Scarred For Life: Volume 2 & Looking For a New England – Book Reviews

Both Brotherstone  and Lawrence’s Scarred For Life books and Simon Matthews’ Looking For a New England cover the same period of television and cinematic history in Britain, covering some same ground they come at it from slightly different angles, but both are very aware of the culturally powerful and distinctive time of the 1970s and 80s.When I first heard about the Scarred For Life project, a…

The Apparition Phase by Will Maclean: Book Review

The ‘X’ in Generation X (those born roughly between the early 1960s and late 70s/ early 80s) must surely refer to the X certificate formerly bestowed upon horror movies or ‘X’ as in X Files in relating to spooky paranormal mysteries. The other title bestowed by writer and broadcaster Bob Fischer upon the folk born of these times – ‘The Haunted Generation’ would seemingly confirm this. Maclean’s…

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!

It’s been uhhh many years since I last made a Scarred for Life story, but I’ve had this one in the works for a while and finally found the time to finish it up in time for ECCC. I don’t think there’s been a con since I released vol. 1 that at least one person hasn’t asked when I was going to make a new chapter, so I can finally tell y’all that time is NOW!

I’ll have physical copies of the comic at ECCC (next week! March 14-17) at table S9 and I’ll be selling them online after I get back, at which point I’ll also start posting the pages on my website. However, the physical version has six pages of extras that won’t be posted online, so if you want to see those then you’ll have to get the comic.

If you’re new to Scarred for Life, it’s my horror/comedy comic about two FBI agents and their intern, and one of the agents has a giant monster mouth full of chompy teeth on his stomach. Sometimes that causes issues. Chapter 7 is about friendship and letting go of anger. It’s not the best jumping on point, but most of vol. 1 is available online at 52nddoor(dot)com (I’m not making that a hyperlink because tumblr’s been weird about that recently).

Scarred for Life is a comic about two FBI agents and their intern. One of the agents has a monster mouth on his stomach, but that doesn’t effect his life as much as you might think. (CW: body horror)

These are the first three pages of the newest chapter, but the whole thing is available to read right now!

Newest chapter here.

Very beginning here.

New chapter of Scarred for Life is a go!!

And I actually just went and put the whole thing up at once, so you can read it ALL RIGHT NOW!!

I’ve been chipping away at a new Scarred for Life chapter this year, and now I’m almost done!! I should have the whole thing ready to go next week and of course I’ll post a link when it’s available, but until then have some random panels in various stages of completion.

So, when I was about 8 or 9 years old, I once went to this dentist by where I live. Now, as a kid, I didn’t have the best oral health, so I was going in for a root canal. I had been to this dentist before for fillings and cleanings and stuff, but on that particular day, my dentist was out of town, so I got a different one. Now I go in and sit down, she introduces herself, whatever, that whole thing. After that, she gives me the novacaine, which is one of the parts only because of the damn needle they have to shove in your damn mouth. So it starts to make my mouth numb as usual, only this time something was a little off. I noticed that I could still feel the area around my tooth she would be working on. I tried to tell her, but she waved me off saying that I was imagining it. Then the drill came out. She told me that if I felt any pain to raise my hand, and that’s what I did almost as soon as she started drilling. And I shit you not, she put my hand down and told me that I shouldn’t be feeling it, and to stop lying. It is, to this day, the most painful thing I have ever experienced in my life. Pure, unrelenting, pain. The thing was too, that she didn’t even finish, they had to the rest of it another time. From that point on, I LOATHED going to the dentist, and I still flinch whenever I hear that damn high pitched drill noise. So yeah, fuck that dentist chick.

Concept: Freaky Friday with Jim and Strickler, only instead of being worried about preserving their personal/professional standings they each need to figure out how to keep the other from getting killed before they can switch back.

omigod, YES!

draal gives jim some kind of ‘magic gem’ that’s supposed to help neutralize his closest enemy. he says the little incantation or whatever but nothing happens, and goes to bed that night thinking it was a dud.

cut to the next morning.

it’s still dark outside when jim blinks awake. he sits up and yawns and stretches his oddly sore shoulder, vision slowly clearing as the foggy edges of sleep start to clear. something warm brushes against his calf and he glances sideways at the person sleeping next to him before - WAIT.

shocked, he jerks back so fast he winds up toppling off the bed altogether. he lays on the floor for a long moment, heart racing, before finally working up the courage to peek back over the duvet. a little squeak erupts from his throat when he sees a familiar set of blue eyes squinting sleepily back at him.

“walt?”

“uh…” but it’s not his panicked voice that comes out of his mouth, it’s strickler’s.

“babe, are you okay?”

jim doesn’t answer, nor does he look back as he jumps to his feet, races across the room, and flings himself out into the hallway only to find, well, himself standing in his own bedroom doorway with a murderous expression on his face.

“young atlas, what did you do?”

Love. This.

Other fun moments:

  • Strickler having to talk Jim down from his “I slept with my mom!” panic (But Strickler can’t resist throwing in a Young Oedipus joke because when will he get an opportunity like that again?)
  • Strickler being infuriatinglygood at impersonating Jim. Like Jim is expecting his mom to see right through Strickler’s charade but no, she’s too relieved to have her sweet, sincere boy back to notice that he’s still a little off.
  • Jim coming up with an embarrassing reason why he can’t follow through with whatever plans his mom and Strickler made while Strickler fumesacross the table
  • Since Jim-as-Strickler can’t legally drive Strickler-as-Jim does it instead, leading to comments on how sweet and/or lame it is that Jim’s learning how to drive from his favorite teacher
  • (Stricklerdoesend up teaching Jim how to drive. Jim may or may not use his newfound skills to total the car by using it as a battering ram at some point. It’s fine. It’s fine.)
  • Strickler reluctantly stashes Jim in one of his private safehouses because it’s the only place that contains no information about the Order’s activities. Unfortunately it doescontain mementos from his past lives. Jim soon forgets snooping for intel in favor of asking Strickler about his past (Which Strickler is salty about until he gets into the groove of the history lesson aspect of it)
  • It’s all fun and games until Otto suspects something’s off and Shit Gets Real
  • (Also idk I’m sure Team Trollhunter are losing their minds about the whole thing but the Jim and Strickler shenanigans are the only part I care about)

I took my little sisters to an anime convention a few weeks ago and turns out the internet hasn’t taught them nearly as much as I thought it did because the look of sheer terror on their faces as they met their first furry was frickin PRICELESS
