found this trip to Cuba. A really big metal head. It is along the Malecon in Havana. Unless you get lucky or have eyes in the back of your head you’ll miss it. There are just way to many things to ckeck out.
