穴守稲荷神社　（東京都練馬区旭丘1-20-5)

Anamori Inari Shrine (1-20-5 Asahigaoka, Nerima, Tokyo)

I stumbled across this unusual shrine while biking from Ikebukuro to Nerima. I’ve never seen a shrine built into a house (and a somewhat modern house at that). After researching the name Anamori Inari Shrine, I found that there is a quite large and famous Anamori Inari Shrine in Ota ward, and that this house serves as a local branch office with an extremely small shrine attached to the front. 

This has got to be the strangest shrine I have encountered to date. Has anyone else ever seen a shrine like this?

The record breaking 21cm snowfall colloquially known as snowmageddon occurred one year ago today.

I really want it to snow like this again in Tokyo, but I’m afraid this year has been too warm and it seems unlikely to happen. 

On this day several people at my office left early to avoid the commotion at the stations, as trains are delayed sometimes indefinitely when there is heavy snowfall in Tokyo (snow is uncommon in Tokyo and public response to even the tiniest of flurries is, well, inept). I left the office at the regular quitting time and trains were still running with some short delays. I think the snowfall really picked up as I arrived at my station where I took these photos, so the timing for me worked out perfectly. Though I do remember the next morning walk to the station being perilous as everything was frozen and super slippery.

When i first went to Amanohashidate 天橋立, the famous pine-covered sandbank in northern Kyôto prefecture, it was, well, pretty rainy. But since Kyôto University spent a lot of money to get us in a pretty nice Ryôkan 旅館 and arranged some pretty interesting meetings with people protecting the pines and the sandbank from general erosion, there was nothing to complain and a lot to learn.

This time we were more lucky. Since for the first time I traveled with the Japan Rail Pass, we took the Limited Express Hashidate from Kyôto. It does not cover the part between Fukuchiyama and Amanohashidate, but you can obtain a supplementary ticket in the train. We opted for the Amanohashidate Pass. It was 1600 Yen per person and offers some interesting features beside the train ticket: 2 hours bycicle renting, a boat tour across the bay and a free ride on the lift. All in all it is a really great deal.

There are also some shrines and temples among the way that are worth a visit. And of course the famous matanozoki 股のぞき, looking through your own feet upside down to make the sandbank look like a bridge to heaven. You need a surprising amount of imagination to see it, however.

懲りずにまた撮影会をしてしまいました。

というのはウソでコッチがもともと決まっていた撮影会。今回も@masachiさん、もうひとりのメンバーNさん（仮名）と私の何時ものメンバーでございます。

案の定集合時間まで待ちきれない＠masachiさんと私、集合場所近くの巨木さんにて撮影スターと相成りました。

…なのに巨木さんを撮ってねえじゃん。

We had another photo session.
This time it was @masachi, another member N-san and myself, the usual members.

As expected, @masachi and I couldn’t wait until the meeting time, so we started taking pictures at a huge tree near the meeting place.

…but you didn’t take any pictures of the giant tree.
