OC Moodboards: The Solis Series

“Martin pushed himself out of the sand, spitting blood. He’d just been hit across the mouth and didn’t like it much. If he bruised, then Mistress Ulet would- Well, that didn’t matter anymore, he was well out of her hands and that was the trouble. The woman who had ruled the pleasure house with an iron fist was no longer his biggest fear.”

(If you haven’t found @redwingedwhump’s Solis series — or any of their writing — yet, then you need to get on it! In fact: you can find the masterlist here.)

This is awesome! thank you so much!!

as a student of history I don’t like Hamilton(the musical)’s representation of real events and the mythologizing of the founding fathers, but I am not immune to “Wait for It”

(I’m also not immune to Daveed Diggs in tight pants but that isn’t relevant here)

No but seriously I hate most “historical fiction” because it can’t help but reinforce biases about the past and re-iterate the stories we tell ourselves about those time periods, however false or misleading

So much of studying history is not only slogging through the biases and blind spots of people that WROTE the primary sources, but slogging through your own biases that make it harder for you to even ask the right questions.

With fiction based on history, so often you’re like “This is a piece of good art when separated from its context, but it’s also dangerously wrong about the thing it’s supposed to represent”

@ivanaskye I’m mostly talking about the framing of the whole thing

like, in the beginning hamilton is portrayed as being a self-made man who “pulled himself up by his bootstraps” and became successful with his brilliance and intellect, and it’s focusing on his disadvantages when he had noticeable privileges (e.g. being able to read and write in an era when it was illegal in places to teach a slave to read).

Hamilton being portrayed as more anti-slavery than he actually was is bad, but it would still be bad even if the musical accurately represented him, because there were lots of people at the time that were WAY more anti-slavery than any of the major founding fathers were, but they’re ignored and Washington and his ilk are thereby made to seem more moderate than they really were

It’s kinda like a “documentary about zebras” vs. “documentary about lions” thing, how does the way this story is being framed affect it

Hey #OFMD fans? Just a little reminder of what your blorbo Stede Bonnet got up to when he wasn’t pirating. That’s right, being a FUCKING SLAVE OWNER and a militia member who hunted escaped slaves. He was likely a rapist, or encouraged the rape of barely pubescent Black girls. They would be beaten, whipped, and otherwise tortured into compliance. They would spend the rest of their lives pregnant while undergoing extreme violence EVERY SINGLE FUCKING DAY.

When he left to become a pirate he made sure the plantation stayed in the hands of his wife and sons in case he wanted to go back.

The show creator knew what he was and didn’t give a shit. I hope the show gets cancelled and all digital media of it pulled from the Internet for all fucking time. I hope it gives you nightmares.

If someone could transcribe these excerpts from bell hook’s Ain’t I A Woman I’d appreciate it, I’m too tired and physically exhausted to do it myself.

Reminder that Stede Bonnet was a whole ass plantation owner with an estimated 94 slaves who participated in hunting down (and no doubt torturing or killing) escaped slaves. And that was BEFORE the piracy. The writer knew this and instead of creating a fictional character, he just ignored it and turned him into a romantic love interest.

And once again white queers are happily dismissing this fact because the show gives them “representation” as if it isn’t just a bunch of straights playing gay for fun and Profit.

obsessedwithwriting:

Remember the episode “The Test”?? Where it turns out that one of the first adventures the gems had together with Steven was actually the test they prepared to see if he was ready to join them?

Okay, the thing is: what if everything that happened in the show was just the test the DIAMONDS made for Pink Diamond? What if Steven gathers them together on a party and convinces them to turn back the corrupted gems and the diamonds burst out in laughter and finally tell him oh, Pink, all of that was just a test, we wanted to see if you can do it?? Then it turns out that Homeworld is actually a place where everyone lives freely and happily and feels comfortable with each other and all that happened was just a huge stage show the diamonds put to prepare Pink Diamond for her own times of rule?

Consider:

  • It would fit right within this huge parallel between Pink Diamond and Steven the crew is making right now
  • Actions of the pearls are a very important indication imo - like if they were really slaves they are painted to be, they would obviously feel more uncomfortable and the relationship between Pink Diamond and our Pearl would be a very uncomfortable inequal slave/master romance - but it would all make sense if Homeworld is actually a place of joy and freedom! Pearl actually never was Pink Diamond’s slave, that’s why she was able to fall in love with her in a healthy way the show portrays it in. That would also explain why Pearl’s comment in the last episode - “Im only here because Im bringing your things and I am one of your things” - is so dismissive and not in any way how a real person who used to be a slave/thing in this place would say it. I would be tired too of having to act for thousands of years like I was ever an unhappy slave, she’s just done by now.
  • The gag order!! Of course love of Pearl’s life wouldn’t put a gag order like that on her, indicating that she actually sees her as nothing more than a thing she can impose orders on however she pleases. It was just a thing Pearl and the Diamonds came up with after Rose chose to be with Greg to explain why Pearl didn’t tell Steven that he was Pink Diamond immediately, they wanted to make the test harder for Steven!
  • The positive portrayal of the Diamonds. We are obviously supposed to identify with them and see them as people and there is zero awareness of the fact that they are also ruthless dictators in the show’s portrayal of them. That’s because they really aren’t - it’s just a part of the test they try to make Steven face. But sometimes it’s very hard to act like this when you were just happily singing with your lover Blue Peal and talking to her about how much you love her and then suddenly you have to act like she is your slave - that’s why Blue Diamond is always so sad. She just wants to be able to tell Pink already about her (equal and nice) marriage with Blue Pearl!

