You lose touch, you lose people. There’s no other way to put it. Friends are never permanent. Over time they replace you with new ones and you do the same until one fine day, you see them walking down the street but it’s been too long, so you turn the other way.

The urge to make up unrealistic romantic scenarios

Actress Sally Field won an Oscar for her portrayal of this textile factory worker who spun her belief in workers’ rights into forming a union…much to the chagrin of her higher-ups. Norma Rae was based on a real person–union organizer Crystal Lee Sutton, who agitated for better working conditions for her fellow workers at the J.P. Stevens textile plant in North Carolina during the 1970s. Sutton’s fictional counterpart introduced the worker’s rights cause to moviegoing audiences across the United States, and “Norma Rae” remains a classic underdog story interwoven with a timeless social message.

Tell your friend she’s got a little Norma Rae in her. Reblog now to give her a little push.

You’ve been sucked in by The Hunger Games, Divergent and The Maze Runner, but what about the classics? These weren’t the first books to delve into the “what ifs” of dystopia. If you’re digging these societies (at least, when they’re fictional), you should check out these books.

• Fahrenheit 451. In this book, books are not allowed. If any are found, they are burned. But what happens when you find a book and you don’t have it burned? It’s an interesting take on how society views books, and the power that they can bring you.

• Brave New World. Everyone is kept happy by a society that gives them - but are they really happy? They are molded into caste-like systems and raised to do jobs. There is no competitiveness, but there is also no real freedom.

• A Clockwork Orange. A teen talks about his violent adventures and his experience being “reformed” by the state; in the process, however, they take away his free will. He is then forced to face the effects of his decisions. The book questions the cost of actions.

• The Giver. This utopia turns out to really be a dystopia, as you learn that pain has been substituted for sameness, which keeps people from feeling true emotions. It makes you question where the line is drawn to protect people.

• Atlas Shrugged. Major industrialists have abandoned their industries due to new regulations, and they then begin to fail. It asks, “What is the role of man’s mind in existence?” With a focus on objectivism and capitalism, you’ll really think on this one.

There are others out there, such as 1984 and Battle Royale, so you’ve got a lot to satiate your appetite for a dismal future.

hey, so… I need help

I wrote a short story for a competition. it’s the first time I’ve openly shared original stories (something other than fanfic) and when I shared it… it bombed. it was super scary and vulnerable to post it and when almost nobody saw it, it kinda broke my heart.

so, tumblr, who values young writers who just want to fucking go somewhere in life with their dreams can you help me out and read it? Or share it? it would mean literally everything to me. My friends don’t really wanna share it (or read it but whatever) but I worked so hard on it.

please?

It’s called Skyfall. It’s not very long. but I’m proud of it and I don’t wanna give up on it. Thank you

i just took a dna test turns out i’m a 100% crying over fictional characters

lovelybluepanda:

Motivation tip

If you don’t like to choose characters as inspiration, choose an aesthetic. This gives you somehow more freedom with how you do things and it might reduce anxiety if you feel guilty that you can’t be like your favorite character.

Some examples:

  • Wanna study? Try thinking you’re a Ravenclaw. What would Ravenclaws do? (Or choose your own house, all houses have their own way of studying that fits them)
  • Wanna eat healthier? Think you’re a witch who lives in a cottage in a magical forest. Or an elf. Or any aesthetic to like.
  • Wanna buy/cook healthier stuff? Anime grocery/cooking aesthetic

Listen While Reading: Life is a Song // Patrick Park

It was cloudy that morning. I was walking the halls of a beautiful museum I had found when I moved to the city. A man was following me. He had dark hair and he was pretty tall – well, taller than me. I fixed my hair a bit and messed with my sweater, and I tried to tell myself that he wasn’t following me. One day off from work, one nice morning at the museum, it was all I wanted. Of course, this was happening.

“Excuse me?” Was I supposed to play nice to my stalker? I turned to him, realizing his eyes were a calm green and not to mention, he looked pretty caught off guard. “You either have great taste in art or you’re following me around.” I added a soft laugh, realizing I just put myself into a situation I never wanted to be part of.

“Is there an option to choose both?” I didn’t expect him to answer so confident, so sure of himself.

“Why are you following me?” We were the only two standing in that large, marble room, only a few pieces of art to witness our conversation.

“Honestly?”

“Honestly.”

“I, um,” He pressed his lips together; “I kind of wanted to tell you I think you’re really pretty.” He hastily found my eyes again and I felt my cheeks become hot. I needed to pinch myself.

“Oh, oh my gosh, I’m so sorry,” I smiled, “I thought you were following me. I’m sorry.”

“I apologize. This city is already a scary place as it is. I was just trying to build up the courage to talk to you, you see, but I obviously kind of messed up already. I don’t know how much worse I could have done.”

“You could have been a legitimate stalker.”

“There’s that,” we shared a gentle laugh and met eyes for probably the longest moment in my life. It felt like forever and forever was suddenly very beautiful.

“What’s your name?” I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. I wondered how his life was and what his dreams were. Then again, those were my usual thoughts on most people who passed me by on the street.

“Carson. And yours?” His eyes were perfect, his hair looked perfect, and he was wearing a super cool sweater. My heart started to flutter against my chest as I tucked my hair carefully behind my ears.

“Ella.”

“Look, I was going to say some stupid pickup line when I was brave enough to talk to you. But, do you want to just go hang out and look at some Monet’s together?”

“Hey, come on. Now you have to tell me the pickup line, that’s not fair.”

“Okay, okay.  I was going to tell you that you’re so beautiful, you would even make an impression on Monet.” We broke out laughing, echoing the entire room, which was much too large in my opinion to hold just a couple of paintings. I believe that’s when I first started to have genuine, drawings-of-hearts-in-my-journal, I-can’t-wait-to-see-you-again, disgustingly-sappy, feelings for him.

“I have to say, that’s a pretty intelligent pickup line. The most brilliant one I’ve heard so far. No guy I’ve ever known has any idea what impressionism is.”

“You can say art is my thing. Want to take me up on my Monet offer?”

“Of course, Carson!” I remember spending all day there, breathing in the aroma of old art canvases and talking about the intricate details in the paintings most people wouldn’t understand. But, he understood the art kid inside of me pretty well.
