Fun fact, that is actually a little bit based on my dad when I was in High School, though not exactly. The spirit is definitely there. And it does include a shirt.
So when I was in high school, my family moved to a primarily white suburban neighborhood. Whenever my friends would come to pick me up to hang, they’d usually call me on my cellphone from their cars instead of approaching the house at all. This was back when you had a preset number of minutes every month with cell plans, before unlimited text and data and all that, so it was a bit of a thing.
I didn’t think much of it, honestly, but one day my friends were joking around and offhand mentioned how scary my dad was, like it was some kind of in-joke that they had long shared between themselves that I was just hearing about.
Turns out that the reason that they never really approached my house or came over is because my dad would oftentimes be sitting right outside the front door on the porch, on an old folding chair, shirtless, a cigarette in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other, wearing nothing but shorts and a pair of flip flops. My dad also happened to be dark-skinned with resting bitch face (he doesn’t smile very often publicly), and he made them very uncomfortable. Like they saw him like some kind of guard dog or something.
Truth is that my dad was actually just trying to relax after work, and often that was just sitting out there thinking and smoking. He was a very very quiet person when my friends were around, but I think part of that is that, whether my dad admits it or not, he’s a little self-conscious around white people, especially weirdos like my friends at the time. He definitely had to deal with some prejudicial shit in his life. And considering how my friends joked so offhand that he was some scary dude when he was just sitting outside of his house smoking, you know, I can’t blame him.
Anyway, I told my dad about it, that they thought he looked unfriendly because he would sit outside smoking, shirtless. And he seemed sort of bemused by it at first. I don’t know if he was offended, but I didn’t expect him to do anything about it, honestly. I mostly said something because I thought it was kinda funny.
But the next time my friends came over and my dad was outside, I could see that he had spotted them in their car. Wordlessly he stood up and went into the house, and I kind of guiltily thought that he was just trying to get out of their view for a moment so that they wouldn’t be so uncomfortable
…but then came out a minute later. Except now he was wearing a t-shirt. And then he took his seat once more on the folding chair, picked up his cigarette, and went right back to staring out into the neighborhood, smoking and looking ‘unfriendly.’
He was trying. But the only thing he got out of the conversation was that he needed to put a shirt on to make my friends more comfortable.
I always thought this was really funny and while my relationship with my dad is fraught and complex for different reasons, there were moments where he did genuinely try. Even if it was just putting a shirt on.
In the end, I’m kind of glad he didn’t try to look much friendlier for those people, they were racist pieces of shit, and I took a lot of crap from them myself because I had moved from a completely different neighborhood (both in location and demographic) and I was desperate not to be a loner. I regret a lot of that. I dropped them like a sack of potatoes once I entered college and realized that I didn’t have to be around people who sucked.
