We are greatly saddened to learn of the death of Jaheim Pugh, a Black gender non-conforming 19-year-old, in Prichard, Alabama on December 13.

Jaheim is remembered by loved ones as “the life of the party,” “such a bright light,“ and “so loving.” We mourn the loss of such a young life, and will continue to work towards a world where no one has to fear violence or oppression for who they are or how they look.

Rest in peace and power, Jaheim.

Kwanzaa was first celebrated in 1966 after having been created by professor of Africana studies, activist, and author Maulana Karenga to help give identity, purpose, and direction to African Americans.

Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa (between December 26 and January 1) correspond to the Nguzo Saba (the Seven Principles):

  1. Umoja - Unity - To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
  2. Kujichagulia - Self-Determination - To define and name ourselves, as well as to create and speak for ourselves.
  3. Ujima - Collective Work and Responsibility - To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers’ and sisters’ problems our problems and to solve them together.
  4. Ujamaa - Cooperative economics - To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together.
  5. Nia - Purpose - To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
  6. Kuumba - Creativity - To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
  7. Imani - Faith - To believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

Happy Kwanzaa to those who celebrate it. While it does not receive the same visibility or acknowledgement as other end-of-year holidays, it is important to include those who observe these seven days!

Trans people of color face the compounded oppressions of white supremacy and cisnormativity, and often patriarchy as well. Because they live at the intersection of multiple systems of marginalization, QTPOC experience significantly increased harm in housing discrimination, unemployment, poverty, and state and individual violence.

We are dedicated to support trans people in crisis, with a major focus on Black, Indigenous, and people of color who are trans, non-binary, Two Spirit, or non-conforming. But we can’t do it alone.

By making a donation of $3 or more, you can pick your favorite design and send a personalized e-card to the person of your choosing! Just because we are in the holiday season does not mean that mental health crises, COVID-19 isolatio

Just because we are in the holiday season does not mean that mental health crises, COVID-19 isolation, and ongoing trauma are on pause. This is especially true for marginalized communities like ours.

Since 2014, Trans Lifeline has been connecting trans people to the community support and resources we need to survive and thrive. If you need support or help in a crisis, call the lifeline at (877) 565-8860. If you are in Canada, you can call (877) 330-6366.

Trans Lifeline is based on ten principles:

  1. Peer support (active listening, community knowledge, shared lived experience & trust to be there for our peers)
  2. Community, not cops (preempting crises by connecting trans people with each other; will not call emergency services or law enforcement without your explicit request)
  3. Harm reduction (reducing harm and not creating barriers to supporting our peers through their survival)
  4. Confidentiality & anonymity (callers’ identities are fully anonymous, and nothing said will ever be shared without a caller’s request)
  5. Structural not pathological (develop and recognize our own unique resilience and power by building community together)
  6. Informed consent (never bring in outside resources or engage a caller in any activity without their fully informed and consensual request)
  7. Dismantling white supremacy (centering the people in our communities who face the most barriers to economic justice)
  8. Financial redistribution (draw inspiration from the principles of mutual aid as we take responsibility for caring for one another and changing our conditions)
  9. Equity, not equality (address the failures of disparate levels of privilege and access caused by colonialism, white supremacy, ableism, and transmisogyny)
  10. Autonomy & self determination (right to self identify, have autonomy over our choices, and be in the drivers’ seat of your own future)

Trans lives matter. ALWAYS. Trans lives – especially our QTPOC siblings – matter unconditionally.

The vast majority of our donations go towards our direct aid programs for trans, non-binary, and non-conforming people in crisis. 57% of those who requested emergency assistance since the summer, totaling over 100 individuals, were BIPOC, and requests increased substantially each month. It’s clear that our work is far from over.

We are committed to lifting our community members up, but we can’t do it alone. Help us our trans siblings stay safe and healthy TODAY.

The concept of “mutual aid” has entered the popular imagination over the past few months

The concept of “mutual aid” has entered the popular imagination over the past few months, but it is not a new concept – and not one everyone understands.

Mutual aid is often characterized by the slogan “solidarity - not charity.” In short, it is the process of building and maintaining bottom-up structures of cooperation (for the people, by the people) to replace reliance on top-down solving of problems, such as the state or philanthropists. It is an inherently anti-capitalist politic by valuing cooperation over competition in all aspects of life.

Following mutual aid accounts on social media is not enough. We must actively and regularly participate in the process itself by serving or donating. Share and promote the needs of our communities, yes, but shares do not help pay for food or rent. We must do more.

Productivity is NOT more important than your wellbeing. Getting things done is NOT more important than your health, physical or mental.

Capitalism teaches us that we have to produce to have worth, to deserve life. WE DO NOT. Every person has intrinsic value, no matter how much, how often, how efficiently you produce something “valuable.”

Your wellbeing is more important than whatever nonsense capitalism tries to brainwash us with to benefit a few rich individuals who manipulate our communities. You matter more.

It’s #TransSpotlightSaturday today, and we are featuring Mayam Garris (they/them), a Black agender farmer helping run a queer & trans community farm in Albuquerque, New Mexico!

For Mayam, trans empowerment is “a way of self determination, inspiration, and liberation. We determine where we are and where we want to go. Envisioning our futures and the futures of our kin moving forward.”

You can follow their work on the farm and community garden on Instagram at utilityqueer!

Trans people exist all around us, in every sphere of life! We aren’t all well-known actors, artists, authors, poets, or drag performers. Some of us are farmers! Some of us bake as a hobby! Some of us are students, or don’t have a main hobby, or are still figuring out where we belong. There is no single correct way to be trans or to embody our transness – it all deserves to be acknowledged.

Are you a trans person who is doing something empowering, inspiring, or just plain cool? Do you know a trans person committed to trans joy? Nominate yourself or someone else here: bit.ly/TEPspotlight

Where do you find affirmation during the holidays, for any and all parts of yourself? What traditions (new or old) bring you joy? Share in the comments – share in each others’ joy.

The trans community is inherently linked with all other oppressed communities. We are interdependent; our oppression and therefore our liberation are inextricably connected.

They not only create digital art for themself and for commissions, but they also created art for a billboard promoting the importance of trans life.

Goodbye 2020. Hello 2021.

Here’s to a new year of growth in the right directions, in the directions of safety and love and community and hope, on the path to liberation. The problems of 2020 have not magically been resolved by the turn of the calendar, but we will keep moving forward.

Happy New Year’s Eve!!

It is an accomplishment to have made it through this year. We remember all those who will not be coming with us into 2021, and we look towards the new year for growth on the path to liberation.

Stay as safe as possible today, tonight, and in the days ahead – stay home if you have one, and avoid parties with large crowds that we would normally expect at this time of year. Celebrate online or safely with a small group of friends!

See you in the new year!

Thank you again to all the artists who donated their time and work to our organization, and to everyone who has sent a card to their loved ones through us. Happy holidays, and happy New Year!

As we close out the year, we are also coming to the end of our six days of community fun and connection! Tomorrow is Day Six of “Peace, Love, & Trans Joy: A Virtual Home for the Holidays,” and we are closing it out with a movie night and New Year’s Celebration!

Join us to watch a movie and discuss the highs and lows of 2020 and what is on the horizon for 2021, starting at 6pm EST. Register here: bit.ly/TEPnewyear

We want to give our community a space to come together safely and frequently for the holidays. Despite the hurt we have individually and collectively felt this year, we can be your home this season.
