I. Why Art Theft Is A Problem
In the many years that I have been on tumblr, I have seen countless artists stop creating, stop posting, delete their works, and completely fall off the face of the earth. All of them cite a common nuisance: having their art stolen/reposted/used without their permission.
Obviously, it sucks for their fans (like you and me). But more so, it sucks for them! All of their hours of effort stolen from them in seconds. Imagine working on a project for hours only to have someone else take it, post it, and get all the attention for it. Everyone can agree: that would be awful. So, let’s stop this problem!
More severely, such illegal use can lead to lawsuits. Artists are always the sole owners of their work. When someone uses their property in a way they do not consent to, this is theft - plain and simple- and can lead to legal ramifications, courtroom headache, and tons more ugly stuff.
Everyone, especially if you are considering reposting art, Please read this excellent post on this topic!!!
II. How To Spot Art Theft
Even if you are not reposting art yourself, you can still help the cause by taking a moment to think critically before supporting/liking/reblogging!
If you go through this list of tips and the art looks stolen, do not interact with the post. This small action will help discourage blogs from reposting!
1.) Red Flags.
Note: these may be in the post’s caption or its tags!
- “credit to the artist”
- “artist: ?”
- “artist unknown”
- “source: pinterest”
- Something that indicates a third-person viewership. (i.e. “omg he looks so good here!!”)
2.) Green Flags.
- Something that indicates first-person creation (i.e. “this took me 3 hours” or “my contribution to the fanzine!”)
- #mine / #my art / #my sketches / #my doodles
- A signature on the work that matches the blog’s name
- Commissioned work
3.) Check out the blog.
- It is pretty easy to tell if they are the Original Poster or not.
- Look for something that states they are an artist.
- Scroll down their blog and see if they have posted artwork of similar styles.
- Be suspicious of many styles that are drastically different. This may mean this not one artist’s blog, but is actually a blog that is reposting from many different artists.
4.) Beware post-production editing to the art.
- An overlay of a fanfic title
- Cropped into a header for a post
- Placed next to other artworks of different styles
- Blurred/Cropped signature
5.) Reverse Image Search.
- https://images.google.com/ is an excellent tool! (Desktop only)
- See if you can find the original artist on other sites (i.e. pixiv, twitter, facebook, tumblr, deviantart).
- Search their bios and see if they allow reposts. If not, the artwork is likely to be stolen.
- Many of the artists may not speak your same language. Use a translating tool to see their rules.
III. What To Do When You See Art Theft
1.) Message the blog that is doing the reposting.
This is the fastest and most direct method. It can be intimidating, but just remember and that you are doing the right thing!
2.) Approach them respectfully. Keep your cool.
No one will respond well to an angry message. Lay off on the all-caps, the swear words, the threats, the name-blasting. Here are some healthier alternatives to that:
- “Hi! Nice to meet you. I saw you reposted this art…
- did you get permission from the artist?
- that artist does not allow reposts.
- please delete the post and all other reposts that do not have permission on your blog.”
3.) If they do not believe that what they are doing is wrong, patiently explain why.
For a shortcut, direct them to this post!
4.) If they say that they have obtained permission, ask for proof of it.
Unfortunately, many blogs have started lying about having obtained permission. Here is an example I found today: “artist: 木の子 (pixiv)” but when you find the artist’s pixiv, you will see that they are totally against reposts.
5.) If they are still not cooperating, tell them that you will reach out to the artist directly. If this does not convince them, then actually reach out.
6.) Tell others not to support/like/reblog their reposts.
7.) When you see blogs reblogging reposted art, reach out to those blogs and tell them that the art was stolen.

V. TLDR
- REPOSTING/EDITING/USING ART WITHOUT PERMISSION IS THEFT.
- Reach out to artists before doing anything with their works.
- Always think critically before supporting/liking/reblogging artwork. If it looks stolen, do not interact with it.
- When someone tells you that you have reposted art without permission (which you shouldn’t have done in the first place), delete it is quickly as possible. Do not argue. You are in the wrong.
- Be brave in the fight against art theft!
Art theft is a serious, common, but solvable issue! Taking these steps is the least bit of thanks towards artists who do so much for us <3
Snowdrops and Dahlias
“Are you hurt?” The girl asked, most likely looking for some reason that Jamie should be acting like she was.
“No.” Jamie shook her head. “No, I’m fine. You’re fine. I’m just- I’m gonna,” She nodded toward the store and then turned around and pushed her cart forward.
She had never been one to forget how to speak in front of anyone, but damn, she had come here looking for sunshine and warmth and spring, that that girl was a ball of sunshine and springtime. And Jamie had just mumbled under her breath and stumbled away like she was a prepubescent boy who had never seen a girl before.
She looked back over her shoulder, absolutely mortified to find the other girl was looking at her.
She felt her entire face warm and then she looked back in front of her and tried to focus on the flowers.
She took a large drink of her coffee and then shook her head.
She was here for plants.

