queen-mayhem:

I wore a t-shirt and some wide-legged pants today. This is a totally normal outfit formula for me. I’ve worn minor variations on this outfit several times a week for three months. I get occasional compliments on it, especially if I’m wearing a particularly cute top.

Today, I received six compliments on it in three hours. Many quite effuse and gushing.

What’s the difference?

I wore makeup today. I was expecting to be photographed, which is basically the only situation in which I will wear makeup. It wasn’t a lot of makeup. A little concealer, a little eyeliner and mascara, a little blush. It’s barely noticeable that I’m even wearing makeup.

But it was enough.

When we say wearing makeup isn’t a choice you make “for yourself,” it’s conditioned into you via social approval/disapproval, this is what we mean. Nobody complimented my makeup, they complimented my outfit. If I didn’t already know how this works, I might never have made the connection. But that’s how this works. It’s insidious. “I just feel more confident when I wear makeup!” No, other people reward you in subtle ways when you wear makeup.

And I don’t blame the people who commented. It’s not like they’re all in on some conspiracy to make me wear makeup more often. They just noticed that I looked unusually “nice,” and wanted to say something nice about it. They probably didn’t even notice that the makeup was what was different.

But the message was loud and clear - people like my appearance more when I wear makeup. People are nicer to me when I wear makeup. People go out of their way to say nice things to me when I wear makeup.

Nobody is immune to that. I certainly am not immune to that.

earth day fashion revolution values

I realized recently that my fashion schooling was punctuated by several significant events– disasters, really– that mark the intersections of my values system as a citizen of the world and as a fashion designer. They were landmarks on the map that lead to me to build Manuma.

Using technology for social good!  I love this!  It is a special advertisement that shows a different message to adults and to children.  They do this by putting two images over each other so that people of different heights can see different images.  Only people below the average height of a ten year old can see the message saying “if somebody hurts you- call us.” Those who are taller (adults) only see a message that says “sometimes abuse is only visible to the one who suffers”.   It is a really cool idea- and I think a mainly effective one.  It is good to get the number of these helplines out to children who need them- and I hope that many young individuals will be aided by this fascinating (though simple) innovation in combining technology with social good!

If you could stop or prevent #bullying and harassment on a #socialnetwork, would you?

Back then, there was not much #technologyor#laws to stop it.

Would I remove #bullying from #socialmedia?

Yes, I would. With the right policies, CMS (need to fix (: ) and also trying with other platforms as well.

Obviously. Why else create Motivator Network waaaay back when, then leaving it? *social experiments*

We will support and protect women online at Worldie. Basically, anything you see from the other social networks today (all that discrimination) wouldn’t happen here.

I understand it’s a balance, but we are egalitarian, not utilitarian. Each person matters. We also want to rescue people if needed. All of that distress, going no where? We will create a better world. It’s the social cause.

#Women #Discrimination #Causes: We’re #egalitarian at Worldie. We will be the BEST #nonprofit out there and the FIRST #socialmedia all-in-one. All #SocialStatuses. - #Founders

Also, I deleted the criticism I had when I was hired AT a S.M. back in Nov. Honestly, it’s better to be positive anyhow, but I will show you again the HUNDREDS of screenshots on Worldie’s Pinterest :)… I still have the Google folder, guys!

Also, I am totally cray cray wild GOOD!

I defend Amber Heard online “Oops I did it again,” irritate Hollywood even though I hardly know anyone and they’re Boomers - it’s a totally different crowd now and worse lol over the past 30 years (NDAs started in the 90s and there’s no safety, openness. E.g., venues). Also, pretty sure I got Nicole Arbour (She retweeted EPVP!!) verified indirectly on Twitter by complaining about “Fake Hot Girl” (that’s right, it never grew up from Hot or Not, except now they’re playing around with LIVES…)

I’m completely stoked about Victoria Project and strategic partnerships for that. I bought shares to donate to 2 organizations, and I may be able to oversee it, but I’m also cray cray WILD, so it can be hard to deal with I guess? But I’m wildly good for a reason and maybe it can be learned from ;)… It was paused back in 2019 for reasons… I really hope it continues. Literally EVERYONE WANTS UPDATED RESCUE AND EMERGENCY SYSTEMS (Technology)! Seriously! Even though we all have to self-fund it seems…

Change the World… Forget 1 in 1 million, I am 1 in 5-10 million…

Worldie’s female developer (#WomenWhoCode) is the best ever. I’m so happy, even an application is in reach this year possibly.  I joke that we’re like the United Nations of Social Media, except we’re of all social statuses, so that’s different (UN is a bit selective and blocked off from victims, e.g.)… I literally think we’re unstoppable pretty soon… Then, I am starting an MBA program to “Swim” more.

