Quatrilobed Plaque, Guillaume Julien, c. 1300-1310,Cleveland Museum of Art: Medieval Art

This rare four-lobed plaque is a superb example of émail de plique, a virtuoso enameling method popular in Paris during the late 1200s with the court of Philip the Fair (reigned 1285–1314). Plaques like this were prepared in advance to be attached to larger works including crosses, chalices, reliquaries, or even sewn into precious fabrics for decoration. Given the very distinctive shape of this plaque it is certain to have been created for a specific commission.
Size: Overall: 4.8 x 4.8 cm (1 7/8 x 1 7/8 in.)
Medium: Gold, translucent enamel

Semi-circular Openwork Plaque, Benin, Africa,

In a culture without written records, these plaques hung on the walls of interior courtyards of the royal palace and served to recount important events in the history of the kingdom.

This work depicts a king with a human torso but with legs formed by mudfish; he needs the help of his two attendants to stand.

According to Benin tradition, ailing kings who were thought to have lost their power were put to death. After one legendary oba’s legs became paralyzed, he claimed his legs had been miraculously transformed into mudfish to avoid execution.

According to tradition, the mudfish was a symbol of Benin kings because both were capable of crossing into different environments. The African mudfish can move across both land and water; similarly, kings were believed to move across both earthly and spiritual realms.

For the same reason, frogs and crocodiles also symbolize kings. The oba’s ability to accomplish great things is symbolized here by the elephant trunk ending in a human hand.

Between 1500 and 1897,

Been meaning to post this but finally done on the sign. It’s out curing right now with the final coat of weatherproofing polyurethane. Since it’s going to be an outdoor sign cant have the weather ruining it. It’s entirely wood burnt. I thought about carving around the outside of the dragons to make it pop more but I feel I’d ruin it if I did since I’m a novice at such things. Good practice tho since it was first time wood burning something.

Book Cover Plaque: Christ in Majesty, ca. 1185–1210

Gilded copper and champlevé enamel

The earliest known textual reference to the famous enamels produced in the city of Limoges during the twelfth through fourteenth centuries concerns a book cover seen in the Abbey of Saint Victor in Paris in the 1160s and intended for an English abbot. Though this book cover seems not to have survived, it might have borne some similarity to the one seen here. Plaques showing Christ in majesty surrounded by symbols of the evangelists, usually paired with a plaque showing the Crucifixion, were produced in large numbers by Limoges enamelers. The variety of textures and patterns created through the masterful engraving and stippling of the five appliqué figures make this a particularly noteworthy example of a product for which Limoges artists were widely recognized and admired

Terracotta funerary plaque

Attic Greek, ca. 520–510 B.C. (Archaic period)

Prothesis (laying out of the dead); below, chariot race

In the latter sixth century B.C., the elaborate series of funerary plaques set into the walls of rectangular tombs were replaced by single plaques with holes for attachment. The chariot race, a recurring theme in Attic funerary art, may evoke the funeral games held in honor of legendary heroes, such as those in book 23 of the Iliad, when Achilles honored his deceased friend Patroklos.

Hi everyone!
I wasn’t really sure how to post something like this, but here goes –

My late boyfriend, Benjamin Sutton, took his life on the 31st of March 2019.

His anniversary is coming up in a few days, and I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do for it, but today I thought of what I would like to do.

Ben’s father has been trying to set up a small memorial plaque for him at a garden memorial up North, but still needs $700 to have it installed; I want to raise the money to help go towards this, but I can’t afford to fund it myself.

So here I am - I want to ask if you could please help me to reach $700 by the 31st of this month. (I would like to surprise his Dad on the day with this, so if I can raise it by that date, that would be really cool.)

If of course you can do so - please don’t feel pressured if you cannot! If that’s the case, I would really appreciate if you could spread the word instead, if possible!

Of course I am asking for donations, but I’m also prepared to do some simple sketch commissions as well!

If you would just like to donate, please use this link!

Ben’s Memorial Plaque

(please let me know if the link or button doesn’t work!)

Any amount is appreciated, just whatever you can spare!

Otherwise, if you would like to have a commission done, please send me a private message!  (I’m only taking on very simple commissions, as I don’t want to overwhelm myself with complicated ones.)

Commission options and Prices:

  1. Digital One character sketch - $30 USD (colour optional + $20)
  2. Digital Two character sketch - $50 USD (colour optional + $30)
  3. Traditional one character sketch - $60 USD (colour optional + $75)

Hey everyone!

We’ve almost hit $700 in donations! Only $100 more to go!

I just want to thank everyone who has donated so far - Thank you so much!   This honestly means the world to me, and I’m sure Ben would be so touched by this as well.

After we’ve reached the goal, I’ll let you all know! Thank you again!

Goal reached!!

Thank you so much, everyone..!!
I will make an official post tomorrow to thank everyone, as well as acknowledge the day - thank you all again, I really really appreciate this, so so much.

This vintage hand-painted commemorative plaque from the 1960 Long Island Science-Industry Exhibition

This vintage hand-painted commemorative plaque from the 1960 Long Island Science-Industry Exhibition plaque was presented by the Orientation Group at the Wright-Patterson U.S. Air Force base in Dayton, Ohio. We presume that missiles lent for presentation at the fair were connected with the Air Force and relate to their presentation of the plaque. We love the Sixties Space Age imagery! In honor of All Souls Day, this antique repousse plaque inspired by the apocalyptic visions in the Book of Revelations, the Four Horses of the Apocalypse and their riders, personified as female figures, make a triumphant entrance above a rainbow that crosses the sky. In the middle, an epic battle between angels and demons. At the bottom of the plaque, earthquakes predicted in Revelation break apart buildings and swallow people into fissures in the earth.http://www.georgeglazer.com/decarts/objects/revdish.html

Eurykleia washing Odysseus’s feet

Terracotta plaque, ca. 450 B.C., Classical, Greek, Melian,19,7x18,6 cm

The Metropolitan Museum of Art    Inv. 25.78.26

One of the dramatic threads in the account of Odysseus’s return to Ithaka is the gradual revelation of his identity. Here, Odysseus appears seated before a columned facade that represents his palace. Before him stand his son, Telemachos, and his wife,Penelope. As the old nurse,Eurykleia, washes Odysseus’s feet, she recognizes him from an old scar. Artistic depictions such as this are interesting not only for the illustrative detail that they provide but also for the subjects chosen.
