A series of card illustrations I made for Dropmix- a card/ music game from Harmonix. I’d always wanted to make a series based on the seasons and this was the perfect opportunity!

Harp

Shares the symbolism of the ladder as leading to the next world. The harpist is Death. An emblem of King David in the Old Testament, and of Wales, and an attribute of Dagda, the Celtic fire god, who calls up the seasons and whose playing originally brought about the change of the seasons.

The Seasons. 1896. Alphonse Mucha.

Each: 21 1/8 x 40 ¾ in./53.6 x 103.5 cm

This larger format is rare; rarer still is a large version of the 1896 Seasons with such exceedingly fresh colors! You can feel the chill of Winter, the little birds huddling for warmth; the dewy wakefulness of Spring, fashioning herself a lyre, on which those little birds are expectantly perched; Summer is indolent, sleepy in the heat; but Autumn, Autumn, lush and fecund with her auburn hair, indulges the harvest by plucking the grapes from the vine, straight into her cup. It’s not only the passage of time that makes this series rare: these images were difficult to find even at the time of their publication. The editor of The Poster couldn’t help a reader locate this set back in 1899, concluding: “they are getting scarce” (January 1899, p. 42). This is the larger variant with the Seasons text at bottom.

Available at auction February 25, 2018.

I got into Touken Ranbu a while ago, but recently, I watched some of the musicals and stage plays. I fell in love with Sasaki Yoshihide’s performance as Souza Samonji and wanted to draw him immideately. I don’t know if it’s Souza’s melancholy or the huge amount of pink that made me a fan of his but I really love him right now  And I have to say that I don’t really like pink as a colour very much. Also, yes, I was looking at a picture of Sasaki Yoshihide while drawing this Souza, but I think it’s hard to tell that it is him. So I don’t really want to count this as a serious portrait… or I could probably count it as a failed portrait as well It’s probably because I am better at drawing portraits at bigger scales than soooo small. Especially with water colours. At least, it was very very fun to do this :D

“The Bunnies Fall”
Digital, 2006

The autumn image in our “Seasons of the Rabbit” series.  Dan turned falling autumn leaves into bunnies drifting down over a rushing river. Print available in our web shop. Like “Bunny Blossoms” it is not based on a specific ukiyo-e masterpiece, but captures the feel of a genre of landscape in those Japanese woodblock prints.

Bunny Blossom
digital, 2005

The second image in our “Seasons of the Rabbit” series.  This image popped into Dan’s head as a follow up to “Uprisings” once it was apparent that people really liked that image. Unlike “Uprisings” which a very direct homage to a specific work by a specific artist, “Bunny Blossom” was more just evocative of a classic type of Japanese image common in woodblock print, featuring some flowering branches in an interesting composition (often the ukiyo-e masters would include birds on the branches, but Dan decided not do so in this piece). Dan continued the theme of turning one natural element (this time the cherry blossoms) into rabbits.

One thing of note is that this piece was originally made longer for the long sold out archival limited edition print, but in order to make the poster a similar spect ratio to the “Uprisings” poster we cropped the bottom off the image for the poster release (which can be purchased HERE).

A Global Guide to the Best Times for Travel Deals

For many destinations across the globe, the cheapest time to book hotels is in the beginning of the year. Average room rates during the first two weeks of January were below average in all 25 markets the study looked at. But travelers can also find bargains at other times of the year. In March there are deals to be found in Barcelona, London or Oslo. June and July, traditionally popular vacation months, are inexpensive times to book hotels in Dubai, Milan and Vienna. The last week in December, considered high season in most destinations, is a great time to travel to Oslo, Stockholm or Riyadh.

Hotel prices in some places, though, tend to be consistent throughout the year. Budget travelers in Asia will be disappointed to hear that there really is no low season for most of that region’s popular destinations. The cheapest time to travel to Tokyo is the first week of January, but even then hotel rooms are just 17% cheaper than average. Likewise in Taipei and Seoul seasonal hotel deals are limited. The best hotel deals in Taipei are the first week of July but prices then are only 9% cheaper than average; for Seoul the best week is the first week of January but you’ll only score a 10% discount.

Hopefully the handy infographic displays this data visually to help make those big travel plans.