Worldie.com: The #history of our platform involves a few #projects at once starting 2016 onward.

#Motivator #Network/Hero Motivators was a project to try to motivate people to think more #altruistically and #help people directly, and to be stronger.

We stopped posting on it, but 1,149,517 views are on our youtube. The founder of #Worldie also created Everyday Psych #Victims Project and Motivationology.

These 3 projects along with Worldie give us a huge understanding about Social Impact and effects. It also makes us extremely different from other #founders of other platforms.

We genuinely care about you as a #human!

Q&A with TO THE MARKET

TO THE MARKET is a USA based company empowering women around the world through artisan enterprise and have been featured by The New York Times, Forbes, Glamour, Elle and People StyleWatch to name a few!! Find out more in our inspiring Q&A with Founder, Kristin Franco.

1. What inspired you to found TO THE MARKET?

Before founding TO THE MARKET, I worked on counter terrorism for the US State Department and human trafficking for Mrs. Cindy McCain at the McCain Institute. My work exposed me to marginalized populations across the world where women had little control over their day to day lives. These experiences showed me the importance of economic empowerment and economic independence. When I look at the growing demand for social impact products (demand!) and the incredible skillset of vulnerable communities to produce beautiful products (supply!), I knew that the market forces aligned.

2. How did you first become interested in ethical fashion?

I became interested in ethical fashion when I looked into different industries that could serve as a pathway for economic empowerment of women. Artisan enterprise is the second largest economy in the developing world and provides women with flexibility and a sustained form of income!

3. You started the company supporting a handful of artisan co-operatives and have grown to support tens of artisan groups, which is an amazing achievement. Tell us a little about the positive impact.

TO THE MARKET partners with existing artisan cooperatives to sustain and grow their businesses, helping vulnerable women artisans become economically empowered through the dignity of work. We accomplish this by providing multiple channels for product distribution, serving as a platform for survivors to share their stories and supporting our local partners by providing trend forecasting and basic mental health resources. As our reach grows we are able to equip a growing number of artisans with economic independence and raise awareness for the challenges they face.

4. What is your best selling item and which products are your favourites?

5. Do you have any advice for other socially conscious businesses who want to create a positive impact?

YES! Start now! I frequently hear that people feel like they have to wait to be successful (i.e. profitable or a big business or have a ton of followers) before they incorporate some form of social impact into their work. I say start now and make it a core business value. Your growth and success will be expedited because people put a premium on social impact!

Whether you’re B2C or B2B, your 2014 marketing strategy definitely needs to include social media.  I think everyone knows this, but there are so many networks out there - how do you know which ones to use?  This chart from CMO.com brilliantly breaks down the top social networks and how they can benefit your brand:

This guide lists 4 major benefits: SEO, Brand Awareness, Customer Communication, & Traffic Generation.  At the beginning of the year, Google changed its author ranking to give more value to social media posts.  If there is only one reason you should be using social media for business, it’s for SEO.  The more likes, shares and comments on a post, the more Google recognizes it as valuable content.  Instagram is the exception, because it’s a mobile app and its posts don’t appear in search results.  However, Instragram is great for the second category: Brand Awareness.

Whether you have 1 million or 100 followers, people are going to see you on their social networks one way or another.  There are hundreds of reports out there that prove there are billions of people using social media daily!  Get your name out there and start engaging.

Engaging on social networks leads to Customer Communication.  Traditional marketing techniques involves shouting our message to our customers, then the conversation ends.  They can’t respond.  Social media makes direct feedback possible.  Listen to what your customers are saying, help them with problems, give great customer service, reward them for their loyalty, and connect with them on a personal level.

Now that you’re in search results, people recognize your brand, and you have built relationships with your community, it’s time to get click-throughs.  The best networks for clicks are Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.  Know what networks work best for Traffic Generation, and start sharing links!  But don’t limit your efforts.  Get creative!  And happy networking :)

Get LOUDR @ Tumblr

On December 1st, we announced our in-kind ad donation program, LOUDR. With the launch of this program, Tumblr will be donating 10% of our top ad inventory units to advocacy organizations. LOUDR is an alliance dedicated to amplifying marginalized voices. The program will be primarily dedicated to supporting BIPOC-led and -focused organizations. We will also leverage this program to support Tumblr’s long-standing social justice priorities of racial justice, mental health, and equity.

How did the name “LOUDR” come about?

The focus of this program is AMPLIFICATION — to amplify is to “make louder,” or in this case, LOUDR.

Who is eligible?

Organizations that:

  • serve/support BIPOC communities
  • are BIPOC led
  • align with Tumblr’s focus areas of racial injustice, mental health or LGBTQIA+ equity and causes.

So how does an organization apply?

Simply apply here or email us at [email protected] with the following information:

  • Your organization’s name, mission, and website