And the most important point: considering all the stupid choices they made so far, I think this is a very plausible theory! Share your thoughts!

Listen, I’m not in the greatest headspace right now, so I’m probably going to miss some points I want to make here, but:

  • “it turns out that Homeworld is actually a place where everyone lives freely and happily“ Homeworld would still be an oligarchy even if everything else were a test for Pink. Dunno how freedom can proliferate under an oligarchy.
  • “Pearl actually never was Pink Diamond’s slave, that’s why she was able to fall in love with her in a healthy way the show portrays it in.” The show literally shows Pearl demanding her destruction when she realises she’s been acting out of line by having a crush on Rose Quartz.
    • There is absolutely nothing healthy about how Pearl fell for Pink/Rose.
  • “… if [the Pearls] were really slaves they are painted to be, they would obviously feel more uncomfortable….” how do you know what the Pearls feel? have you ever heard of emotional labour? the fact that they can generally keep their composure (except when pushed by their Diamonds) doesn’t mean that they’re at all comfortable with their position.
  • “Of course love of Pearl’s life wouldn’t put a gag order like that on her, indicating that she actually sees her as nothing more than a thing she can impose orders on however she pleases.“ Or maybe the dictator put a gag order on her slave.
  • “That’s because [the Diamonds] really aren’t [dictators].” We saw how devastated Jungle Moon was after Yellow’s colonization. she did, in fact, do bad things.
  • The last point with Blue Diamond/Blue Pearl—what? Is that supposed to be funny? Because I’ve got to tell you, it’s not.

In all, this theory is outright offensive on multiple levels.

TWs: captivity, slavery

Mark had agreed to stay home from work the day that their Lady was set to arrive. Delia had barely been able to sleep in the days leading up to it, and he found himself also unable to relax. What was the etiquette for something like this?

Did the house need to be spotless? Or was it okay to leave the dishes from their barely-eaten breakfast undone? Would that make their Lady nervous, or think that they were going to be high maintenance? What if she hated it there, and hated them? His mind buzzed, drowning out even the morning news podcast he’d habitually put on.

“…Proper decorum prevented them from speaking directly and honestly about the hidden evils of slavery. Angelina Grimke wrote:

“  We forbear to lift the veil of private life any higher. Let these few hints suffice to give you some idea of what is daily passing behind the curtain which has been so carefully drawn before the scenes of domestic life in slave holding America.”

Had Angelina and Sarah Grimke lifted the veil of private life any higher they would have exposed not only slaveowners siring children by black women, but sadistic misogynist acts of cruelty and brutality that went far beyond seduction-to rape, to torture, and even to orgiastic murder and necrophilia.
Modern historians tend to make light of the sexual exploitation of Black women during slavery…”

“…Nanny had had three children; two of them are dead. She came to implore that the rule of sending them into the field three weeks after their confinement might be altered.
Leah, Caesar’s wife, had had six children; three are dead.
Sophy, Lewis’s wife, came to beg for some old line. She is suffering fearfully; has had ten children; five of them all dead. The principal favor she asked was a piece of meat, which I gave her.
Sally, Scipio’s wife, has had two miscarriages and three children born, one of whom is dead. She came complaining of incessant pain and weakness in her back. This woman was a mulatto daughter of a slave called Sophy, by a white man of the name Walker who visited the plantation.
Charlotte, Renty’s wife, has had two miscarriages, and was with child again. She was almost crippled with rheumatism, and showed me a pair of poor swollen knees that made my heart ache. I have promised her a pair of flannel trousers, which I must forthwith set about making.
Sarah, Stephen’s wife; this woman’s case and history alike are deplorable. She has had four miscarriages, had brought seven children into the world, five of whom were dead, and was again with child. She complained of dreadful pains in the back, and an internal tumor which swells with exertion of working in the fields; probably I think, it is ruptured… I suppose her constant childbearing and hard labor in the fields at the same time may have produced… temporary insanity…
I ask these questions about their children because I think the number they bear as compared with the number they rear a fair gauge of the effect of the system on their own health and that of their offspring. There was hardly one of these, as you will see by the details I have noted of their ailments, who might not have been a candidate for a bed in a hospital, and they had come to me after working all day in the fields.”

