The holiday season can be uncomfortable for many queer and trans folks. But we do not have an obligation to continue familial and community traditions that are not good for us.

We can make new traditions. We can adapt old traditions to our needs and our evolving selves. We can come together and find joy amongst ourselves, in person or virtually.

Where do you find affirmation during the holidays, for any and all parts of yourself? What traditions (new or old) bring you joy? Share in the comments – share in each others’ joy.

I’d like to add my great great aunt Flora!

Y'all wanna know why we don’t see or hear about trans people from that era?

That’s because that picture was taken at what is known in its native language as Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, it is the place where the first trans healthcare was developed, where the term transsexual was coined.

Do you want to know what happened to the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft?

It was the victim of the very first Nazi book burning. Their teachings were outlawed and their books destroyed. Their leaders - such as Magnus Hirschfeld - were criminalized and exiled, if not outright murdered.

The fascists exterminated not just a generation of trans people, but they erased our history from the books almost entirely. It took us almost a century to get back to where we are now.

We’ve always been here, but our future is not guaranteed. We have to fight for our survival, because it’s happening again.

During this Latine/x Heritage Month, we want to celebrate the diversity, beauty, and resilience of our Latine/x trans siblings

We see you in your boldness in these intersecting identities.

What does Latine/x Heritage Month mean to you?

livelaughawesomewrites:

As a social work student and person with a certificate in social work, I completely agree with your comments about the ineffectiveness of social workers right out of university into a new community. You’ve got to know your community to be a good social worker, and a lot of people just don’t realize that.

Even more so, they attach themselves to some idea that everything they need to know they learned at school. I think what horrifies me the most about social workers is that you don’t have to have training in anti-oppression or privilege or any of that. You can get by with one or two classes specifically addressing that. And more so, I find that in social work programs, queer folks are kind of held to this huge “YOU KNOW EVERYHTING ABOUT ALL QUEERS” idea, so few white, female-assigned, non-binary, middle class queers actually address the fact that they don’t know what the issues affecting all queer people are. /end rant

I really appreciate your story (as a white “FAAB” genderqueer) because it helps me reconsider how I can be an ally with trans women and not reconstruct transmisogynistic power imbalances when having them as clients. Thank you!

This is an important point. Back when PartyBottom was a teenager and nascent social work student, her second required class was called something like, “Working With Diverse Populations” or whatnot, like, an introduction to cultural competency, which, while taught in some seriously questionable ways, at least introduced a class of mostly-white state school doofy 19-year olds to concepts like, “sooo, reverse racism does not exist,” which, I have to say, was a BRAIN ESPLODE moment for about half the class.

(However, I still use skills and knowledge I attained in that class, especially the unit on gerontology, which has been both helpful in my volunteer work at SAGE – an org called Services and Advocacy for Gay Elders, here in New York – as well as being a good friend/family member to people who are dealing with the difficulties that come with having an aging family member who is having trouble: hoarding, sundowning, dementia, anxiety about routine and attachment to sense of place, etc.)

I currently have a friend who is in an NYU MSW program and she on the regular hears the shittiest things come out of people’s mouths, but that is perhaps not not tied to the fact that NYU is an incredibly expensive private school and most of the students there are hoping to hop on to a pipeline that will eventually lead to very lucrative private practice dealing with yuppie neurosis.

Also I would like to agree with and echo your comments about tokenization and its more sinister ill effects: when you are called on to be the spokesperson for “the community,” it is important to realize that you are a select representative of many communities, many of which share only the loosest of ties. Say, even if we’re talking about “the trans community in New York,” this is a misnomer, as there are dozens of trans communities in New York, broken down by age, income, education, specific gender affinity, location/borough – and, perhaps most importantly, language and race. It bugs PartyBottom when people try to individually speak for all these constituencies, and it is something I hope to be wary of as I continue this blog.

Thanks for writing! xoxo PB

InQueery: What Does the Word “Transgender” Mean?

