“I like this,” Sayori expressed, holding up a tiny porcelain pony with a pink and purple mane. When she noticed Monika’s curled lip, she put it carefully back down.
“Stay focused, Sayori. Stay sharp. Remember what we’re looking for?” Monika coaxed. Sometimes, being with Sayori felt like being with a child.
“A picture frame,” Sayori said quietly, as if she didn’t fully know.
“A picture frame for…?”
“Our photo. Your photo.” When Monika looked over at the other girl, she could see that she was blushing. It was so easy to get her flustered.
“That’s right, sweetie.” Monika grabbed Sayori by the waist, making her squeak. “Now be a good girl and focus.”
“Yes, Monika.” When she was released, Sayori scampered to the task like a little puppy. All that Monika had to do was trail behind her and watch as she picked up frame after frame. When she hovered over other trinkets, Monika would make a little cough, and that would set her right.
After a few minutes, she approached with a silver frame in her hands. “What about this one?” she asked cautiously, holding out the frame. It had a sweet design with cut out hearts. It would be perfect. But Monika could never let her have it easy.
“Mmm,” she tisked, pushing it away. “Maybe another one?”
“Oh. Okay.” Sayori turned around and put the frame down, resuming her task but seeming a bit deflated. It was easy to make her discouraged. All you had to do was deny her the simple pleasures in life.
After letting Sayori rummage around for a moment more, Monika grabbed the first frame off the shelf that she saw. “We’ll use this one,” she stated, and Sayori startled, turning around.
“That’s really nice. But the… umm…” Sayori trailed off, and Monika grabbed her wrist pulling her close. She knew that had to hurt.
“What is it?” Monika said, looking the other girl up and down.
“Oh no.” Sayori looked away, clearly flustered. “It’s nothing.”
“Good. It’s settled then.” Monika released her and started heading to the front, letting Sayori fumble along behind her. She knew what the problem was. The frame was too small for the photo. But Sayori would work it out. Maybe cut herself out of the photo, and leave the focus on Monika. That was just what she deserved
To everyone with a f/o who’s misunderstood in their own fanbase/media;
They appreciate you getting them. They truly appreciate you taking the time to see their story and understand it, so think about them as a person instead of the single personality trait the fanbase might have boiled them to, or the wrong turns taken when writing their story in canon. It’s one of the many reasons they love you so very much.
I know it can be so frustrating seeing your love be dumbed down to one thing or just entirely misinterpreted by everyone, but they know that you would never see them that way and they are so grateful for it.
