Kwanzaa was first celebrated in 1966 after having been created by professor of Africana studies, activist, and author Maulana Karenga to help give identity, purpose, and direction to African Americans.

Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa (between December 26 and January 1) correspond to the Nguzo Saba (the Seven Principles):

  1. Umoja - Unity - To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
  2. Kujichagulia - Self-Determination - To define and name ourselves, as well as to create and speak for ourselves.
  3. Ujima - Collective Work and Responsibility - To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers’ and sisters’ problems our problems and to solve them together.
  4. Ujamaa - Cooperative economics - To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together.
  5. Nia - Purpose - To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
  6. Kuumba - Creativity - To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
  7. Imani - Faith - To believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

Happy Kwanzaa to those who celebrate it. While it does not receive the same visibility or acknowledgement as other end-of-year holidays, it is important to include those who observe these seven days!

We are in the midst of the holiday season! Thanks to the generosity of some talented artists, you can send love and support to someone who might need some extra joy this holiday season: bit.ly/TEP-ecard

By making a donation of $3 or more, you can pick your favorite design and send a personalized e-card to the person of your choosing! Not only will your gift ensure that your loved ones know you were thinking of them, it will help us continue to provide vital resources to trans people in crisis, particularly QTPOC.

All of the artwork featured was created and donated by trans artists, and we have given them a shoutout on our social media!

Being isolated from each other feels especially tough during the holidays. Send your loved ones an e-card so that they can feel your love and support from afar! Choose your e-card here: bit.ly/TEP-ecard

The holiday season can be uncomfortable for many queer and trans folks. But we do not have an obligation to continue familial and community traditions that are not good for us.

We can make new traditions. We can adapt old traditions to our needs and our evolving selves. We can come together and find joy amongst ourselves, in person or virtually.

Where do you find affirmation during the holidays, for any and all parts of yourself? What traditions (new or old) bring you joy? Share in the comments – share in each others’ joy.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who joined us over the past six days for community fun and connection in our event series “Peace, Love, & Trans Joy: A Virtual Home for the Holidays.”

Our goal for the events – from movie nights to BINGO to a holiday mixer – was to provide a space for those who were not with their loved ones this holiday season. To everyone who joined us for one or all of the events: THANK YOU. If you have feedback or ideas that you want to see from us – anything to make you feel more at home with your community – let us know!

Our holiday e-card fundraiser closes TOMORROW NIGHT! If you have not had a chance to look at the art donated by some wonderful trans artists, make sure you do so before 11:59pm EST tonight!

You can support our efforts through this e-card fundraiser through tonight here: bit.ly/TEP-ecard!

Thank you again to all the artists who donated their time and work to our organization, and to everyone who has sent a card to their loved ones through us. Happy holidays, and happy New Year!

Yesterday I was commissioned by a friend to help a four-year-old regain her Christmas spirit. She was very worried the virus would cause Christmas to be canceled. So, this elf assured her (via zoom) that at the North Pole things were as busy as ever.

I’m very pleased to report it worked.
