You’ve been sucked in by The Hunger Games, Divergent and The Maze Runner, but what about the classics? These weren’t the first books to delve into the “what ifs” of dystopia. If you’re digging these societies (at least, when they’re fictional), you should check out these books.

• Fahrenheit 451. In this book, books are not allowed. If any are found, they are burned. But what happens when you find a book and you don’t have it burned? It’s an interesting take on how society views books, and the power that they can bring you.

• Brave New World. Everyone is kept happy by a society that gives them - but are they really happy? They are molded into caste-like systems and raised to do jobs. There is no competitiveness, but there is also no real freedom.

• A Clockwork Orange. A teen talks about his violent adventures and his experience being “reformed” by the state; in the process, however, they take away his free will. He is then forced to face the effects of his decisions. The book questions the cost of actions.

• The Giver. This utopia turns out to really be a dystopia, as you learn that pain has been substituted for sameness, which keeps people from feeling true emotions. It makes you question where the line is drawn to protect people.

• Atlas Shrugged. Major industrialists have abandoned their industries due to new regulations, and they then begin to fail. It asks, “What is the role of man’s mind in existence?” With a focus on objectivism and capitalism, you’ll really think on this one.

There are others out there, such as 1984 and Battle Royale, so you’ve got a lot to satiate your appetite for a dismal future.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Before The Avengers, Joss Whedon brought to life one of the strongest female characters in tv history. Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) lives in Sunnydale California, student by day vampire slayer by night. It may sound like a cliche story line but I do promise laughs especially at the have ridiculous 90’s clothing but the writing is solid. Emotional, realistic, and witty. The characters each go through major transformations throughout the series and the bad guys are as scary as they are symbolic. Alyson Hannigan from How I Met Your Mother plays Buffy’s best friend Willow who dabbles with magic! Buffy is on Netflix and October is a perfect time to start binging on this 90s treasure.

The Following - Kevin Bacon delivers an amazing performance in this terrifying story of an Edgar Allen Poe obsessed serial killer who is fascinated with Bacon’s character. I was surprised this show was so enticing, considering the finale of season 1 left me staring at my television with confusion. To be honest, this show was made for people with strong stomachs, there is no holding back when it comes to blood, gore, and the fate of adorable puppies. If you’re an Edgar Allen Poe fan I strongly suggest giving The Following a shot, there are many references. Season 3 comes back in January on FOX!

Veronica Mars - Another strong female character, Veronica is a high-school student who is savvy, resilient, and determined. Her dad, Keith Mars was the local sheriff until Veronica’s best friend Lilly (Amanda Seyfried) was found murdered - and Keith believed Lily’s father to be the killer. Keith becomes a private eye and Veronica, who appears to be just his secretary, picks up some skills and takes on solving Lily’s murder. Set in Neptune, California V. Mars fans (known as “marshmallows”) have come to love this mystery show so much that kick-starter fund was created to help produce a Veronica Mars movie! If you like mystery/thrillers, romance, puns, and California surfer boys, Veronica Mars is for you and also available on Netflix.

It may seem like Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and the rest of the holiday season are ages away, but these next few weeks are sure to go by quick. You don’t want to be caught off guard because school and work kept you busy up until the last minute. Take the opportunity to start planning now; that way, you’ll have nothing to worry about when the big days actually come.

• Make your gift list. Who do you want to get presents? What’s your budget? Are they group gifts? This is the time to figure all this out so you can start purchasing items as you see them. There’s no worse feeling than not having something to give to someone that you’d planned on getting a gift. Avoid that embarrassment by working on your list now and crossing it off, slowly but surely.

• Figure out your schedule. Will you need days off? What about half days? Should you be scheduling appointments? The holidays are a time where you generally have some time away from work and school, but you may have to take that time off. They’re also an excellent opportunity to schedule doctor and dentist appointments - taking these days off now means people are less likely to have already done so.

