au cours des dernières semaines, j'ai eu l'impression d'ouvrir l'océan, afin de pouvoir à la fois absorber & évacuer des récits de mon corps, les semer dans les profondeurs de la terre, qu'elles se mettent à résonner dans l'immensité de l'univers.

de tous les projets que je créais/présentais, mon laboratoire de 'é, en particulier, était un processus de création transformateur, profond, qui m'a poussé·e à grandir, humainement & artistiquement.

je tiens à remercier toutes les personnes & institutions qui m'ont accomapgné·e dans ce processus: le @offtamtl (et toute son équipe magnifique); @karlitajem, Jérome Bérubé & @thisblindinglightbindsmestill pour leur honnêteté, leur engagement, leur vision, leur foi en ce projet; et le @conseilartscan pour avoir généreusement financé la première phase de recherche/création de ce projet.

over the past few weeks, it has really felt like i have moved oceans, in order to absorb & birth multiple stories into/from my body, to seed them in the depths of the earth.

of all the projects i was creating/presenting/producing, my work in progress of 'é, in particular, was a life-changing, profound process.

Kama La Mackerel recherche l’interdisciplinarité dans ses œuvres afin d’articuler des vocabulaires décoloniaux et queer. Le Morne est une montagne du sud-ouest de l’île Maurice qui servait de refuge aux esclaves en fuite (ou marrons) au XIXe siècle. Après l’abolition de l’esclavage, en 1835, une délégation de soldats britanniques a été dépêchée pour informer les fugitifs qu’iels étaient désormais juridiquement libres. Mais celleux-ci, croyant qu’on allait les arrêter et les enchaîner de nouveau, ont grimpé jusqu’au sommet de la montagne et plongé vers la mort. Dans cette performance qui se compose de rituels, de chants scandés, de poésie et de mouvement Kama La Mackerel ranime la figure de l’esclave et celle de la montagne – maintenant reconnue comme un lieu de résistance – honorant les mort·es et leur donnant une voix.

Le Morne is a mountain on the southwestern tip of the island of Mauritius that was a refuge for runaway slaves, called Maroons, in the 19th century. Upon the abolition of slavery in 1835, a delegation of British soldiers was dispatched to inform the Maroons of their emancipation. Believing that the army was actually there to recapture them, many of the former slaves climbed to the summit of the mountain and leapt to their deaths. In this performance composed on ritual, chants, poetry and movement, Kama La Mackerel revives the figure of the slave and the mountain – now a symbol of resistance – honouring and giving a voice to the dead.

My name is Kama [they/them] & I am a multilingual writer, visual artist, performer, translator, educator & I believe in love, compassion & justice.

I am wholeheartedly invested in ocean narratives, island sovereignty, transgender poetics and ancestral healing. My body of work is hybrid, challenging colonial notions of space and time as these relate to history, power, language, subject formation and the body.

In 2020, I published a book called ZOM-FAM (@metonymypress), a collection of sweet lyric poems that I wrote from the heart for the child who lives in me & for my home island, Mauritius. Should you want to know more about it, there is a link in bio!

I am overjoyed to announce my upcoming collaboration with chef & culinary artist @ellejays_ as part of Brown Butter, curated by @jamminjazzdad & to be exhibited at @aeartcentre in Kingston in Spring 2022!

@brownbutterexhibit is a multi-sensory, inter- and multi-disciplinary arts installation that pairs Black chefs & Black artists who collaboratively create an edible artifact and installation.

An internalization of Black thought, a gavage of Black expression, this exhibit features 6 pairings of Black chefs & artists, including the extraordinary @colouredconversations & @syrusmarcus whose work I have admired for so many years!

Over the next few months, Marissa & I will be working on an installation, performance & edible artifact that explores (up)rootedness & our relationship to the earth through the roots we eat & through the soil we come from as Black folks.

Exactly 10 years ago, my friend @agatharowland visited me in Montreal for New Year’s. I had just recently moved to the city.

As we were getting prepared for a new year’s eve party (at Le Petit Palais, a collective house in Villeray that I believe does not exist anymore) Agatha shot these pictures of me inside my cold Parc-Ex apartment (where we were too broke to heat up the house).

In many ways, this was my very first photoshoot. A few weeks later, I would host my very first underground queer cabaret, and that would be the beginning of my artistic practice!

This virtual statue of me is now up at La Place de la Gare Jean-Talon, in my most cherished immigrant & working class neighborhood of Parc Extension!

É is a project by @bonjourdpt that honors 11 individuals working in different fields and neighborhoods that pays tribute to their cultural, artistic and community-engaged work within their localities. I am deeply moved to be included in this project.

The project consists of the virtual sculptures & short podcasts on each of the life & engagements of the individuals!
