NEW MAP: Europe 310: Maximian’s Last Stand (July 310) https://buff.ly/2TMJFoo Maximinus Daza refused to accept the rulings at Carnuntum and demanded to be made an Augustus. Reluctantly, Galerius backed down, initially acknowledging Maximinus and Constantine as ‘Sons of Augusti’ then, after Maximinus threatened to rebel, recognizing them both as full Augusti in 310. That year Constantine faced his own problems when his father-in-law Maximian emerged from retirement in Viennensis and proclaimed himself emperor again. However, Maximian found little support and was forced to kill himself when Constantine’s army arrived. #4thcentury #ancientrome #constantine #constantinethegreat #constantinei #maximian #easternromanempire #europeanhistory #gaul #historian #historias #historic #historicalmap #historisch #historybuff #historydegree #historylover #historylovers #historyschool #instahistory #maps #roman #romancivilwar #romancivilwars #romanempire #romanhistory #romanitaly #romans #westernromanempire #worldhistory (at Arles, France)

NEW MAP: Europe 1813: Armistice of Pläswitz (4 June 1813) https://buff.ly/3y5l1hm In the spring of 1813 Napoleon counterattacked the advancing Russo-Prussian forces in Saxony, defeating them at Lützen and Bautzen before advancing into Silesia. However, French losses in this campaign were almost as great as those of the Allies, and in early June Napoleon and his opponents agreed to an armistice at Pläswitz. #1810s #1813 #19thcentury #arthistory #austria #axisallies #cartographic #europe #europeanhistory #france #geopolitics #historian #historical #historicalatlas #historicalmap #historisch #history #historylesson #historylovers #june #june4 #maps #napoleon #napoleonicwars #frenchhistory #oldmaps #prussia #russia #saxony #newmap (at Bautzen)

NEW MAP: Europe 297: Second Battle of Carrhae (spring 297) https://buff.ly/3ixbf2X In late 296 war broke out between Sasanian Persia and the Roman Empire. Distracted by a revolt in Egypt in early 297, Diocletian sent Galerius with a reduced force to confront the Persians. Galerius met Shah Narseh in battle between Carrhae and Callinicum, but was heavily defeated. #thirdcentury #ancientrome #diocletian #galerius #easternromanempire #europe #europeanhistory #gaul #historias #historicalmap #historicalplace #histories #history #historyclass #historylesson #historymajor #historyschool #sasanianempire #sasanid #maps #mesopotamia #roman #romanbritain #romancivilwar #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #teachinghistory #ancientarmenia #newmap (at Carrhae)

NEW MAP: Europe 293: First Tetrarchy (1 March 293) https://buff.ly/34rIKv6 By 293 Carausius still held out in Britain and Diocletian had become convinced that a new system was needed to secure both the Roman Empire and the succession. In March he presided over the appointment of two Caesars (subordinates and heirs)—Galerius to serve with him in the East and Constantius to join Maximian in the West. This rule of four men—two Augusti (emperors) and two Caesars—later became known as the Tetrarchy. #thirdcentury #ancientrome #tetrarchy #diocletian #easternromanempire #europe #europeanhistory #gaul #goths #historical #historicalmap #historicalmaps #historicalplace #historie #history #historylover #ancientpersia #mapping #maps #roman #romancivilwar #romancivilwars #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #constantius #romanemperor #welovemaps #worldatlas #newmap (at Mediolanum)

NEW MAP: Europe 275: Assassination of Aurelian (September 275) https://buff.ly/3rq8iBQ Aurelian’s victory in Gaul restored unity to the Roman Empire, a feat the Senate acknowledged by granting him the title Restitutor Orbis (“Restorer of the World”). The emperor then set his sights on Persia only to be assassinated by some of his staff in September 275. His sudden death shocked the army, who turned to the Senate to select a new emperor. Over the ensuing 2–3 months of consultation, there was an interregnum, during which Aurelian’s widow Ulpia Severina seems to have continued to preside as empress. #thirdcentury #alemanni #ancientrome #aurelian #cartografia #europe #europeanhistory #romanemperor #historia #historicalmap #historie #histories #historygeek #historymajor #historymuseum #persianempire #map #mapping #maps #militaryhistory #roman #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #semnones #september #spqr #thrace #caesar #newmap (at Caenophrurium)
