Cephalopods In Glass Houses…

This Veined Octopus (Amphioctopus marginatus) is trying to form a protective shelter from two pieces of a broken glass.

This species of octopus is also known as the ‘coconut octopus’, as it is often found using two discarded coconut shells to hide in. Like hermit crabs with shells, it will actively investigate other items for protective potential.

Here the octopus tries in vain to make two broken glass halves fit together to form a little protective fort. Filmed in the Lembeh Strait, Sulawesi, Indonesia.

[Image ID: an ink drawing of a brown person drawn from the shoulders up. They are drawn in profile, their eyes are closed and their head is tilted up. They have no hair, and gold moon- and teardrop-shaped ornaments on their scalp. Their eyebrow is pierced with two gold hops and their ears have several gold earrings in various places, including a chain with a blue and white shell. Around their head and shoulders are swirling blue-green stylized waves capped with white foam. /end ID]

A small group of us went out looking for whales one day out in Palau, far out from shore. We thought we’d seen signs of the whales, so a few of us jumped into the water and while we were looking around these Silky Sharks suddenly appeared out of nowhere (we were out in the bluewater, meaning that you couldn’t see the bottom or any structure or island around you). The Silky Sharks were attracted by our splashing and the sounds of the boat.

These types of sharks live out in the open ocean, well away from coastal waters and reefs. To survive in that barren environment, they need to be extremely fast, agile and able to sense and hunt prey from a great distance. I loved interacting with these beautiful and inquisitive sharks - photo taken offshore Palau, Western Pacific Ocean
