Today I’m very pleased to introduce you to Juan-Luis Santana, a cofounder of an offline app called “Ke Hay Pa’ hoy” (translated: what’s on today). More than a very positive attitude, this 23 year-old Cuban impresses me with his motivation, his entrepreneurial spirit and his passion for his work.

Juan-Luis, cofounder of “Ke hay Pa’ hoy”

What is “Ke Hay Pa’ Hoy” about? How does it work? How can Juan-Luis manage to develop this kind of app in Cuba? Let him explain_ us!

“Ke Hay Pa’ Hoy is a project that offers services of cultural promotion to keep people informed about what is happening in Havana today and it will soon be in other provinces. If you want to know what’s happening today, tonight or tomorrow, you just have to open this app to find information. You can search by events, by kind of arts: music, cinema, theatre, dance, etc. or choosing your favorite artists, your favorite places, etc.

The App: Ke Hay Pa’ Hoy

“The project was born at the end of 2014. I was studying telecommunication and electronic in the University and I became friend with Sergio, a young teacher (25 years old) of electromagnetic field theory. We wanted to create something together. We started our entrepreneurship adventure with another idea that had no link with Ke Hay Pa’ Hoy but with transport solution in Cuba. At the beginning of 2015 Sergio had this cultural idea and we totally switched our business plan to restart with that!

We started our investigation doing a market analysis and building our business plan. We approached the Ministry of Culture and they loved the idea. They supported us in the further elaboration of the project, so did many places in Havana. Day after day the idea have become more concrete and the team bigger. Actually, all the founders have been playing an important role in this project. We are all very complementary. Each of us has his own qualities and defaults. We’ve been learning a lot working together for one year. Let me introduce you to everyone please!

So Sergio Fernández is the author of the original idea of Ke Hay Pa’ Hoy? His eloquence conquered many people and this is the reason why we have big supports in the project. Unfortunatly he isn’t here today.

The 3rd  cofounder is Sergio León. He’s an encyclopedia! Everyone would be surprised by his expertise in various subjects whereas he is very young (25 years old too). He manages very well security issues and he is a source of proposals for the project.”

“The 4th cofounder is Juan Alejandro Hernández, the hardest worker of the team. Tireless and always positive. More than being a specialist in development for Android, he has excellent skills as designer. He is the creator of our Facebook page.”

image

“Last summer, we launched our Android app! Today you can download it on internet and update the content via an offline or online process, it’s up to you! The idea is to give a very easy and useful tool to our users. So it’s quite easy to use but quite hard to explain how we succeeded in developing it!” he laughed.

“Well, actually Ke Hay Pa’ Hoy enables us to bring a new modern way to promote culture in Cuba. It’s more about passion than about business. It’s possible to monetize the App but our goal for the moment is to grow in term of number of users and of information, adding sport, workshop, etc.”

The great team of Ke Hay Pa’ Hoy has plenty of ideas. They are developing the App in English that should be available in two months. Then, Juan-Luis confessed me that they are thinking again about the initial idea linked to the transport issue in Cuba. Will they launch this project? Will they have another idea? One thing is sure, it’s the beginning of a great entrepreneurial story. There is no doubt, they have the passion to create.

Thanks a lot to everyone, Juan-Luis, Juan and Sergio for this interview. It’s a real pleasure to meet dynamic and nice young people! I wish you all the success you deserve and “suerte” (good luck) for the future!

Clémence.

After a long, arduous decision process, we have decided who has been accepted as a contributor to such stuff as dreams are made on, and all results emails have been sent out.

Thank you so much to everyone who applied!  We got almost one hundred applications; while it has been incredibly exciting to see so much interest in the zine, this high number of applicants has made the decision process quite competitive and we could not accept nearly as many people as we would have liked to.

If you applied and did not receive an email from [email protected], please let us know ASAP!

One of our partners, Blue Nation Review, has ponied up to send 100 activists to Netroots Nation for free!

Every year, we offer scholarships, volunteer opportunities and discounted rates in an effort to make sure money isn’t a barrier for attendance. BNR’s generous donation will allow an additional 100 people to receive a complimentary full access pass to the conference this July 16-19 in Phoenix.

Interested in applying? Click here to fill out the short application.

With BNR’s help, we hope to bring in more youth organizers, more local activists working on issues like immigration and social justice, more individuals from the Native American community, and others who can make the conversations at Netroots even more enriching.

We’ll be rolling out winners in several rounds, but the application is open now.

Just click here and fill out the application for your free pass to Netroots Nation this summer. Or, forward this to someone who might be interested in joining us for our tenth annual conference.

Good luck!

I got the scholarship! I am even more hype for my summer plans in Taiwan now.

image

I received the Global Ambassador Scholarship which exposes students to Taiwanese Culture and Language through cultural excursions, to home-stays, and even a language buddy. There’s still some time to apply. Applications close on March 31st so get yours in as soon as you can. This scholarship program is only eligible for US citizens. Also, if you don’t have a passport, go ahead and get one right now. Especially if you do hear the good news, you need to give yourself at least 6 to 8 weeks to get your passport in on time before departure.

In other news, I’ve also submitted my Taiwanese Huayu Enrichment Scholarship scholarship by mail. There’s still time to apply for this scholarship as well. Check out the online guidelines for details. The deadline is also March 31st and for this one, you have to mail in your documents. I am pretty sure the items have to be in their office by this date, not mailed by this date. Once you send in your items, wait a week and give them a call to make sure that they received your documents. Especially if items are coming from separate locations. They have a general info website here and if you’re applying from the US, you can learn more about the scholarship info needed here.

Good luck to everyone during this application season.