• Clean out your closet. What have you accumulated in the past year that you really aren’t using? This is the time to clean out your closet and donate things you don’t need. That way, you’ve got space for the new goodies you’re sure to acquire, but you also make your old belongings available to people who may see them as the best gift they could give. Talk about win-win!

As students, we often struggle with the dilemma of going out. Yes, the food is much better than we could ever cook on our own, but it’s also much more expensive. Fortunately, there are restaurants out there that will keep your tummy and your wallet happy - here are just a few of them!

•  Steak ‘N Shake. With at least 17 meal options for under $4, you’ve got plenty to choose from that won’t break the bank. Also, they’re always putting out sheets of coupons that you can snag from an email or the newspaper, so you can make these great deals even better.

• IHOP. These pancake people have several cheaper options to provide you with all your breakfast-y needs. Not only that, but they also offer a student discount, so long as you show them your ID. This saves you an extra 10% off your bill, making your meal that much tastier.

• Dairy Queen. You may have some trouble finding these nowadays, but if you do, you’re in for a thrifty treat. They have a $5 lunch menu where you can choose from a chicken wrap, chicken tenders, a chili cheese dog or a burger. These come with fries, a drink and your choice of dessert!

Be sure to check what sort of deals your local restaurants offer as well - you never know what kind of bargains you might find!

Since the Simpsons met Family Guy last night, no one has been able to talk about anything else. But it’s not like this is earth-shattering stuff - the cartoon crossover has been happening for decades. Just remember some of these classics (well, classics for us).

• Hercules meets Aladdin. Hades didn’t have a chance against Aladdin, sending only Pain and Panic, while Jafar couldn’t hold a candle to Hercules. These two may have thought they could pit these heroes against one another, but good always triumphs over evil.

• Transformers meet G.I. Joe. Cobra found the buried Ark with the Transformers inside, turning them into war machines. Fortunately, they’re able to break free of his control, but that’s when things really get crazy. This crossover happened a few times.

• Lilo and Stitch meet Kim Possible. Stitch is kidnapped by Dr. Drakken, so Pleakley gets Kim Possible to help rescue him. She and Lilo both want the other to get out of the way, while Jumba thinks Rufus is a dangerous experiment that escaped.

• Rugrats meet The Wild Thornberrys. Who knew Tommy was so crazy about Nigel Thornberry? Or that Angelica and Debbie would hit it off so well? These families all work together to save the day, but we know that it’s always the kids who earn most of the credit.

• Futurama meets Adventure Time. This crossover didn’t get too much coverage considering everything else, so you may not have heard about it. Bender meets Jake and Finn in 3013, in Mom’s flying castle, where Mom conducts genetic experiments.

This is no ordinary man being eaten by an ordinary snake (as if that could ever be ordinary). Here’s the low down on what you need to know about this “dangerous game” in the jungle:

• The dude is Paul Rosolie. He is a snake researcher and conservationist who has dedicated his career to studying snakes, particularly the giant green anaconda. This summer, he went into the Amazonian jungle to track down one of these creatures and be “eaten alive” – hence the title of the Discovery Channel special.

• The giant green anaconda is the world’s largest and most powerful snake, as well as the top predator in the Amazon. Anacondas can open their mouths to almost 180 degrees, with jaws attached by elastic ligaments, so it is actually possible for them to swallow a person; right after they crush their bones, of course.

• Paul found the snake. He tracked down a 20ft-long green anaconda, and then donned a suit of specially manufactured armor covered in pigs’ blood so that the snake would be attracted to him. He then crawled on all fours toward the snake, willing her to attack him so that he might journey through her intestines.

• He didn’t actually get eaten. Despite the title of the show, Paul only got part of his head into the snake’s mouth before feeling his arm break under the snake’s coil and shouting to his team to rescue him. So the world continues to not know what it’s like to travel through the inside of a giant green anaconda.

It’s probably better that way.

It seems that these ladies are always in the news for something or another. If you’re having trouble keeping them straight, here’s what you need to know about the infamous sisters.

