NEW MAP: Europe 313: Battle of Tzirallum (30 April 313) https://buff.ly/2Wg5UUN Constantine’s capture of Rome established his preeminence among the three Augusti. Realizing that Constantine and Licinius were colluding against him, Maximinus Daza crossed into Europe in the spring of 313 but was decisively defeated by Licinius at Tzirallum. Maximinus was the last Roman emperor to persecute Christians; following his downfall, Christianity began to emerge as the dominant religion in the empire. #4thcentury #ancientrome #april #april30 #constantine #cartographer #constantinei #easternromanempire #europe #europeanhistory #geopolitics #historicalplace #history #historydegree #historyfacts #historylover #historymajor #historyschool #maps #riskgame #roman #romancivilwar #romancivilwars #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #teachinghistory #westernromanempire #worldatlas #newmap (at Çorlu)

NEW MAP: Europe 307: Galerius vs Maxentius (fall 307) https://buff.ly/3iibFZa Galerius rejected Maxentius’ claim to power in Rome and sent Severus to crush him in early 307. However, Maxentius’ father Maximian returned in support of his son and the two defeated Severus. Maximian then traveled to Gaul to secure the friendship of Constantine. While he was doing this, Galerius invaded Italy himself, but had to withdraw when he realized he could not capture Rome. #thirdcentury #ancientrome #constantinethegreat #constantine #constantinei #maxentius #galerius #europe #europeanhistory #gaul #historie #historyfacts #historygeek #historylesson #historylovers #historymajor #historymaker #mapping #maps #roman #romanafrica #romancivilwar #romancivilwars #romanempire #romanhistory #romanitaly #romans #westernromanempire #worldatlas #newmap (at Rome, Italy)

NEW MAP: Europe 305: Second Tetrarchy (1 May 305) https://buff.ly/2SMcCAk In 305 Diocletian and Maximian both retired, setting a precedent in the hopes of stabilizing the office of Emperor and preventing further succession crises. Galerius and Constantius became the new Augusti and appointed Maximinus Daza and Valerius Severus as their Caesars. #4thcentury #constantine #diocletian #tetrarchy #ancientrome #easternromanempire #europe #europeanhistory #historias #historicalplace #historygram #historylover #historymajor #historymatters #historynerd #persianempire #sasanian #history #mapmaking #maps #may #may1 #ancienthistory #roman #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #welovehistory #westernromanempire #newmap (at Milan, Italy)

NEW MAP: Europe 302: Battle of Lingones (circa 302) https://buff.ly/35UsCDj Between 299 and 305 the Roman Empire went largely unthreatened by war, perhaps a testament to the general success of Diocletian’s reforms. One exception was in around 302, when an Alemannic raiding force almost captured Constantius at Lingones, deep within Gaul. However, Constantius soon defeated the invaders and drove them back across the Rhine, stabilizing that frontier as well. #thirdcentury #alemanni #ancientrome #germania #carta #constantine #europe #europeanhistory #gaul #historia #historie #histories #history #historydegree #historylover #historylovers #historymajor #ancientgaul #persianempire #mapmaking #maps #roman #romanemperor #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #ancientgermany #germanhistory #sarmatia #newmap (at Langres)

NEW MAP: Europe 298: Galerius’ invasion of Persia (late 298) https://buff.ly/3vBvi35 After his failure at Carrhae, Galerius gathered a stronger force and returned to face the Persians in Armenia. In 298 he surprised and decisively defeated Shah Narseh near Satala, capturing his wife, harem, treasury, and much of his court. Galerius then invaded Persia itself and captured the capital Ctesiphon. The following year, at the Peace of Nisibis, Narseh agreed to cede territory to the Romans and restore the Kingdom of Armenia. It would be another four decades before the two empires would fight again. #3rdcentury #ancientrome #ancientarmenia #easternromanempire #europe #europeanhistory #galerius #historia #historias #historicalatlas #historicalmaps #diocletian #histories #history #historyfacts #historyinthemaking #historylesson #historymajor #historymaker #ancientpersia #maps #roman #sasanian #sasanid #romanempire #romanhistory #tetrarchy #romans #worldhistory #newmap (at Satala)

