REPOST @fiyawata /// “soooo my insomnia post early this morning got folks engaged…and in my DMs. “Identity politics” is “my thing.” Especially as it pertains to people of African descent surviving White supremacy (or not). So let’s talk… Me myself - I am a first-generation American-born Ghanaian who was raised in New Orleans. In many cases, I identify as African, but in MOST cases, I identify as Black. “black” is a color in the crayon box. “Black” is a political identity. (If you are referring to human beings, capitalize the B. Thank you. When the rules of the English language were created, Black people weren’t considered human beings. So there’s that). Capital B. “Black” is a political identity that denotes people of African descent ALL OVER THE WORLD. For ME, it reflects a Diaporic perspective and connection. For ME, it aligns me with MY PEOPLE across time and space. “Black” is the larger umbrella under which the identities “African American,,” “African,” “Afro-Latinx,” “West Indian/Caribbean,” etc. find a home. I know that to the unsuspecting eye, we all look alike , but we’re not all African American. I am not African American, I am Black. There’s a difference.
That said - how do you identify? And why? Is it something that you’ve thought about and made a conscious, informed decision about? Or is it something you’ve adopted / acceptance outside of yourself?” #50shadesofblack #blackisbeautiful #Black #afrolatinx #african #ghana #carribbean

Meet Ryan, one of the AfroLatino Travel team members based in Rincon, Puerto Rico. A Mayaguez native, Ryan has always felt like the ‘Black Sheep” of the family and that experience was central in his identity as an Afrodescendant. He has whipped up some incredible Afro trips for 2016 in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

“My interests revolve around Afrodescendant communities in the Americas with a particular focus on Caribbean migrations and the interface between the environment and coastal populations. The work I am involved in is a direct result of my own family history and the multiple sites of departure and arrival across the Caribbean that is our story. As a Caribbean Black man born and raised in Puerto Rico, with roots in Cuba, Dominican Republic, Nevis, South Carolina and Philadelphia and family networks across the Americas I delve into this work to continue to empower the communities I belong to.”

#SashaMerci doesn’t want much, just to reign supreme in the world of entertainment. Luminaries like #QuincyJonesand#ShondaRhimes being her inspiration. Citing comedy as “the love of my life,” she grew up Dominican in the Bronx where she witnessed being blunt, funny, and having the gift of roasting folks as just a way of life. But the #AfroLatinx sketch writer, director, and actor is also candid about the less-humorous side of life. Encouraging real dialogues about depression and mental health.

“Questions to Stop Asking Latinx People” with Francia Raisa

Racism and microaggressions? Not cute. Francia Raisa handling it? V cute.

Miss Amara La Negra literally went and made her damn name the proud embodiment of her Black skin, in a society that often overlooks the vibrant Afro-Latinx history that has originated culture from the jump. That’s how you do it.
