Spooky science

This ghoulish image shows lung tissue structure.

Laura Sibley who took this image is part of a team from Royal Holloway, who are developing novel vaccines using bacteria (similar to ones that are used in probiotic drinks).

The vaccines they are creating are cheaper than normal vaccines, easier to produce and have no chemicals in them, making them suitable for diseases affecting developing countries. There are many diseases that need vaccine development, including tuberculosis, which kills around two million people per year, and is one of the diseases that they are focused on.

Laura stumbled across the ghostly vision in a study looking at TB vaccine distributed in lung tissue, work which in the future could help to protect people against TB infection.

Pandas and parasites

Giant pandas, the international symbol of conservation, are one of the most loved species in the world.

A group of parasitic round worms are one of the main causes of mortality of giant pandas in the wild, and collectively infect more than 50 animal species worldwide.

Infection can damage the intestines and if the infection reaches the brain and eyes: will often result in death.

Dr Russ Morphew at Aberystwyth University, along with researchers at IBERS and Mr Iain Valentine RZSS Edinburgh Zoo look to identify how this deadly parasite responds to anti-parasitic drugs. More specifically, whether drug resistance is the cause of repeat infections in captive giant panda populations.

They hope that their findings will not only help to inform conservation strategies in captivity and across China’s giant panda reserves, but also that they could lead to improved control strategies to deal with infection in the future.

Plague Is Found in New Mexico. Again.

by Liam Stack /NY Times

The New Mexico Department of Health said this week that two women were found to have plague, bringing the total number of people this year in the state known to have the disease to three.

All three patients, a 63-year-old man and two women, ages 52 and 62, were treated at hospitals in the Santa Fe area and released after a few days, said Paul Rhien, a health department spokesman.

Health officials in New Mexico have more experience with plague than many might expect: Every year for the last few years, a handful of people in New Mexico have come down with plague. One person has died.

While the word “plague” may conjure images of medieval cities laid to waste by the Black Death, the disease is still a part of the modern world. It is much less common than it once was, but it is no less serious.

Prompt:  I Don’t Feel So Well…, Hypothermia, Infection

@whumptober2020

Veterinary Update:

Luna had to visit the vet again today, for the third time this week. This time, we think we figured out the problem!

She developed an abscess on her back left leg. It’s likely that this was the source of her infection, which caused her fever the first time, and her fever again today. Over the last 24 hours, she has barely put any pressure on that leg, and it’s causing her pain and discomfort. She was dehydrated again, so the vets gave her more fluids, more antibiotics, and some pain medication. She is still eating, drinking water, and using the litter, but she’s very lethargic.

Unfortunately, we think that Juni may have brought bacteria with her from the shelter. The kitten is healthy and happy, but Luna will need a week or two to recover.

I’m glad we are getting her help. This has been a very stressful week. Thank you all for your continuing support and affection.

This is a tough time for many people. At the moment in my country there are
7918 confirmed infections and 314 deaths.

Remember to always make your health a priority.

I want to share with you some less waste tips that may help you these days.

  • Let’s start with masks - they are not difficult to sew at home (or even make without sewing!) and it is obvious that having a reusable one is better than using lots of disposable ones. After use you can disinfect it with boiling water or just put it into laundry ;) I recommend you having a few face masks.
  • Hand sanitizer - the world went crazy about it. Try making it yourself, it is easy! Ingredients:
  1. 12 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol
  2. 5 tablespoons of aloe vera and 3 tablespoons of glycerin which will prevent your skin from drying out and provide extra protection
  3. You can also add some drops of essential oil;)
  • Most of people started to care about cleaning much more due to the pandemic. Using homemade cleaning products is a goal that I still have not achieved yet. If you feel ready to start using them, go for it, look for the recipes (for example on pinterest) and make your own natural cleaning supplies!
  • I know that gloves are required to be worn now, but to be honest I do not believe that using disposable gloves will save us and from my point of view we are just making a huge waste with this plastic or rubber accessories. But…
  • please, wash your hands after touching any questionable surface. It is crucial to keep you and others save.
  • If you are storing food, remember that using aluminium or metal cans is probably a better choice than choosing plastic or glass due to recycling. Of course you can reuse most of packaging. But again, make yourself comfortable and buy what you need to survive.
  • Buy fruit and vegetables that stay fresh for a long time as: apples, potatoes and sweet potatoes, onions, garlic, apples, carrots, celery, lemons, beetroots, cabbages, brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower. You can also freeze fruits, I often freeze my bananas ;)
  • Grow your own food and make your own bread, cookies, muesli, pasta etc. ;)

I hope you’re doing great and have everything you need. I wish you good heath! Greetings!

Whump prompts: infected wounds edition

Normally the chance of me seeing an ask in a timely fashion is slim-to-none but I did catch this anon request for an infected wounds edition of whump prompts, so here we are.

- a rookie assumes that wounds always hurt this much and his idols are just way tougher than he is, so he tries to be brave but it really sucks that he’s coming down with a virus as well because he feels awful, and… oh.

