#origins

I’ve watched quite a few movies based on hit comic books, and I’ve noticed something. In almost every first film of the franchise, the plot entails cluing us onto the hero’s origins. They’re just starting out, or we see what’s motivating them. And so forth. The reason for this might be that the studios want to tell their own story, and they have to start from the beginning. The reason might be that this is their way of introducing new fans into the character. Or maybe those origins are just so crucial to the characters that they just want to see how they’d look on film.

Though, I gotta admit, I’m getting a little annoyed by it in some cases. How many times are we going to see Bruce Wayne put on the cowl for the first time, or Uncle Ben teach Peter Parker that Great Power Comes With Great Responsibility? And really, if the main draw of these films is the fans of the comics, do they really need to be reminded? They probably know more about the hero’s origins than the film studios!

it’s really funny to see people trying to moralize how we ran john green off the site asking whether he “deserved” it or not because at the time the general consensus was just that he was cringe. there was no question of “deserving” it or not, people just thought it was funny.

sure there was the post calling him the “creepy uncle at a pool party” for how he interacted with his teenage fans and there was the video he and his brother made defending capitalism and the whole “anne frank died of a disease, not nazis” shtick that did him no favors, but imo one of the biggest precursors to his downfall was how openly masturbatory he was being about his own writing.

at one point he reblogged a gifset of the fault in our stars and added a caption gushing about how “has there ever been a movie where the GIRL kisses the GUY first? i don’t think so”. this, combined with his image to maintain, made him the perfect target to fuck with by editing his posts: he would not only notice your edit, he was also obligated to reblog it with a clarification that his previous reply was edited, which in turn could be edited further.

there wasn’t a coherent agenda behind this at the time and any attempts to apply an agenda to it after the fact are post hoc justifications for what was, in essence, just taking the piss. this has happened to pretty much every celebrity stupid/brave enough to make a tumblr account - people fuck with them relentlessly. the only exception i can think of is frank ocean, who is also the only celebrity to ever truly “get” tumblr as a platform.

as long as we’re having this history lesson to counter revisionism, i’d like to point out that the infamous copypasta was not invented whole cloth to fuck with john green - it was actually lifted from this post:

we all know it wasn’t exactly love at first sight for marinette to adrien but i feel like its so easy to forget that it wasn’t that for chat noir towards ladybug either. first when he saw her she was this clumsy, shy girl who he thought he’d be leading and showing the ropes despite knowing nothing himself - and then she threw him across a stadium into a rock giant using his tail.
