Mighty Thor was the silver age Marvel hero that Stan Lee had the least to do with. He came up with the basic concept, but didn’t even write it, he passed it to his brother Larry Lieber. This is why early Thor comics were so weird and felt so “off” from other Marvel books at the time.
If you want a no-prize “in universe” explanation for why Thor acts so different in the early days, it’s long been said that when initially transformed, Thor was initially just Don Blake pretending to be Thor, which is why he talks about particle physics and doesn’t remember Asgard, Loki, or Odin. Little by little, Thor’s true memories and personality asserted themselves.

This panel is indicative of this whole crazy issue where Merlin comes back from a 1000 year sleep to try to take over the US. He reveals he’s no magician at all but actually a mutant, hunts for JFK who was the president (shown in this panel) and fights Thor, who’s hammer for some reason is depicted with a long handle through this whole issue. It’s filled with a trip to Cape D’Or, a random bus saving at the beginning, cops who don’t believe he’s Merlin, the Washington momument turned into a javelin… This is a comic!
