I’ve been thinking about adding some historical illustrations to my portfolio, so I used the unfortunate Bockstenmannen as a test subject. He’s currently residing in the Halland Museum of Cultural History in Varberg, Sweden, where they’ve had a lovely reconstruction done of how he may have looked in life. I based the colors of his clothing off the information on their website, as the preserved garments have been turned yellow-brown by the bog.

Some of what I’ve been working on for my Master’s thesis. There’s still a ways to go on this exhibit, so no pictures of it in action (yet!), but here’s some samples from the preliminary design package that’s going to be presented at my thesis defense, and to the client.

After June, I’ll have more time to work on science art, and I’ve got some exciting stuff in the works, so stay tuned!

A few days shy of le 14 juillet and I’ve finally finished my painting of Joan of Arc, in a style inspired by the great 20th century illustrator N.C. Wyeth. This is the first finished painting I’ve done in Clip Studio Paint, and it’s been a delightful program to work in.

sketchbook pages fall 2016-spring 2017, part 2: animal studies (selections). All from web references with the exception of the alligators, which are from my own photographs.

My technique for practicing animals in general, rather than over-focussing on one species: pick an animal and do an entire page of studies of that one species, then move on to a different one next time. Switch classes and families regularly; don’t get too used to just equines, or just songbirds. Don’t worry about skeletal/muscular anatomy or perfect proportions just yet- save that for when you do prep for a more formal illustration. Just try to capture quick studies of living, moving, animals.

From hourly comic day yesterday, 2.1.22…yes, I did lay them out backwards on the scanner so they read right to left; they’re also written in a variety of tenses so the brain has really been kind of MIA lately ‍♀️

I have nothing to offer except poisonous plants: Elleboro, Belladonna, Aconito

You grow in the dark / I rot

For a contest; ink, graphite, and optimism ✨

She was a handsome woman, always had been. An assured woman who always fixed you with her gaze, commandeered you to be drawn in just like her husband, but demanded respect rather than obedience. Which isn’t to say she was a particularly good person, only than she went about not being so much better than her husband’s shallow niceness.

She barely lifted her head in acknowledgement of my entry, though she greeted me as one of her own, which I had always rather liked about her. In fact I liked Michelle Hallows a great deal. Judge me if you must.

There was something gorgeous about him’ by @thyra279

I was so fascinated by the beautiful writing style, and I couldn’t pass the opportunity to draw some 20’s fashion.

Will I ever be over ‘Judith and her maid’ by Artemisia Lomi Gentileschi? Unlikely.