Welcome back to our new web series InQueery, where we delve into the his — er, themstory — of our favorite queer words. In this episode, Angelica Ross, who plays Candy on Pose and is the founder of TransTech Social Enterprises, examines the origins of the term “transgender.”

Ms. Ross breaks down how “transgender” became an umbrella term, and also explores the evolution of the words “transsexual” and “transvestite.” To learn how “transgender” became “trans,” and to learn the difference between all of the above terms, check out the full video.

“kids are detransitioning”

no. actually, children now feel comfortable and accepted enough to experiment with their gender, pronouns, name, and presentation. and while some of them end up realizing they were cis the entire time, they now have a new understanding and appreciation for one of the most marginalized and abused groups of people in the world.

there, I fixed your shitty headline.

Also quite honestly, if kids are detransitioning- so what? Honestly, good for them.

Nobody is doing surgery on trans kids. Nobody is doing anything more than MAYBE puberty blockers (which are clinically proven to be safe and are also the go to treatment for cis kids going through precocious puberty). If they decide that actually they’re not the gender they thought they were, GOOD.

I want kids to feel safe trying things out. I want kids to experiment with their self expression, be it clothes or hair or gender. If it turns out to be “just a phase” I would far rather it be a phase that they are loved and supported through rather than something they feel is shameful and that they have to hide. I want them to feel like there’s no pressure to go one way or the other, just to feel safe to figure themselves out in whatever way makes them comfortable.

Protect trans kids. Protect detrans kids. Protect questioning kids. Full fucking stop.

Investing in something that turned out to be not what you wanted, but nonetheless left you with insight into who you want to be? That’s being alive for ya

I hope I don’t sound insensitive, but I lack the knowledge and want to learn more to better understand the trans community: is there any health concerns with detransitioning (mainly focusing on hormonal growth) in children?

I myself am cis but want to understand and learn more about how transitioning and in this regard, detransitioning work. Many articles I was looking at only talked about the percentage of people that detransitioning (or retransitioning) so if you have any articles/blogs that discuss more about it I would be happy to learn.

white trans mascs specifically those around my age (15-19) need to understand that their experience of being trans isn’t universal. my gender isn’t ‘feral little gremlin who never washes’ bc as a black person i am already seen as dirtier than my white counterparts. i also have no interest in being seen as feral bc once again, as a black person, i am dehumanised against my will. i’m not the first transmasc of colour to discuss this either.

this is why so much of the trans activism is just really freaking white washed, because everything “considered” liberating for white trans folks is often usually just un-liberating for black people and I think when we try to speak up on this we often get a ton of shit for it

People of Pride #4: Marsha “Pay it No Mind” Johnson

Marsha P. Johnson was an African-American transgender woman, passionate LGBTQ rights activist, drag queen, and loud voice for low-income gender non-conforming & trans people of color. She was celebrating her 25th birthday at the Stonewall Inn during the early morning hours of June 28th, 1969. When the police began arresting and harassing gay patrons at the club that night, Marsha was among the first to resist the police. Check out the links below for more information about her story, her activism, and the Stonewall Riots:

Every day in June, I will be posting an illustration that highlights an LGBT+ activist who I believe everyone should know. This series will be in no way comprehensive, & will include a multitude of identities, races, sexualities, and genders.

Baby Trans, listen to me, a 34 year old.

Hi, I’m Trans. I was AFAB and I transitioned, now I just look like a short cis guy.

Here’s the thing: I didn’t transition until I was about 27ish. I didn’t even know I was trans until I was 25.

Don’t let anyone tell you to “not bother transitioning after 19”

That’s a load of shit. People barely know who they are at 19. Personalities change and develop. Shit I didn’t really know who I was until I was about 27-28ish.

You can transition at any age. If you don’t feel ready in your teens, or your 20s, take your time. If you are unable to transition at 19 due to medical or economical reasons, you have plenty of time. The clock is not ticking. Take this at your own pace.

You’ve got a whole long life ahead of you, take one step at a time.
