This tumblr openly mocks elected officials who shouldn’t hold office, but every once in awhile I try to highlight awesome legislators for their work. Missouris Rep. Stacey Newman is one such legislator.

Via Jezebel:

Missouri State Representative Stacey Newman is deeply concerned about the state’s gun violence, and figures perhaps it might help matters to make guns a little harder to buy. Luckily, she’s got a perfect model right in front of her: Missouri’s abortion restrictions, some of the most onerous in the country.

As St. Louis magazine reports, Newman has pre-filed a bill for the upcoming legislative session that would subject gun buyers to the exact same restrictions currently faced by people seeking abortions.

You can read the full text of House Bill 1397 here; it sweetly proposes that gun buyers have a 72-hour waiting period imposed upon them, and have to “confer and discuss with a licensed physician” and risk factors that might arise “from the proposed firearm purchase:”

This isn’t the first time Newman has used her legislative awesomeness for good. Last year she sponsored a similar bill that would restrict vasectomies.

Missouri Republican state Rep. Paul Joseph Wieland does not want his three daughters to have access to birth control, in their case through the group plan offered by Wieland’s employer, the state of Missouri. The plan does not require women to use birth control, of course, but the mere fact that his daughters might disobey his anti–birth control teachings bothers Wieland. A judge asked why Wieland doesn’t just tell his daughters, “We expect you do abide by our religious tenets.” Wieland’s lawyer, Timothy Belz, replied, “Well, we all have high hopes for our kids, that is true. We all expect and want them to obey us, they don’t always … ” Thus Wieland would like a little help from the government just in case his girls disobey Daddy’s religious beliefs.

Belz also argued that federal minimums on what a standard health care plan must cover is the equivalent of passing “an edict that said that parents must provide a stocked, unlocked liquor cabinet in their house whenever they’re away for their minor and adult daughters to use.” The Wieland team also compared contraception to pornography. I suppose both prevent pregnancy, in their way.

Photo of Wieland and the women he’s trying to deny birth control coverage to is via his Twitter account.

“Cori Bush, a progressive community leader and veteran Black Lives Matter activist, won a House seat in Missouri, becoming the state’s first Black woman to represent the state in Congress, according to CNN projections.”

Tom McCrea: Pruitt-Igoe complex, St. Louis, Missouri, 1955

The Wendell O. Pruitt Homes and William Igoe Apartments, known together as Pruitt–Igoe, were joint urban housing projects first occupied in 1954 in the US city of St. Louis, Missouri. Living conditions in Pruitt–Igoe began to decline soon after completion in 1956. By the late 1960s, the complex had become internationally infamous for its poverty, crime, and racialsegregation. All 33 buildings were demolished with explosives in the mid-1970s, and the project has become an icon of failure of urban renewal and of public-policy planning.

Union Depot, Kansas City, Missouri, 1878-1915.

Union Depot opened in Kansas City in 1878 in the area now called West Bottoms.. At the time, it was considered much too large for the area and got the nickname “Jackson County Insane Asylum” Ironically, by 1903,the year planning began on the New Union Station, Kansas City had tripled in size and the depot could not handle the traffic of 180 trains a day,That combined with the confined area that allowed no room for expansion and the damage done by the flood of 1903, meant the depots days were numbered.

An envelope from the Indian Agency, out of Buffalo, Missouri. Colonel Walter Gamel came from a long line of heads of the Indian Agency following John Gamel, Walter, and Ralph.

In 1831, George Washington Gamel became the first Gamel to settle in Missouri after leaving Tennessee. He ordered several wagonloads of cut logs from a sawmill in Rolla and they were hauled to the Buffalo, area and used to construct a home. His son, John, who was Randy’s great-great-grandfather, was the first in a line of Gamels to serve as an Indian agent.
Originally, Indian agents in this country fell under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army. Later they were part of the Department of the Interior. Now, all agents work for the tribes. John started what is now known as the MOARLA Indian Agency in 1882, contracting with the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory. That contract runs for 175 years. The Five Civilized Tribes are the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole.
John Gamel served as the Indian agent for 20 years and his territory was Oklahoma and New Mexico. Then his son, Walter, whose first wife was Cherokee, served in that capacity for most of 50 years with his territory being Oklahoma and Texas. His son, Ralph Sr. took on the job after that, serving for 20 years with his territory being the state of Oklahoma.
