Matthew Alderman Studios recently completed a commission for a new logo for the Dominicana online journal.  You can read more about the website’s Easter re-launch here, or like it on Facebook here. The website explains its symbolism further thus:

To mark this new chapter, we commissioned Matthew Alderman to draw our new logo, which depicts a familiar image from Dominican history: the dog with a flaming torch in his mouth. The dog is associated with St. Dominic and his Order, and the torch represents his burning zeal for preaching. The link dates back to a dream by our founder’s mother, Blessed Jane of Aza, while she was expecting him, and has been strengthened over the years by a pun on our Latin name:Domini-canes: the hounds of the Lord. Dominicana’s hound holds in his paws the shield of our province.

I haven’t done something like this before … at least not in watercolor.  I have drawn things like this for the coloring book I did a couple years ago but I digress! This was a piece I did for a couple friends of mine who are getting married, they are both Hufflepuffs You can’t really tell in the scan but the veils are iridescent and the rings are gold–yay for shiny!  This piece is pretty big and I am happy with how it turned out.

Linen purse with heraldic designs, ca. 1540.

From the Victoria & Albert Museum.

According to the V&A: “This formal, heraldic purse associated with marriage has more significance than a purse used simply for money, or a ‘swete-bag’ used for carrying perfumed herbs to sweeten the atmosphere. Both men and women carried or wore pouches or purses. The long strings of this example suggest that it was intended to hang from the waist, but it is uncertain whether it was ever actually used as a container. English purses of this date are extremely rare and the survival of this one may be due to its formal role, which meant that it was rarely used and thought worth looking after.”

Royal Arms ID (1714-1837)

Full - Main - Main Feature

When attempting to date a British military swords, there are a number of resources we can look at, depending on what is present. Fortunately from the late 18th Century onwards it became increasingly common for officers to adorn their blades with the Royal Cypher (GR for King George III and VR for Queen Victoria etc) and a Coat of Arms.

The above graphic illustrates how the Royal Coat of Arms changed between 1714 and 1837.

However, it is important to remember that these changes did not occur immediately. Communication was slower so information took longer to spread, templates were valuable so remained in use until worn out and only then were updated. So these dates should be seen as an indication rather than a hard point in time.