- injured and lost/abandoned/alone, he has just enough water to either stay hydrated, or to wash out the dirt from his cuts

- the team medic is either occupied saving someone’s life, or badly hurt and out of commission, so he keeps his mouth shut about his own injuries and tries to take care of them as best he can

- it’s not that serious of an injury so his team can’t understand why he’s so agitated about it but it just feels *wrong* right from the beginning and even he can’t tell whether it’s his anxiety/distress causing his heart to race, or something else

- he absolutely completely meant to get that cut properly seen to but other things kept getting pushed to the top of his priority list (like not being killed, etc) and now it’s suddenly and urgently something he needs to deal with *now*

- he technically has antibiotics in his medkit, but someone else needs them more, and he’s done a pretty good job of wound care, so he’ll be fine…

- getting hurt and realising that in his current situation, there’s no way to escape infection. He just needs to make it through the next two days and he can get medical attention, but in the meantime he just needs to soldier on, feeling the fever rising and his strength fading

- a teammate, eyes glassy, skin slick with sweat, hunched protectively over his arm/ribs/etc, unable to stop the cry of pain when he’s jostled

- a hand to the forehead and the shocked exclamation of “he’s burning up!”

- the nausea and the bone-wracking chills, skin feeling like it might split from the fire inside him, head pounding and consumed by the waves of pain that crash over him

teheranb:

Infected wound is so fine.

•Dangerously high fever, body fever ache and the constant pain of the wound.

•No contagion, so they could be hugged, be held and kissed and comforted rent free when they were delirious and drug high.

•Cleaning the wound and changing the bandage can be really hurt, but also not so much because they couldn’t even be fully conscious.

•IV and Injection and Stitching, which would be barely used when treating a flu, and needle on an arm is Sexy.

•The smell of blood and sweat.

•Aaaand in the very end, a scar as a Souvenir.

(Bonus: If a wound already stitched up for hours/days got infected then was broken open again for some reason…..

It seems that Ebola is all over the news lately, and it can be super scary. You don’t even know what it is, let alone how to get it and what it can do to you. That’s why we wanted to share what we know with you; that way, you can stay more informed and maybe a little less freaked out by the unknown.

What is Ebola? It’s an infectious disease that typically causes death. With it, people with the disease often have fevers and extreme internal bleeding.

How does Ebola spread? It can be transferred through contact with infected bodily fluids - blood, saliva, etc. - by a “filovirus” (the Ebola virus). It is not airborne. We do not know its host species yet.

What are the symptoms of Ebola? The symptoms include high fevers and bleeding, as we mentioned. However, they also include headaches, stomach pains, sore throats and lack of appetite.

How do you cure Ebola? Right now, there is no known cure. However, it is possible for victims to be treated and recover if they are offered intensive care.

However, the cases of Ebola in the United States are few and far between. If you are sure to keep clean by washing your hands and wiping counters down, you will typically be just fine. We recommend carrying around a personal container of hand sanitizer, if that helps you feel more at ease.

Sandstorms.

The sand rubs their sunburnt skin raw, and the dust is suffocating and all encompassing. Their eyes burn with dry tears. Moreover, sand fills their wounds, packing them with a bacteria-infested filling that will surely cause an infection if left untreated.

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the pharyngeal tonsils.

  • Inflammationusually extends to the adenoid and the lingual tonsils
  • Most commonly viral
  • Most cases of bacterial tonsillitis are caused by group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus pyogenes (GABHS) - strep throat.
  • Spread through the air.

Symptoms may include sore throat, fever, enlargement of the tonsils, trouble swallowing, and large lymph nodes around the neck. Complications include peritonsillar abscess.

Recurrent tonsillitis

  • A polymicrobial flora consisting of both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria
  • Other competing bacteria are reduced - less interference to GABHS infection.
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Haemophilus influenzae are the most common bacteria isolated in recurrent tonsillitis, and Bacteroides fragilis is the most common anaerobic bacterium isolated in recurrent tonsillitis.
  • The microbiologies of recurrent tonsillitis in children and adults are different; adults show more bacterial isolates, with a higher recovery rate of Prevotella species, Porphyromonas species, and B fragilis organisms , whereas children show more GABHS. Also, adults more often have bacteria that produce beta-lactamase.

Chronic tonsillitis

  • Polymicrobial bacterial population present
  • There is likely a relationship between tonsillar size and chronic bacterial tonsillitis based on both the aerobic bacterial load and the absolute number of B and T lymphocytes.
  • Fewer dendritic cells on the surface epithelium and more in the crypts and extrafollicular areas during chronic tonsillitis.
  • Radiation exposure may relate to the development of chronic tonsillitis. A high prevalence of chronic tonsillitis was noted following the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident in the former Soviet Union.

Can anyone give me some advice what to do against the pain from an infected ear-canal /middle ear? It hurts so much, I can barely see straight and I can’t keep taking painkillers, does anyone know something? I would be thankful for every advice, I’m getting very desperate.

Preventing infection with an improved silver coating for medical devices

Preventing infection with an improved silver coating for medical devices

According to folklore, silver bullets kill werewolves, but in the real world, researchers want to harness this metal to fight another deadly foe: bacteria. Recently, scientists have tried to develop a silver coating for implantable medical devices to protect against infection, but they’ve had limited success. In a study in ACS Central Science, one team describes a new, long-acting silver-ion…
