Breakfast on Pluto

Roigghttttt. So obviously the film industry has a problem with casting cis actors to play trans characters. That’s bad, of course. That being said…….. i fucking loved this movie. I was surprised cause I’ve somehow never heard of it before (I have heard of aLOT of lgbt movies) and I dug kinda deep to find it (I scrolled down Cillian Murphy’s actor credits on letterboxd lol) so I assumed it would be average at best. WRONG. It begins in 70’s Ireland and follows Kitten, an openly trans woman as she goes to London to look for her mum who left her on a priests doorstep as a baby. The plot is set out over what I think is a long(ish) period of time, it’s never made clear. Basically it’s less of a deep look into one time in her life and more of a quick look at lots of times. I think that’s why I was so interested the whole time cause you can’t really get bored. The film also doesnt take itself too seriously, its not a super deep, sad, society-is-evil type of thing. I’m saying this cause I was thrown of when it opened and two birds started having a conversation (sub not dub ofc). If you like Cillian Murphy definitely watch and if you don’t then still watch. Also it has a happy ending!! Sad stuff happens but not so sad I cried so take that as you will. 9/10

Big Eden

This was reccommended to me! Very very cute, feel good movie. The premise is very hallmark (big city guy has to go back to his small hometown and falls in love) but the execution is a lot better than a hallmark movie. It’s definitely a comfort type movie so if you want some gay happiness this is the movie for you. I am OBSESSED with how this small town is so invested in the gay love triangle that’s going on. It’s so nice to see a rom com type film but with gays instead of straights… IT EVEN HAS AN AIRPORT SCENE!!!1!!1 the kiss at the end is one of the most awkward things I’ve ever seen but I’ll forgive them. 7.5/10

Every lgbtq+ movie I have watched ranked!

Since I haven’t watched a new movie in like 2 months I am going to rank ALL of the lgbt movies I have ever watched for content :) This can also be used as a reference if you ever want to recommend something and don’t know if I’ve reviewed it already

Each film will be ranked based on how much I personally enjoyed it as opposed to how technically good it is as a film

Also the order may be different from what scores I’ve given before (eg something I gave an 8 might be below something I gave a 7) cause my opinion might have changed or my scoring at the time was a weee bit biased

I’ll probably pin this and add to it whenever I make a new review

I will also be including the tv shows I have reviewed just cause

  1. Black Swan - MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE FILM!!! I am unsure of the general consensus on whether this is an lgbt movie but I count it because the main characters is canonically bisexual basically
  2. The Handmaiden - just found out there’s two versions of this! the extended cut is the one I prefer and also the one I was talking ab in my review. it’s only 20 minutes longer but the order of the film is different and better imo. the one on Netflix is the theatrical cut but the one on fsharetv is the extended cut and free!
  3. Moonlight - *through tears* BEAUTIFUL
  4. Brokeback Mountain - there’s a reason this film is as influential as it is
  5. Portrait of a Lady on Fire - I love the ending so much I know that’s not a revolutionary opinion but I love it so much

  11. Young Royals - Boarding school upper echelon gays and scholarship(?) commoner boy gays
  12. Holding the Man - be prepared to cry like a fucking baby

  14. Breakfast on Pluto - I love you Cillian Murphy❤
  15. Maurice- So ahead of its time
  16. Your Name Engraved Herein - if I hear one more person say this is 'Asian Call Me By Your Name’ I will burst into flames (in a bad way)

  43. Heartstopper - cute and gay and cute and gay
  44. Rafiki - Made me cry but at the weirdest times
  45. 4th Man Out - Even though its not in the middle the is the most average film on this list so use this as a centre point
  46. The Imitation Game - My opinion of this film has gone down immensely since I found out how dirty they did Alan Turing
  47. The Favourite - Most of my enjoyment of this film is just the casting choices
  48. Tangerine- absolute chaos (in a good way) filmed on a couple of iphone fives

