Alexandria tugged silver sardines onto the shore
a disappointment she witnessed by the sand
an hour spent in wait
for the net to reach land
by the transgressing microbuses
coughing death into her sea,
we waited and watched
and tiny silver sardines twinkled
under the clouded sky,
I worshipped her
while watching her shake
from utter disappointment.I cried elegies for my city
when a woman with a tied up head
lost a shoe to a puddle by tramVictoria,
granny begging in brown chuckled
sense of humor alive
despite the cataract clouding her life
and the grit in her crumbling teeth. My people have nothing but Allah
and comedy
keeping them sane.A boy who spoke emotional tales of science
muttered fears between sedative clouds.
On her boulders he rummaged
through theories to back up all of God,
and I understood my self,
the events around
and inside of us
were beginning to make sense.Give me one day
where I need not maneuver cautiously
through my own streets,
no mother’s-body-part cussing
in the name of Allah and vindicated manhood.
One day without dreams of meat
being unrealistic, one day
without the hunger that’s lead to animal methods
of survival, immorality normalized.Protect me for one day, Alexandria,
carry me through your moody Sea,
don’t let me drown—
Don’t drown me,
don’t drown me, Alexandria.—

In 1996, Jeff Buckley did an anonymous coffeehouse tour performing solo under a different pseudonym each night. I only heard about it years later. Pittsburgh was on the list, the infamous Beehive Coffeehouse in Oakland, but it was the only show that was cancelled. I vaguely remember an interview with his tour manager, whom he did the tour with, saying it was cancelled due to weather. I was trying to remember the name he was gonna use, but couldn’t: the Halfspeeds! Luckily I found a scrape of an old website mirrored somewhere, the only mention I could still find on the web of that cancelled show.
*December 1996 / Solo Phantom Tour - “2 guys in a car with a guitar”

Sat 14-Dec “Washington, DC” Misha’s Martha & the Nicotines
Sun 15-Dec “Washington, DC” Soho A Puppet Show Named Julio
Most of these venues are gone, such is the fate of indie venues. Spot Coffee is still in Buffalo, this would have been the original location on Chippewa & Delaware, which opened in ‘96. There’s a bootleg of that set called ‘Father Demo’. Kendall Square isn’t a venue, but a neighborhood, but the former Kendall Cafe at 233 Cardinal Medeiros Ave, Cambridge, claimed Buckley. Misha’s is still around in Alexandria, VA, but has moved locations. I actually used to drive down & hang at Soho Tea & Coffee in DuPont Circle, DC in the 4-5 months I was in DC for a design contract.

‘hypatia’ - julius kronberg (1889)
hypatia is not only famous for her academic feats, though they are impressive in themselves; she was the greatest mathematician and astronomer of her time, as well as the leader of the neoplatonist school of philosophy in alexandria. on top of this, she spectacularly overcame the profound sexism of her society. however, it’s likely that her death is more relevant to this painting - she suffered an unspeakably violent and cruel death at the hands of an ignorant christian mob of men. the terrified expression captured by kronberg could perhaps serve as foreshadowing to this event, as well as the small crucifix being paraded in the background. hypatia’s remains were burned in a mock of pagan sacrifice, her death marking the triumph of christianity over the paganism of the ancient world.