NEW MAP: Europe 297: Second Battle of Carrhae (spring 297) https://buff.ly/3ixbf2X In late 296 war broke out between Sasanian Persia and the Roman Empire. Distracted by a revolt in Egypt in early 297, Diocletian sent Galerius with a reduced force to confront the Persians. Galerius met Shah Narseh in battle between Carrhae and Callinicum, but was heavily defeated. #thirdcentury #ancientrome #diocletian #galerius #easternromanempire #europe #europeanhistory #gaul #historias #historicalmap #historicalplace #histories #history #historyclass #historylesson #historymajor #historyschool #sasanianempire #sasanid #maps #mesopotamia #roman #romanbritain #romancivilwar #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #teachinghistory #ancientarmenia #newmap (at Carrhae)

North America 160 years ago today: Attack on Fort Sumter (12 April 1861) https://buff.ly/2P4fceF Despite the Confederacy’s declaration of independence, the United States Army still garrisoned a number of forts in the south. The most vulnerable was Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor, South Carolina, which desperately needed to be resupplied. However when newly elected US President Lincoln ordered the navy to ship in supplies, the Confederate government considered it an act of war and attacked the fort from land. The American Civil War had begun. #1861 #19thcentury #americancivilwar #americanhistory #april #april12 #confederacy #fortsumter #historicalmaps #histories #historyfacts #historygram #historymajor #historymatters #historyschool #mapping #maps #northamerica #southcarolina #militaryhistory #ushistory #uscivilwar #confederatestates #victorian #victorianera #abrahamlincoln #worldatlas #todayinhistory #historytoday #thisdayinhistory (at Fort Sumter Tours)

Asia Pacific 83 years ago today: Battle of Tai'erzhuang (7 April 1938) https://buff.ly/3rX3bcH Despite the outcry over the fall of Shanghai and the Rape of Nanking, the Western powers were not prepared to intervene against Japan. However there was some hope for the Chinese - in April their troops managed their first major victory, defeating the Japanese at Tai'erzhuang and temporarily preventing the connection of the two Japanese armies. #1930s #1938 #20thcentury #april #april7 #asiapacific #atlas #axisallies #cartografia #chinesecivilwar #chiangkaishek #chinesehistory #nazigermany #historyclass #historygeek #historymajor #historymaker #historymatters #historymuseum #empireofjapan #japanesehistory #mapa #maps #sinojapanesewar #japaneseempire #ww2 #wwii #todayinhistory #historytoday #thisdayinhistory (at Taierzhuang Battle Memorial Hall)

NEW MAP: Europe 276: Marcus Claudius Tacitus (early 276) https://buff.ly/3sFZ99Q In late 275 the Roman Senate ended the post-Aurelian interregnum by appointing the aged Marcus Claudius Tacitus as emperor. Tacitus soon faced serious challenges: that winter Germanic tribes invaded Gaul while the Heruli overran much of Asia Minor. He defeated the Heruli in 276, but died—probably assassinated—while returning west, after a reign of just six months. #thirdcentury #asiaminor #ancientrome #bithynia #cappadocia #carta #europe #europeanhistory #gothic #galatia #goths #historical #historicalmaps #histories #historybuff #historymajor #historymaker #historynerd #lowergermania #romanemperor #maps #militaryhistory #pontus #roman #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #spqr #uppergermania #newmap (at Ankara, Turkey)

NEW MAP: Europe 275: Assassination of Aurelian (September 275) https://buff.ly/3rq8iBQ Aurelian’s victory in Gaul restored unity to the Roman Empire, a feat the Senate acknowledged by granting him the title Restitutor Orbis (“Restorer of the World”). The emperor then set his sights on Persia only to be assassinated by some of his staff in September 275. His sudden death shocked the army, who turned to the Senate to select a new emperor. Over the ensuing 2–3 months of consultation, there was an interregnum, during which Aurelian’s widow Ulpia Severina seems to have continued to preside as empress. #thirdcentury #alemanni #ancientrome #aurelian #cartografia #europe #europeanhistory #romanemperor #historia #historicalmap #historie #histories #historygeek #historymajor #historymuseum #persianempire #map #mapping #maps #militaryhistory #roman #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #semnones #september #spqr #thrace #caesar #newmap (at Caenophrurium)
