How To Get Started on Building Your Family Tree Without Help From Elders
If you are like me, and do not have many elder family members to turn to for help in discovering your family history, here are a couple of things you can do to get yourself started.
Talk to siblings and cousins. Ask them for anything they remember, names, dates, addresses, cities, church/places of worship, schools, anything they can remember will be helpful.
Try and find any old objects: photos, papers, baby books, baptism, bible records-sometimes there is useful information written on the back of old photos and keepsakes such as dates, names, places.
Start charting it out. Write down what you know. Start a free family tree online. Or just get a piece of paper and a pen and start charting out what you already know so that you can transition that to an online tree or a free template downloaded from online.
What if you don’t have any siblings/cousins? If you don’t have any siblings or cousins, at least any that you are comfortable talking to, use yourself as a resource. What do you remember? Do you remember a last name, your grandmothers maiden name? A place your aunt or uncle may have lived with your grandparents? What church did they attend? Was it local? Even the most smallest thing that you can remember could be important.
Perhaps turn to the local genealogy society/group in your hometown, or your parents/grandparents hometown. Local groups can be a most valuable resource.
The beginning is usually the hardest, but use what you know, use these steps as a mini guide, and get started. Remember, you can be your own most valuable resource.

Emperor Nicholas I had 79 legitimate (incl. morganatic) great-grandchildren — 72 of whom survived to childhood. Two of whom became reigning monarchs [Emperor Nicholas II of Russia and King Constantine I of Greece]. Two became Queen consorts of Romania [Princess Marie of Edinburgh] and of Denmark [Duchess Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin], while another became Crown Princess of Prussia [Duchess Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin]. One became the last Chancellor of the German Empire [Prince Maximilian of Baden, also known as Margrave of Baden], and another became a ruling Grand Duke of a German princely state [Mecklenburg-Schwerin].
Among the 72 great-grandchildren that survived to adulthood, 54 of them have living descendants today. Including King Felipe VI of Spain, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and the Prince of Wales.

- Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna of Russia is the mother of Princess Irina Alexandrovna, Prince Andrei, Feodor, Nikita, Dmitri, Rostislav, and Vasili Alexandrovich.
- Princess Maria of Greece and Denmark is the mother of Princess Nina Georgievna and Princess Xenia Georgievna.
- Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark is the father-in-law of Queen Elizabeth II, thus the grandfather of the Prince of Wales.
- Eight of Emperor Nicholas I’s great-grandchildren married each other: Duke Peter Alexandrovich of Oldenburg & Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna of Russia; Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark & Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia; Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich of Russia & Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha; Prince Feodor Alexandrovich of Russia & Princess Irina Paley.

Aside from being the mother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Princess Alice was also the niece of the last Empress of Russia Alexandra Feodorovna, and the daughter-in-law of Queen Olga of Greece (former Grand Duchess of Russia).