Hey everyone! We have a new addition to Staff in the RBANerds Amino

Rather than gimp, use photopea

It’s not free but Clip Studio Paint basically does everything Photoshop does, is a one-time purchase, and is on sale rn for $30(as of 3/11/2022) and is usually only $50. Legit I’ve used so many free Photoshop options(Sai, Fire Alpaca, Medibang Paint Pro, GIMP, ect.) and CSP works great as an alternate option for any of them. Seriously check it out if you have the means it’s well worth the investment.

Also Audacity collects your personal information and sells it to third parties and will give it to law enforcement so I wouldn’t recommend using it. I dunno what a good alt is but for now yeah I’d avoid it.

only the newer versions of audacity do. use a version from 2020 or earlier and youre good.

If you draw on and iPad I cannot recommend Procreate enough. It is a one-time purchase of $9.99. I’ve had to contact support a couple of times and they were super kind and helpful.

Drawing feels great and the interface is very intuitive. The default brushes are good, but there are a lot of other brushes available online. I’ve also read that you can import photoshop brushes, but I haven’t personally tested it.

Hi all!

I have been working on this concept for a while now. I want to create not one application but a series of them. Each would be for the specific specialty of medicine and then another for community health.

The Problem

I currently don’t have the time or training to create applications to their fullest potential.

The Opportunity

I am looking for people looking to create apps with some experience and want to take part this venture with me. The gig will be perfect for college students or people currently finishing up in a course on app development.

The End Goal

This is not an upfront paying job. This is an opportunity to test your skills as an app developer and after completion receives a portion of the profits that are made if any are to be made.

Contact me if you are interested with your name, experience, and a little about yourself. I’m hoping to have at least 2-3 developers collaborating and at least 1 UX designer.

First of all, we here at The Puppygirl Academy would like to wish you a happy New Year. We have two announcements to begin 2017.

You may have noticed that there hasn’t been much being posted here. Our Social Media Intern ran off after changing the password. It took us months to find her hiding in the stud barn, stiff with dried cum and fucked senseless (photos may follow).

Anyways, after a thorough bath and a few weeks of orgasm denial she revealed the password and we sent her on her way back to the stud barn. She really seems to like it there for some reason. We changed the password and hired a new Social Media Intern, and as we get her up to speed we should start posting again.

Secondly, we have uploaded an application for entry to The Puppygirl Academy, which can be found here. Aspiring puppygirls are invited to apply, and we look forward to reading your applications.

This weekend I attended the first annual HackTech hackathon in Santa Monica, California. It was a solid hackathon and I’d like to take the chance to share the project that I worked on, as well as some of my thoughts about the event itself.

The project

Amio was a brainchild that I had been nursing for a couple of weeks before the hackathon. It all started this summer when I was interning at Apple. I was living in corporate housing with a couple fellow interns, and generally we got along really well.

But throughout the summer, one thing just kept coming up as a friction point: milk. We decided early-on to share our milk purchases– nothing too new or crazy there. But week after week we’d go sans milk because nobody knew whose turn it was to buy the milk, or if someone had already bought milk recently.

So I thought: if only there existed an app where you could input all of the chores and shared tasks (like buying milk) that a couple of roommates might want to fairly share, and it would automatically keep track of whose turn it was to perform that task. Not only this, but if you open the fridge and notice that the milk is gone, wouldn’t it be great if you could immediately notify the person responsible for the next one?

So when some friends and I were looking for a good idea to run with for this hackathon, we decided to solve this common little annoyance, and thus Amio was born.

Amio

I paired up with a friend of mine, and we got to work on the app. I won’t bore you with the technical details, but if you’re interested in the source code you can find it on my github.

One thing I would like to mention, however, is that we focused ourselves on making the UI look and feel fantastic. We argued vehemently about views, actions, settings, and colors.

Dat tableview

To be honest, the functionality of the app is simple. It’s pretty much just a project management app with very limited task management. There are dozens, if not hundreds of apps that allow you to do exactly what Amio allows you to do. But what Amio has, I like to think, that makes it actually a pretty viable app is a laser focus on optimizing for a very specific use-case.

Chores, not tasks

I’d like to give a shout-out to Jesse, who was my co-developer for the project. He handled the visual design of the application and the view implementation, while I handled the backend and app logic. Also some props to DanielandKabir who fully intended to help out with the project, but weren’t able to due to technical issues.

Oh, and by the way, Jesse and I fully plan on taking this app through to the finish line and putting it on the App Store, so look out for that.

The event

As far as hackathons go, HackTech had some major strengths and some glaring weaknesses. In all, it was a solid event, and I can definitely appreciate the time and effort that went in to planning and executing it.

Pros

  • This event had over 1,000 student developers. Damn. Nothing makes me happier than seeing people my age putting their homework aside to do something real.
  • The venue was fantastic. With over 1,000 developers, I was assuming space would be an issue, but there was room to spare. That’s important when you consider that almost everyone needed a spot on the floor to catch the occasional much needed, and much deserved, power-nap.
  • The sponsor list was long and loaded. Pebble was there sporting 50%-off refurb devices in an effort to further populate their upcoming Pebble-specific app store release. Even though my app had nothing to do with Pebble, I snagged one and I’m super excited to dig into it.

Cons

  • Internet. It’s pretty typical for hackathons to have spotty WiFi, but this was admittedly pretty horrible. Apparently it was more because of all of the WiFi hotspots than the incoming bandwidth, but either way, it was a big issue.
  • Food. Again, much love to the HackTech folks, but this is crucial. Finding food for 1,000 people is tough, but frankly it’s only customary to have an unlimited supply of energy drinks, soda, coffee, snacks and sweets at a hackathon. The meals were great, but the supply of snacks and drinks was almost non-existent.

In all, it was an awesome event. Hackathons are a fantastic way to learn, build, and discover. I’m excited to keep working on Amio, and I’m excitedly waiting for my next hackathon.
