Quick Reminder that if your respect for the bodily autonomy of others stops where your personal pleasure begins, then you have waay more work to do to practice what you preach. All sentient beings should have their bodily autonomy respected based on their sentience. This includes non human individuals.

Stop Pressuring Me to Take Care of Myself
I think we’ve finally hit on what annoys me most about the commercialization of self-care: the idea that if we just take enough soothing actions then we won’t be tormented by the horror of being alive. This is a fucked-up expectation to set up for any depressed person, not to mention a way to cause further shame when taking these actions doesn’t work. Depression is an illness. No one would tell a person with cancer that if they just “inhale an upbeat smell” or “do a mini de-clutter” they are on the road to complete healing. So let’s maybe let the depression sufferers, and our doctors, address the depression. And the self-care bloggers can stick to $75 cashmere socks.

Becoming disabled demands learning how to live effectively as a person with disabilities, not just living as a disabled person trying to become nondisabled. It also demands the awareness and cooperation of others who don’t experience these challenges. Becoming disabled means moving from isolation to community, from ignorance to knowledge about who we are, from exclusion to access, and from shame to pride.
Disability studies should be required for the health professions.

The Remedy: Queer and Trans Voices on Health and Health Care invites writers and readers to imagine what we need to create healthy, resilient, and thriving LGBTQ communities. This anthology is a diverse collection of real-life stories from queer and trans people on their own health care experiences and challenges, from gay men living with HIV who remember the systemic resistance to their health care needs, to a lesbian couple dealing with the experience of cancer, to young trans people who struggle to find health care providers who treat them with dignity and respect. The book also includes essays by health care providers, activists, and leaders, with something to say about the challenges, politics, and opportunities surrounding queer and trans health issues.
