So, in 2020, with the Covid pandemic, once the coffee shops reopened and some students wanted lessons « as usual » (we mostly turned to online teaching and even now I have some of the private lessons online still, after all it works well that way too^^).
Anyway, I decided to keep all the cupsI’ve got to use since bringing your own tumbler wasn’t accepted. Every now and then I also forget my own tumbler and have to use one of those. I feel so bad when I do so because of the pollution it holds. And so I decided to keep all the cups I’ve got to use between March 2020 and March 2021. I studied design and ended up hating how it works on making people dependent of trash, just to get them to use there money. Those designs are super cute indeed. And similarly I love the starbucks cards designs but now I take pictures of them but don’t get any. I can’t continue to participate to this. But this change made me unfit for the world I live in, unfit socially (as if I wasn’t awkward enough already..) but this is what it is I guess. I need to align my actions to what I know is right. But I’m still learning to not be mad at myself when I fail… and as I fail often I still feel like crap.
And yes there is some @mcdonaldsjapan @mcdonalds and @cainz_official cups in there as well. Same deal but worse : still not allowed to bring our own cup there so I avoid going there as much as I can.
Well.. what should I do with all this cute trash now ???

Transcript of Cartoon

This cartoon has nine panels, arranged in a three by three grid, with a small “kicker” panel under the bottom of the cartoon.

Panel 1

We see two people on the train tracks. They are not tied to the tracks, but they are tied together, so neither one could move without the other. One person has black hair in a pony tail; the other has wavy hair and is wearing capri pants. Ponytail has a panicked expression, while Capri looks wryly amused.

PONYTAIL: I can’t believe we’re tied together on the train tracks.

CAPRI: Are we sure these are train tracks?

Panel 2

Ponytail turns her head back towards Capri to urgently suggest a plan.

PONYTAIL: If we work together, we can crawl off before a train comes.

CAPRI: There’s no evidence any train is coming.

Panel 3

Ponytail shouts a bit, angry, and Capri laughs.

PONYTAIL: The train comes at this time every day!

CAPRI: HA! What’s happened in the past can’t predict the future.

Panel 4

Ponytail panics, yelling, and Capri responds with amused dismissal.

PONYTAIL: The tracks are shaking!

CAPRI: it’s natural shaking. Haven’t you heard of earthquakes.

Panel 5

Ponytail angrily yells, and Capri sneers. (It’s a mix of a grin and a sneer).

PONYTAIL: LISTEN TO ME! I’m a train engineer, and

CAPRI: Pfft! “Engineers” are just in it for the money.

Panel 6

A close up of their heads. Ponytail is terrified now, sweat droplets flying off her. Capri remains amused.

PONYTAIL: Let’s get off the tracks, just in case! HURRY!

CAPRI: Expend all that effort over what might be nothing?

Panel 7

Ponytail yells, her eyes as big as dessert plates.

PONYTAIL: I CAN SEE THE TRAIN! WE’RE GONNA DIE!

CAPRI: You’re being hysterical.

Panel 8

This panel contains only a sound effect, in big overlapping letters, with stars flying around: CRASH

Panel 9

The same two characters are hovering in the sky, in angel outfits, including wings and halos.  Capri is shrugging but still smiling; Ponytail is yelling angrily.

CAPRI ANGEL: Okay, maybe there was a train.

PONYTAIL ANGEL: WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU?

Small kicker panel under the bottom of the cartoon.

A bald guy talks to a fat guy with a ponytail and glasses (i.e., me, the cartoonist).

BALD GUY: Cute cartoon, but what if some readers don’t get that it’s a metaphor for global warming denial?

BARRY: I’ll find some subtle way to let them know!

[ Ten horned larks, all collected around 1900. The birds on the left were collected near Chicago, while the ones on the left were collected in California. ]

“Among these dead are hundreds of Illinoisan birds, many of them captured and killed in the decades after the city’s founding. For years, curators and collection managers had noticed that something was off about some of them. Birds from the late 19th century were noticeably darker than other specimens of their own species from other time periods or other locations. They suspected the birds had been stained by the soot that once choked Chicago’s skies—but without looking at the birds more closely, they couldn’t be sure.

Their drabber colors remained a mystery until a few years ago, when two University of Chicago graduate students took an interest in the birds. In 2014, Carl Fuldner, a historian of photography, and Shane DuBay, an evolutionary biologist who studies alpine birds, secured a grant to photograph some specimens in the Field Museum’s collection.

Using a scanning electron microscope, they confirmed that the wings were covered in black carbon. Black carbon is a tiny waste product of coal combustion. It’s of great note to scientists: Black carbon contributes to global warming, but it’s also a potent form of toxic air pollution. A particle of black carbon is so small that it can penetrate deep into the lungs’ alveoli.”

Oil and grime, poison sludge Diesel clouds and noxious muck Slime beneath me, slime up above Ooh, you’ll love my toxic love Toxic love
I see the world and all the creatures in it I suck ‘em dry and spit ‘em out like spinach I feel the power, it’s growing by the minute And pretty soon you’re gonna see me wallow in it
I feel good, a special kind of horny Flowers and trees depress and frankly bore me I think I’ll spew them all with cyanide saliva Pour me a puke cocktail and take me to the driver
Filthy brown acid rain Pouring down like egg chow mein All that’s foul, all that’s stained Breeding in my toxic brain
I think watching Fern Gully as a child has added much to me becoming a liquid rubber fetishist as an adult…