  55. The Power Of The Dog - unfortunately boring soz
  56. The Half of It - It took me a week to finish this
  57. Happy Together - I don’t understand why this movie is so loved. Second most controversial ranking on this list.
  58. Water Lilies - lets just say Adèle Haenel and Céline Sciamma (writer and director) showed their talents a lot better in Portrait of a Lady on Fire
  59. Hurricane Bianca - The type of film you’d expect (no hate you might like it)

N/AThe Living End - Didn’t actually finish this so I won’t rank but just know that I probably wont be finishing it

The cakemaker

Hmm. The premise for this movie is pretty interesting but I think it was a bit too long. Maybe I’m just tired idk. Ok so basically a German dude(Thomas) has an affair with an Israeli guy (Oren) who is married (to Anat). Oren dies and Thomas goes to Israel and by being there at the right place at the right time ends up working at Anat’s cafe. The cinematography(?) is pretty calm and there are a lot of silent moments but I think that works better with the film. It is also kinda predictable. I was literally thinking (spoilers) ‘lmao imagine if Anat and Thomas get together’ and then they fucking did! I ended up being ok with that decision (on the writers part) by the end though. Apart from that its a really sweet movie that explores grief and human connection and I would recommend if you enjoy movies that have unspoken subtext and are more indieish. Random addition I thought Thomas was a pretty boring character. Thank you to the person who recommended this! 6.5/10 not my kind of movie.

Hurricane Bianca

ummmmmmm if you like Bianca del rio go for it??? idk what to say 4/10

Call me by your name

Ok so I know this film is about a romance between a 17 and 24 year oldbut for this review I will be ignoring that since i kinda just want to talk about the technical sort of aspects if that makes sense. I will also be ignoring how armie hammer is maybe a cannibal??? Idk man. Just know that I DO KNOW NOW but when I watched this I didn’t. Ok so first off this film is beautiful. So beautiul in fact you can completely ignore how little you understand about the plot. Maybe I’m just dumb but the dialogue is SO VAGUEEEapparently there’s a confession scene??? I definitely missed that. Everyone is speaking in riddles all the time and I feel like it’s one of this movies where you’re expected to watch it like 3 times so you can dissect every part of the script or something. Somehow though I was still invested in the plot which is great! Not so great is when you watch as mr chalamet cums in an apricot and then watch it get eaten. I know the movies is about intimacy or something and I actually read the book (I know, I know) and there’s an even worse scene in that (GROSSNESS WARNING FOR THE NEXT SENTENCE) where the old one watches the young one do a shit and rubs his stomachto help push the shit out (I am so sorry). On the upside I definitely want to move to the south of italy because of this movie. 8/10 I know I didn’t mention it much but the cinematography and stuff really is beautiful

Dating amber

This is definitely one of those movies where if it was straight I would give no fucks BUT it’s gay so I gave all the fucks. Set in 1995(?) in Ireland, Eddie (the redhead guy from handsome devil!!) is gay and so is amber. They pretend to date to get people off their backs and then shenanigans ensue. I’ll be honest the plots not anything new buuuuuuuuut I don’t care cause it’s sweet and AMBER AND HER GIRLFRIEND ARE THE CUTEST COUPLE!!!! Spoilers ahead a bit just a warning. WHY DID HE KISS HIS TEACHER?!?!?! PLZ I JUMPED BACK IN MY SEAT I HAD TO PAUSE THE MOVIE. The second hand embarrassment was very real from that scene. Fionn O’Shea does a great job of giving me second hand embarrassment cause I had to skip that bit in handsome devil where he sings in the school talent show✋. I know there had to be drama but I wanted so badly for them to be friends the whole time also no shade but why would you just give someone £2000 like come on. Thank you so much to the person that recommended this to me! I absolutely recommend the watch and it’s on amazon prime!8.5\10

