Ever tried Cai Cong (菜聪) Anxi oolong tea?

Our partner, Master Zhang, cultivates this little-seen tea cultivar in his biodiverse tea fields in Daping. The light oxidation of this tea’s traditional finish complements the dessert-like flavors of Cai Cong with a buttery, creamy finish.

Year of the monkey gives off a lovely sweet scent.

This pot - the panda pot is 95ml and also from Bitter Leaf Teas!

I steep this tea at 205F starting with a rinse - to 15sec+ infusions

Just look at those leaves!

Year of the Monkey Sheng puerh is deliciously sweet with a nice mineral finish. It’s light and drinkable all day. I kicked off the spring semester with this tea because I knew it would put my mind at ease. Everything I’ve gotten from Bitter Leaf Teas so far has been wonderful, and of course this tea doesn’t let me down! 3-6 infusions, YotM continues to deliver, with tastes of winter berry and some wheat notes. This tea lasted me about 15 infusions before I was tea’d out! You can find their shop here. I’ve yet to be disappointed with anything I get from them!

If you have any questions comments or concerns please feel free to send me a PM! Want to decide which tea I review next? Don’t hesitate to ask!

Tea has become a part of the regimen for most popular weight loss programs. The beverage is long associated with improving metabolic rates thereby helping to shed the extra calories. Tea is a healthy alternative to sugary sodas and other high calorie beverages. Chinese Oolong is a good ’weight loss tea’. However, the blended varieties may contain laxatives and diuretics that aid weight loss but are not particularly good for your health in the long run.

Oolong is said to improve vitality and lifespan. Incidence of cardiovascular disease and occurrence of cancer are said to be comparatively lower among tea drinkers. Antioxidants in the beverage are said to lessen the severity of rheumatoid arthritis, boost immunity, fight tooth decay, and relieve tension and headache. Tea drinking has been very popular in China, India, and Japan for centuries. Oolong is said to have many benefits including lowering of blood pressure and treating skin rashes and eczema.

Oolong has long been considered the connoisseur’s delight, being a delicate flavored beverage loved by locals and foreigners. Oolong can be brewed multiple times as it never turns bitter to taste. Re-brewing is even said to improve flavor. It is common to steep the same oolong leaves a several times, the third and fourth brews are said to be ‘the best flavored’.

Oolong tea has been recognized as a 'weight loss tea’ because in comparison to black variant, it undergoes minimal processing and retains many of its original chemical constituents. It is said be beneficial in the following ways:

  • High concentration of catechin polyphenols increases thermogenesis, by helping in burning fats.
  • Reduces cholesterol by causing slow release of carbohydrates, preventing sharp increase in blood-insulin.

Green tea extract containing polyphenols and caffeine is a potent fat oxidant that boosts metabolic rate by 4% without elevating heart rates. A cup of coffee may contain anything between 4-5 times the caffeine that the same serving of tea contains. Due to lower caffeine content many people are now switching to drinking tea. This global trend is being observed in the decision of coffee giants Starbucks who are considering the idea of selling premium Darjeeling tea at its 17,000 outlets worldwide.

Preferably, you should drink tea without milk and sugar. Intake of sugar and milk will counter the effect on weight loss. So if you want to lose weight, make sure to cut the milk and sugar. Drink oolong tea to stay healthy!

The above image shows the manufacture process for 5 types of popular, commercially available teas. An increasing amount of research is not being done on the antioxidant property of tea, with particular focus on black, green and oolong tea. However, at present, limited information is available on white tea. What studies have been done, have demonstrated the antioxidant capacityofwhite tea to be similar to that of green tea, which is attributed to the high levels of EGCG & ECG which are present in this specialty type of tea. As such, those of you looking to contribute to your health using tea as the medium should note that of the 5 types of tea listed, the green & white variety (respectively) contain the greatest ‘bang for your buck’ in terms of antioxidant value.