Alex gulped slightly quickly accessing the cell, at least there were no enemies in here that didn’t mean it was safe, just meant no one would actively try to kill them… yet… Alex fixed the hat on , their fathers hat. The unique stitching and bright red feather would instantly let the other pirates know EXACTLY who Alex was.

Bookbinding Fanfiction: A New Adventure Begins
and thus I rise from the dead (with no new fics of my own making though). Anyway, I’m gonna talk a bit about my process binding Salvageby@muffinlance. Thanks @necrotic-bones for (unknowingly) inspiring me to get into this (they were to first to ask to fanbind Salvage and I wanted to do it as well)
Before I begin, here are the guides/tutorials that I used:
-How To Make A Book From An AO3 Pageby@armoredsuperheavy
-Bookbinding Resources Master List by members of the Renegade Bindery discord server (found through the previous guide)
- r/bookbinding has a nice beginner’s introduction to bookbinding
- the Case Bound Book series by DAS Bookbinding on youtube is very helpful as well, I specifically used Part 6 Casing In
I also found this amazing program, called Bookbinder (on quantumelephant.co.uk), that takes your pdf and formats it into proper signatures and flips every second page for you etc, so that you can print it at home (if you have the proper printer for it)
this post is probably going to be kind of long, so the entire thing is under the cut, but here’s a preview:
Anyway, I think it’s been close to over two weeks since the start of my bookbinding projects, but they’re both done! I first did a kind of test run with a collection of detroit become human fanfics, which taught me four things:
Michelle Yeoh for GQ

If you are at all interested in conspiracy theories or the history of conspiracy theories, listen to the Knowledge Fight series “Formulaic Objections”
It is nothing but court recordings of Alex Jones’s deposition hearings, in which he gets meticulously torn apart by a team of skilled lawyers, followed by detailed analysis from a podcast that has been following his career for several years.
It is delicious. I am obsessed.
Bankston: Okay. Thank you, Mr. Jones. Mr. Jones, I’ve noticed on a lot of these answers you’ve said, “Well, I’m just going off what Mr. [Wolfgang] Halbig said.” So what I want to know is: When you talked earlier about how you did deep research, what was that? What deep research did you do?
Jones: Well, I mean, I did look at the news articles saying they were being very secretive about the case, that a lot of things were sealed, which is unusual. There were lawsuits involved with that, and I did do research on [Michael] Bloomberg putting out an e-mail the day before saying, “Get ready. There’s going to be a big event,” you know, just straight up, people waiting around for mass shootings or whatever. And just the way the media made a spectacle out of it right away is what really made me question. That scene like with the WMDs or babies in the incubators, I just saw the media so on it, so ready; and I thought that added credibility to it.
Bankston: Okay. I mean, I’m glad you brought up the Bloomberg thing. I remember there was a couple of episodes where you talked about this Bloomberg e-mail and you said to your audience that there was an e-mail that came out in the lawsuit where Bloomberg told his people: Get ready in the next 24 hours to capitalize on a mass shooting. That didn’t happen; that’s not a real e-mail, is it?
Barnes: Objection as to form.
Jones: I mean, I don’t think it’s exactly that; but there’s one similar to that.
Bankston:Yeah. I mean, what you said is not real.
no thoughts, only andreil & bubble baths
I am always a bit baffled that there are such strong reactions against Jiang Cheng allegedly torturing and killing a bunch of demonic cultivators in a story where the actual protagonist does in fact very explicitly and unambiguously torture a bunch of people to death in truly creative and horrifying ways, which includes not only forcing a guy to eat his own legs but also feeding his fingers to an undead baby. I mean, to each their own obviously, but like, this is where we’re going to draw the proverbial line in the sand?