Duck Butter

ok so let me just preface this by saying: I haven’t watched an lgbt movie in a while and OH MY GOD I didn’t realise how much I missed lesbain cinema ok so this movie is not liked by a lot of people it seems??? Idk it doesn’t have the best reviews and stuff but I loved it?? I went into this expecting to dislike this movie and it was actually really good lmao. so basically these two girls meet at a bar and decide to speedrun and entire relationship by spending 24 hours together without sleep (why no sleep? plz). That’s the WHOLE movie. Idk why but I was really invested and interested not just in the story but in the actual characters and their backgrounds and stuff. Also I’ve loved Alia Shawkat since arrested development. Content warning for a lot of sex lmao 9/10

Booksmart

I usually don’t love teen high school type movies but this one was Very Good. It’s about two friend that decide to say fuck it on their last day of school and go to a crazy party and do crazy shit bc they’ve spent their school lives being good girls for no reason. I’m calling it a teen high school type movie cause it kinda has a relation to high school but tbh it’s mainly about the relationship between these bffs and how it’s gonna have to change as they carry on with their lives and stuff. One of the friends is a lesbian but it’s like ‘life partners’ where it’s a pretty small part of their overall character and is not treated like a weird thing. I actually really liked the story even if it is a bit unrealistic but I don’t think it was meant to be realistic anyways. 8.5/10

Battle of the Sexes

Emma stone??? EMMA STONE AS A LESBIAN??????? This movie is technically about the real life story of Billie Jean king dismantling the patriarchy with her sick tennis skills but can also be seen as a cute lesbian love story. Either way this movie is pretty cool. Ngl I got bored everytime Steve Carell was on screen no hate I just wasn’t interested in his character at all. Apart from that this movie is worth the watch 8/10

Tangerine

Ok so this movie was made with literally a couple iphone fives and 100,000 dollars (which is TINY for a movie) and you can kinda tell BUT its kinda what gives it it’s charm??? It’s about two trans women (played by ACTUAL trans women, which unfortunately is not very common) who are both sex workers in, i think hollywood? somewhere in california. Tbh im not from there and i cant speak for how accurate it is but it seems like an authentic portrayl of life, mabye just cause of the iphone 5s. It’s pretty entertaining but ngl the music is a bit terrible lmao. 7/10

Life partners

This movie was good I guess but it was made even BETTER by the fact that body Leighton meester AND Gillian Jacobs were in it (full disclosure they don’t play a couple). Basically it’s just about their very close friendship changing when Gillian Jacobs gets a long term boyfriend. Leighton meester (I don’t remember the character names) is a lesbian but it’s very much just a small part of her. It’s never played as ‘different’ and her personality is not based around it which was quite refreshing. Don’t expect to be blown away by the story but the acting is good and it’s a fun time 7/10

Paris is burning

Ummmm… Best documentary ever??? I literally felt all emotions. Paris is Burning is about 1980s drag-ball culture and the black and latino trans women and gay men who were a part of it. It’s literally such an important documentary, if you don’t watch this what are you doing. 10/10 of course

Rafiki

This movie was really sweet but also made me want to die. It literally is SO SAD at parts I was fucking angry crying. We see two girls Kena and Ziki, fall in love despite their dad’s being rivals in politics, but it’s not very Romeo and Juliet, the movie focuses mainly on how hard it is to be gay in Kenya. Despite being quite sad at times the movie does have some upbeat scenes that made me smile. The endings slightly too ambiguous but the optimistic side of ambiguous so I like to think the overall tone of the movie is happy. Warning for serious blood boiling homophobia and people getting beat up. I mainly liked this movie although some of the editing choices confused me. Probably don’t watch if you want a rom com lol 7/10

In my graphic design class we had an assignment to create poster for our favourite movie. So I’ve picked Call Me By Your Name, and here it is. This is my first poster, and I’m so proud of it. The reason that I’m so proud of it is because everything that you see is done by hand. For the longest time I was telling myself that I couldn’t draw and that I can only work digitaly. So, when I got to do this, I was scared and anxious but still, I did it. I know that there is a long way to go and that I will become better, but for now I’m proud of it. Also, I hop that you like it.
