A Karnak obelisk, of which only the top third remained, that had lain on the ground in Luxor for many centuries was recently re-erected to its full size as part of Egypt’s promotion of this archaeological wonder park.

Marvel Team-Up #11 (Wein/Mooney, July 1973). The Inhumans accompany Spidey back to the 23rd century on a mission to rescue the Avengers from Kang the Conqueror and Zarrko the Tomorrow Man. I’m trying to read these books in six-month chunks now, just to vary things up — it’s kinda working except the Inhumans’ appearance here spoiled/teased something in Fantastic Four comics I haven’t gotten to yet…

Fantastic Four #132 (Thomas/Buscema, Mar 1973). Reed, Ben, and Medusa return to the Inhumans’ Great Refuge, just in time to the Alpha Primitives’ champion… Omega! A pretty satisfying adventure with a status quo shift: Crystal chooses Pietro, Johnny grows up a little and wishes her well, Medusa claims Sue’s vacant spot on the team, and the whole gang get upgraded costumes. (Except Reed, who loves being Mr Fantastic.) These new costumes are silly and I suspect they won’t last long.

Fantastic Four #131 (Thomas/Andru, Feb 1973). Johnny finds Crystal shacked up with a recuperating Pietro. Their lovers’ quarrel is interrupted by an uprising of Alpha Primitives. I guess I forgot that the Inhumans have an enslaved subterranean working class. This sucks??

Fantastic Four #130 (Thomas/Buscema, Jan 1973). Reed can’t keep up with women’s lib so Sue takes Franklin and leaves. Just as Franklin’s starting to show hints of his own powers, too! Gosh, after reading a good chunk of Buscema’s art with Vince Colletta’s sketchy inks, I’m really so impressed with Joe Sinnott’s more elegant ink. It really retains Kirby’s sense of polish and kinetic drama.

I’m taking my friends to see Ride The Cyclone tomorrow.

Do I prepare them for “Space Age Bachelor Man” or do I let them go in blind and just see how they react?

There’s a big moon battle here where X-Factor and the Inhumans take on Apocalypse and his forces, which confusingly consists of multiple Apocalypses. The art is great, and as X-Factor reminisces about their last big moon battle, it dawns on me for the first time all of the original X-Men were actually present when Phoenix died except Iceman.

I don’t know how I didn’t realize that until now. Oh, and those extra Apocalypses turn out to be decoy robot Apocalypses, and the real Apocalypse is now some kind of bloated Peter Griffen looking Apocalypse.

Again I have to ask, why does Apocalypse need all these decoys and henchmen and soldiers. He could single handedly kill all these people in about 2 minutes. (X-Factor #67 – June 1991)

Isn’t this how it always goes in comics. No, our heroes did not die in the obliterating atomic space explosion that happened at the very end of the last issue. They conveniently wrapped themselves in a telekinetic life support bubble. Within the vacuum of space. And then the Inhumans saved them. I don’t know why I get so worried about these superheroes! Nothing bad ever actually happens to them! Even Ship is still alive somehow, and they’re the one that blew up!!

Sigh ok whatever, convenient plot. Why not. It’s been a while since we had a moon battle anyway. (X-Factor #67 – June 1991)

One time in my high school psychology class, we did an exercise where everyone in the class sketched a picture of the human figure and then the instructor described a list of analyses based on what we drew. For instance, she said that if you applied strong shading to an area of the body, you may feel insecure about that area. After she said this, I stole my best friend’s picture when he wasn’t looking and shaded in the crotch, and then I put it back on his desk. Then I yelled “hey everybody look Dave shaded in the crotch on his!” and everybody laughed. This cover reminded me of that. You know, now that I typed that all out, I think I told that story on my blog before. Sorry everyone. (X-Factor #67 – June 1991)

OKAY OKAY I FOUND SOMETHING THAT I NEED TO SHARE!!

So in What The World Needs, Ocean says “keep your head down and things will look up” now this seems like a throwaway line. However…

If you listen to A World Inside, which to my knowledge was supposed to be Karnak’s number, he says “afraid you’re gonna miss it if your eyes are on the ground, so raise your head up and take a look around”

This connects to the whole theory of WHY he made Ocean go first. WHY he gave her the final vote. He KNEW she was wrong, and the whole competition was for Ocean to realize that.

We also go to the script. Karnak says, and this isn’t the exact line bc I can’t remember the whole thing, but he says ‘the winner shall redeem the loser and complete the whole’ and the way it’s delivered makes it seem like a cutoff but that IS the cutoff. Ocean is the winner. She always has been. She was in life, so it was HER job to redeem the loser, Jane (or Penny), in order to finally rest. To complete the whole.

Anyways if my English teacher lets us write an essay on anything for finals like I’m hoping since he tends to do that I’m writing it on this subject since it’s ALL THERE for me to draw points from
