During her college break, I finally got around to showing my first daughter Terminator, starring Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor.

“James Cameron’s first wife, Gale Ann Hurd, was his co-writer and producer.”

“So that’s why it’s so feminist.”

“He likes strong women characters. He divorced his first wife and married Linda Hamilton after the sequel, but she divorced him shortly after that. Hamilton claimed he really wanted to marry Sarah Connor.”

Her eyes got wide. “You mean he made his own MILF?”

“Uh, basically, yeah.”

Just read that plenty of German radio stations are only playing an abbreviated version of this song about teenagers coming out to their parents because of the “risqué” first line, so of course I had to link it in full length here.

The song begins with the straightforward line “Vincent kriegt keinen hoch, wenn er an Mädchen denkt” = “Vincent can’t get it up when he thinks of girls”

It’s pretty heavy slang, but there’s no law against profanity in Germany. So the problem, obviously, isn’t the not family-friendly language, but the supposedly not family-friendly content. Except that what the valiant protectors of innocent young listeners are objecting to isn’t explicit sexual content - it’s the absence of explicit sexual content. It would be funny, if it weren’t so deeply sad.

“John Connor gave me a picture of you once. I didn’t know why at the time. It was very old - torn, faded. You were young like you are now. You seemed just a little sad. I used to always wonder what you were thinking at that moment. I memorized every line, every curve. I came across time for you Sarah. I love you; I always have.”

Terminator, directed by James Cameron (1984)