1. Kim. A friendship with Paris Hilton and a sex tape brought this girl into the limelight. She’s known for starring in her family’s many reality television shows, having a 72 day long marriage and, most recently, breaking the Internet.

2.  Kourtney. With her mother, she opened up children’s boutiques in Los Angeles and New York City. She also guest starred on ABC’s One Life to Live – her performance as Kassandra Kavanaugh was not met positively.

3. Khloe. While she has many shared ventures with the aforementioned sisters, Khloe has also starred in a PETA campaign. As well, she and her husband have released a perfume (Unbreakable) and she has her own radio show.

4. Kendall. This young woman has been modeling since she was 14, but she hopes to break into the acting scene. She is known for the clothing line she works on with her sister, as well as for dating Harry Styles (of One Direction).

5. Kylie. A model and a novelist, this sister is known for hosting all sorts of big name events with Kendall. She also gained media attention for dating Jaden Smith, as well as some Instagram pictures of possible surgery.

It’s official: Matt Damon has said he’ll be a part of the Bourne series again in 2016. These action/thriller films are based on a series of novels by Robert Ludlum, and then Eric Van Lustbader after Robert’s death. In anticipation for the new movie, The Bourne Betrayal, here’s what you need to know about the first four movies.

1. The Bourne Identity. A man is floating in the Mediterranean Sea with gunshot wounds and the number of a Swiss safety deposit box. When he lands on shore, he finds a passport and other papers, money and a gun for Jason Bourne. He tries to figure out his identity while avoiding CIA assassination attempts. Jason realizes that he is an assassin who failed his latest mission. He meets up with Marie, who helps him remember and break his connections with the CIA.

2. The Bourne Supremacy. Years later, Jason is framed for a crime related to his past work. In attempts to kill him, Marie dies. He strives to hunt her killers and his past. He finds out Ward, one of the men involved with the assassin training program, stole millions from the CIA; he was trying to blame Jason. Jason then exposes Ward to Pamela, the CIA officer in charge of finding Jason. The agent who killed Marie dies, so Jason goes into hiding.

3. The Bourne Ultimatum. While hiding, Jason learns a journalist is investigating him, so he contacts him for his source. He is then targeted by a the leader, Noah Vosen, of a new assassin training program. Jason steals classified documents proving Noah has targeted U.S. citizens; he has the help of Pamela and a former tech, Nicky Parsons (who may have liked him before the amnesia). He exposes the assassin training program leaders and goes underground.

4. The Bourne Legacy. Aaron Cross is part of a program which enhances abilities through pills referred to as “chems.” Aaron is sent to Alaska to find an exiled operative. With the FBI researching those involved in the assassin training programs, Eric Byer decides to kill Aaron’s team. Aaron narrowly escapes and seeks more chems from Dr. Shearing. She has no pills, so the two travel to a factory so he doesn’t “viral out.” They avoid being killed and escape.

It seems that Ebola is all over the news lately, and it can be super scary. You don’t even know what it is, let alone how to get it and what it can do to you. That’s why we wanted to share what we know with you; that way, you can stay more informed and maybe a little less freaked out by the unknown.

What is Ebola? It’s an infectious disease that typically causes death. With it, people with the disease often have fevers and extreme internal bleeding.

How does Ebola spread? It can be transferred through contact with infected bodily fluids - blood, saliva, etc. - by a “filovirus” (the Ebola virus). It is not airborne. We do not know its host species yet.

What are the symptoms of Ebola? The symptoms include high fevers and bleeding, as we mentioned. However, they also include headaches, stomach pains, sore throats and lack of appetite.

How do you cure Ebola? Right now, there is no known cure. However, it is possible for victims to be treated and recover if they are offered intensive care.

However, the cases of Ebola in the United States are few and far between. If you are sure to keep clean by washing your hands and wiping counters down, you will typically be just fine. We recommend carrying around a personal container of hand sanitizer, if that helps you feel more at ease.
