• • •the camera goes out of focus as a male figure dressed in a shimmery white-gold steps onto the stage where two pieces of long, yellow fabric hang from the ceiling. as he begins to wrap the fabric along his arms, the camera refocuses and a gentle voice narrates over the aerial silk performance: “there was a withering tree that my mother and i would always pass on the way to primary school.” the korean translation of his spoken chinese appears along the bottom of the screen. it appears he will speak his native tongue throughout the video. “on the top branch, there was a bird’s nest. for weeks, i would stop underneath that branch and listen to the baby birds sing. sometimes, if i was lucky, i would see the mama bird fly in with food for her young ones. then, one day, the baby birds stopped singing. mother told me that they had grown up and were now looking to build their own nest. she also told me that, like the baby birds, i will eventually grow up and leave home. i cried for them, and i cried for my mother, too. how lonely she must feel, speaking this truth.” he now hangs eight meters in the air, upside-down, his weight shifted to the fabric that now wraps around one of his legs. “looking back, i realize that leaving home is not just a part of life; it’s a necessity for success. like the baby birds leaving that nest on the top branch of the withering tree, i left china to perform here in korea. and here, i will soar.” with his free hand, he removes a large cloth scroll that had been clipped to his outfit. then, in one swift movement, he bites down on one end of the scroll, tilts his head back, and allows the cloth to unravel itself to showcase his chinese name written in practiced calligraphy.

• • •his voice-over returns for a training montage that flickers between each circus performer: “we’re all here for a reason. for some, this is where they want to be. they wake up, yet they are still dreaming. for others, this is a stepping stone. this isn’t their final destination, and they fall asleep wondering when they will be lucky enough to perform on a bigger stage.” the video pans to him drinking water. he gives a cheery wave and a thumbs up. “i am not that lucky, but i am fortunate. i’ve worked hard to get here, and i will continue to work hard to reach a place that i can be proud of.”
