I was thinking about all the things I left out of Reckless Chants #22, and I recalled this moment, which I hadn’t thought of in years and years. It’s hilarious so I’m telling it here:
It was the summer of 1995, and my best friend Filia was visiting me. One day, we decided to dress up in semi-matching outfits, for no other reason than that we wanted to. And what were these semi-matching outfits? Babydoll t-shirts that said grrrls rule, short cut-off denim shorts, combat boots…and fucking rainbow suspenders and rainbow kneesocks. We put on these outfits, and we thought we looked so cool that we should go walk around town and show our amazing fashion sense off. So, we paraded down the street in our wild rainbow outfits; we paraded down the street wearing these outfits and holding hands. Did I mention that I also had very short hair at the time? And as we walked down Main Street, a pick-up truck slowed down, beeped its horn at us, and two women leaned their heads out of the truck’s windows and said: “Hell yeah! Rock on!” We beamed at them and said to each other: “Wow, they really liked our outfits!”
Later that night, back at my house, we discussed our encounter with the women. It was then I thought about what they looked like, and said: “Dude, Filia, one of them had a buzzcut. They were lesbians. And…we were wearing rainbow stuff and holding hands.” We laughed until our sides hurt, we weren’t upset, but still, it had been totally inadvertent.
Those women weren’t really far off in their assumption, at least about me - I already had inklings that I was attracted to girls, a few short months later I admitted to myself that I wasn’t straight (though it took me another four years of going “am I gay? am I straight? am I bi?” before I felt truly comfortable in my identity), and a couple months after that I realized I was in hopeless love with Filia. They weren’t far off, but we hadn’t meant to look like a Pride Parade of two.
There was another mass shooting where at least five people (including the shooter) died. (Not to mention the one in Tennessee, though as far as I know so far nobody died from that one.) It was in Tulsa, on the 101th anniversary of the Tulsa massacre.
At this point every time there’s a mass shooting I just wonder “how did I not get caught in one yet?”
To be fair, there hasn’t been a record of a mass killings in my county. There were some around us (which includes two of the most infamous serial killers) but in this county alone all of the murders have either been personal or a robbery gone wrong. That doesn’t mean that it won’t happen at some point.
And of course because we’re so fucking used to mass shootings in the news, it’s going to be covered up by the Heard/Depp trial or some shit.
5 people were shot at the funeral for Da’Shontay King- a black man who was killed by the police who I missed in between all of the mass shootings, in Racine. I don’t know what the victim’s statuses are yet.
I didn’t know that yet ANOTHER cop killed a black person until this mass shooting happened even though it happened two hours away from me and now I’m starting to wonder how many more POC did the cops kill while we were focusing on mass shootings?
Two people were shot and killed in a church in Iowa. Hours after five people were shot in Racine. The day after 4 people were shot to death at a hospital in Tulsa. A few days after 21 people- including 19 children were shot to death in Uvalde…