“…The female slave lived in constant awareness of her sexual vulnerability and in perpetual fear that any male, white or Black, might single her out to assault and victimize. Linda Brent in the narrative of her slave experience expressed her awareness of the Black female’s plight:

“Slavery is terrible for men; but it is far more terrible for women. Super-added to the burden common to all, they have wrongs, and suffering, and mortifications peculiarly their own.”

Those sufferings peculiar to Black women were directly related to their sexuality and involved rape and other forms of sexual assault. Black female slaves were usually sexually assaulted when they were between the ages of thirteen and sixteen. One female slave autobiographer declared:

“The slave girl is reared in an atmosphere of licentiousness and fear. The lash and the foul talk of her masters and his sons are her teachers. When she is fourteen or fifteen, her owner or his sons, or the overseer, or perhaps all of them, begin to bribe her with presents. If these failed to accomplish their purpose, she is whipped or starved into submission to their will.”

This idea has been stuck in my head for a while and wouldn’t let me off until I do something about it.

I wonder if those who look at the wordless comic strip would understand what I was trying to convey…

In a dystopian where corruption is common, Kuroko was sold to the auction house as a slave by his parents at a very young age.
He was often tortured, abused, starved and made to do harsh physical labors.
One day, he saw a child and his parent interact with each other, and he was filled with longing for someone who would care for him, but believed that it would never be possible.
When he saw the child throwing away a half-eaten food, he immediately went to dig it out from the trash bin. However, he was caught by his masters for doing so and thus, was punished.
His masters then left him in the abandoned basement of their mansion with little food and water.

Akashi was maybe a prince or official-in-training sent to this rural town to deal with the corruption by his father as part of his training.
As he was reading the notes about the town, he realised that slavery is a practice in the town and he immediately called for people to arrest those who took part in illegal human trafficking.
He freed all the slaves in the mansion and gave them a huge sum of money to help them build a new life(so huge they could live comfortably for the rest of their lives). One of the older slaves then informed Akashi that there was still another slave, the youngest, who was bought when he was still a toddler, and that he knew nothing about a normal life. She then inform him that the kid is being locked up somewhere, as they haven’t seen him around for weeks.

Akashi immediately turned back into the mansion to look for that last slave. In the master’s bedroom, he found a dilapidated metal door cleverly hidden and picked the lock open. He head down the flight of stairs and open another door to find a young teenager staring back at him. As Akashi tried to approach the boy, the boy scurried and cowered away from him, up until he was cornered.
The boy then went into a defensive position, curling up his body and covering his head while he whimpered in fear for the impending pain.

He was shocked, however, when instead of feeling pain, he was embraced gently. Looking up at the redhead, said redhead smiled kindly and told him, “You don’t have to be anyone’s slave anymore. You are free now.”.

Kuroko was so shocked to hear that that he cried, and Akashi simply held him as he calmed down.

After that, Akashi decides to bring Kuroko to his mansion and teach him about the normal life. Kuroko was, however, wary and terrified of everyone except Akashi, and he often still behaves like a slave. Though, over time, that changed, and Kuroko now acts like a normal person, except with recurring nightmares about his abuse.

Overtime, as Akashi showed Kuroko the ways of being a normal human(he refuse to send Kuroko back to his family after finding out from some old agreement papers that he was sold by his family), he slowly fell in love with Kuroko, finding him to be sweet and endearing. However, he is hesitant to act on it as he is worried that Kuroko would reciprocate his emotion out of gratitude and obligation.

When Kuroko realised that he too, loves Akashi, he then had to deal with his insecurities as a former slave and showing Akashi that his love is real and not out of obligations.

I am a horrible writer, drawing is the best I can do. Hope this would appease my mind.

Im in love

This is a crossover fanfic between my boy Galo and @whumping-every-day ’s character Mutt (and Trev, sort of)

Galo wasn’t entirely sure of the series of events that had led him here. Auntie Maggie’s step-son from her first marriage had a friend who had a slave and the friend and his sister had gotten pulled away on an emergency and needed someone to watch after the slave while they were gone, and their usual dog sitter wasn’t “emotionally suitable.”

Galo’s cousin (was that the right word? They only barely counted as relatives) had moved away but had given the friend, Trev, Galo’s phone number and, admittedly, he was only a few hours’ drive away. Nyla could take care of them all for an evening, but the other guy, “Mutt,” was not so stable as all that, and Galo liked long car rides.

He liked having someone to commiserate with, too, for all that Trev and he seemed to operate on fundamentally different wavelengths. Someone who got the “holy shit walking on eggshells” thing. Also the “ah, I have a surprisingly evil dead relative” thing. Being that Trev was from across state lines, and that his state apparently had different safety constraints and standards of living for slaves, Trev had it worse than Galo. Sorry for that guy.

Well sorry for Mutt first and foremost. Absolutely sorry for Mutt FIRST and foremost.
