Relationships: Werewolf!Ransom Drysdale/ReaderSummary: Avery late entry for @boxofbonesfic’s #Beastyoumadeofme22 challenge themed around lycanthropy and the song “White Demon Love Song” by the Killers.
You work on the side, house sitting. When your friend Meg puts you in touch with her cousin, Ransom Drysdale, you’re intimidated by the man, at first. But you land the job for a handsome fee and staying in the upscale house isn’t a hardship, right?
But there’s a beast loose in Boston, killing late at night. And the strangest things are happening as you stay at Ransom’s house…
~~~
The dying sun cast big shadows on the road as you drove. The narrow country road was lined with ancient trees, the tangle of branches forming what looked like giant spiderwebs on your path. You shivered even though the heat was on in your car. Spring was hanging on to winter’s chill for all it was worth this year.
Or maybe the cold wasn’t why you were shaking.
You did house sitting as a side gig to earn extra money. It helped pay off the crush of student loans. It also helped you keep your mind occupied, kept you from focusing on all the Xs on the calendar on your wall, marking the days since Jackson left you.
Admittedly, you hadn’t taken a job since the killings started. There’d been three since the year started on the outskirts of Boston. Three young women like yourself, bodies found in different random locations, bodies torn asunder. According to news reports, the deaths were caused by an animal of some kind. Animal DNA had been found on the bodies.
Now it was April and there was still some beast out there picking off people. Mankind was so busy expanding their turf that wildlife had to come to your world for food with disastrous consequences. Tensions were high in the city and beyond.
Worst of all was that inner voice telling you to turn down the job, to find some other way to make ends meet. Turn the car around. Go home.
Werewolf Ransom come and get itttttt!
This made me ravenous!! It was spooky but sexy at the same time
I knew he was the one responsible for the murders, but the fact that he has to kill in order to return to his human form was such an inventive twist! And the reveal that the reader had some werewolf lineage in her as well…. So good!!
Thank you so much! We’ll take a closer look at him and his family coming up very soon.
I’m so glad you liked this one.
Book Review: A perfect weekend read!
Arc Review of ‘Soul of the Sorceress’ by Cassandra Diviak-@queen-kass-the-writer
I’ll keep this review spoiler free, but in Soul of the Sorceress we’re back in Runswick with Cordelia and Percy! I have to admit to having missed these two, so I was looking forward to settling into this second book in the Shadow and Soul series.
Arc Review of ‘Soul of the Sorceress’ by Cassandra Diviak-@queen-kass-the-writer
I’ll keep this review spoiler free, but in Soul of the Sorceress we’re back in Runswick with Cordelia and Percy! I have to admit to having missed these two, so I was looking forward to settling into this second book in the Shadow and Soul series.
While the book opens quickly on our two main characters, it’s made apparent early on that this book has not been written for new readers in mind. If you pick this book up without realising it’s book two, you’re going to find yourself very lost, very quickly. There’s little-to-no recap, and it has sections that allude to character histories that, without context, simply mean nothing to the reader but, honestly, I’m nitpicking. This is a second book, and it has deep lore, established backstory and character histories that I was aware of going in.
Despite these small areas of potential improvement, Cassandra’s skillful storytelling pulls us into a world of magic and romance very quickly. I devoured this book in just a few hours, but it’s got a lovely pacing that lends its content to a quiet evening and a glass of wine, or a relaxed weekend perusal.
There is intrigue and high stakes, but you never feel pushed to rush the story. It’s cleverly interspersed with periods of soft romance, and quiet affection between Cordelia and Percy and despite my ever growing desire to understand the motivations behind the other players on the board, and what allies or dangers they might turn out to be, it was my love of Percy and Cordelia’s relationship that truly captured my attention throughout.
A gorgeous addition to the series, and I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for the next installment to add to my collection!
