Josephine & Jazz : Maquette. ca. 1930. Paul Colin.

8 3/8 x 11 in./21.3 x 28 cm

Oh yeah. That’s Josephine Baker dancing on top of a piano while the musicians cluster below, and the Eiffel Tower itself swings in syncopation. Classic Paul Colin, it’s also got a little bit of Chagall in it, n'est ce pas? An absolute treasure of the Jazz Age.

La Plage de Calvi. Corse. 1928. Roger Broders.

31 1/8 x 42 3/8 in./79 x 107.5 cm

A rapturously beautiful, supreme Deco celebration of Corsica, the Mediterranean, and the idylls of beach life from the travel-poster master. The colors are impossibly crisp, especially considering this Grande Dame of posterdom is now 90 years of age. This is actually an advertisement for the PLM railway; the line not only advertised destinations in southern Europe, but also points across the water accessible from those ports. This is the French-language version.

Monseigneur Nectar : Maquette. 1931. Charles Loupot.

46 ¼ x 61 ½ in./117.6 x 156.2 cm

A signed gouache-and-ink maquette for an extremely rare brand: Loupot takes a Cubist spin upon the common trope of “the grand nobleman with his bottle.” Despite his voluminous coats and the beautiful rosé color in the glass, Monseigneur Nectar has vanished from our world.

Cycles Americains. 1894. Emile Clouet.

51 x 72 ½ in./129.5 x 184.2 cm

Brash and bursting, Clouet’s poster for Cycles Americains certainly plays up the cultural characteristics of New Worlders for dramatic effect. The young woman busts through the canvas in her New York bike with a great shout of “Look at me!” And so we do, as it’s impossible to take one’s eyes off the action, which comes at you head-on.

That is not Chewbacca at left. That’s Jo-Jo, the Russian Poodle Man, and this is Barnum & Bailey’s Sideshow arriving in France. This original Strobridge design was translated and printed in Paris (a French tax stamp is at upper left), delivering une piquant je ne sais quoi to Little Peter the Great; John MacDonald, the Human Mastodon; Koguri, the Japanese Artist Without Arms; miniature Queen Mab; and some 30 other prodigies of nature. Magnifique!

Barnum & Bailey / Coney Island. 1898. Anonymous.

27 ¼ x 37 in./69.3 x 94 cm

Beginning in 1880, and continuing until World War II, Coney Island was the single biggest amusement area in the United States. For more than a century it’s been adored for the pure carnival fantasy of it, the mass congregation of its sideshow characters, and an atmosphere of devil-may-care lunacy. This classic poster was used by Barnum & Bailey for their British tour of 1898-1899, and served to enhance the reputation of this freewheeling national treasure in New York City. A visual delight as well as a historic document of great interest, this image was also published in the more common horizontal format. Bottom text reads: “Remarkable head-foremost dives from enormous heights into shallow depths of water, together with thrilling & daring aquatic & sub-aqueous feats of every description.”

The Seasons. 1896. Alphonse Mucha.

Each: 21 1/8 x 40 ¾ in./53.6 x 103.5 cm

This larger format is rare; rarer still is a large version of the 1896 Seasons with such exceedingly fresh colors! You can feel the chill of Winter, the little birds huddling for warmth; the dewy wakefulness of Spring, fashioning herself a lyre, on which those little birds are expectantly perched; Summer is indolent, sleepy in the heat; but Autumn, Autumn, lush and fecund with her auburn hair, indulges the harvest by plucking the grapes from the vine, straight into her cup. It’s not only the passage of time that makes this series rare: these images were difficult to find even at the time of their publication. The editor of The Poster couldn’t help a reader locate this set back in 1899, concluding: “they are getting scarce” (January 1899, p. 42). This is the larger variant with the Seasons text at bottom.

Grand Sport. 1925. A. M. Cassandre.

23 ¾ x 31 ½ in./60.3 x 80 cm

“Clothes make the man.” Cassandre might have been meditating on this old adage while formulating his approach for this Grand Sport poster. The cap, “the champion’s choice” on offer, is detailed with loving realism, every fold and curve supple and tactile. It sits on the head of a Cubist abstraction: one that faces both straight-on and “cocked-to-the-right,” redolent of Oskar Schlemmer and Picasso (Brown & Reinhold, p. 13). As such, it stands with the best works of Cassandre, which find the most elegant and efficient way of communicating two or more (sometimes subversive) ideas in a single image.

*** HEADS UP ALL ***

My sister was recently in a car wreck that totaled out the vehicle, but thankfully it was mostly confined to the front-end and she had her seatbelt on, so injuries were minimal - just some scrapes and whiplash. She doesn’t have medical insurance though, and EMTs decided to ambulance her over to the ER for an x-ray, so there’ll be a bill for that plus getting the car replaced.

I’ll be running an art auction over on Twitter this Friday, 17 September, starting at 6:00 PM CT, to raise money to help with the bills and replacing the car. This is the first time I’ve ever sold physical art, so if you’ve been wanting to snatch a piece, your chance is coming up verysoon. See the link below for details!
