Sorry it’s been so long! There’s been a ton of awesome and amazing things going on in my life.
On the writing front, I’m now a regular writer for Medium — which has resulted in a *major* boost to my writing income. (*If you’re a writer who is not writing on Medium, I don’t know what you’re doing.*)
On the *other* professional front, we’ve finally released our drag event app — @dragr — and are over the moon with the reception it’s receiving in the community.

ok i’ve been rly busy nowadays + i’m rly sorry that i haven’t been able to sit down and just answer a bunch of asks in my inbox rn ;; however, i took a quick glance at it and a lot of them are abt your individual schedules / classes / extracurriculars / mental health / situations + asking if this is good enough for college or if it’s good enough for a prestigious college. i think it’s easier for me to address all of those general questions into one quick post, so here we go:
there is no set formula to get into college.there is no magical combination of classes or set of extracurriculars or certain gpa that will automatically land you in college. the things that really matter is how you present yourself in your application (ie: essays, sometimes extracurriculars) and what the college is really looking for that year. the first part is something you can influence; the second part is something left up to probability and the types of applicants applying that year.
grades / gpa / scores: i’ve also mentioned this in my college video, but gpa / grades / scores are not the sole determining factor in your application. there are other aspects to the application such as the essays, the recommendation letters, the extracurriculars, etc. it’s possible to bounce back from a bad year, it’s possible to put yourself in a different light, it’s possible to make other aspects of yourself shine more than a single number on your application.
extracurriculars: you do not have to have as many ec’s as me. in fact, i’d discourage it because i felt like i only had a shallow involvement in them since i was stretched too thin + i would like to repeat my sentiment about choosing the few that you care about and sticking with them rather than trying to do every single one on the planet. if you don’t have any extracurriculars, you could pick a few up. if you don’t have any clubs or things that interest you, just pick one and do it anyways because you might end up finding something that you really enjoy. if you’re starting late (junior or senior year), i think it’s still worth it to join, but make sure you really involve yourself in it instead of just joining for the sake of putting it on your college app.
classes: take on as many honors / ap classes as you can handle but no more than that. sure, you might think that colleges will want to see it on your transcript, but if it ends up severely impacting your grades / gpa, you might want to decide whether or not it’s worth it. i know i said gpa / grades don’t matter as much, but they’re still a part of your transcript. show that you can handle a lil more but don’t purposefully make yourself suffer needlessly.
the “i don’t think i’m good enough for this college” mentality: ditch it. ditch it as fast as you possibly can. i don’t care what you’ve done or what classes / scores / extracurriculars you have. ditch this mentality as fast as you possibly can. i know it’s easier said than done, but truly, this kind of mentality has a tendency to bleed into your essays and interviews and prevent you from advertising yourself as best as you can on your application. ditch it and start focusing on the good parts about yourself. if you can’t find any, ask someone else and then focus on that + highlight it in your essays. show why you are a compelling candidate, and if you can’t find a reason, then make one out of your experiences. arrogance isn’t fantastic, but excessive modesty will hurt you in the process just as much.
mental health: this is written in the description of my ask box and in my faq, but please don’t send me messages about depression, suicide, etc, especially if they’re detailed because they are triggering for me and generally remind me of terrible memories that i’d rather forget. however, i will tell you that it is possible to recover and bounce back. that requires you to take the initiative and reach out for help though. from my personal experience, reaching out and telling someone that you trust about your fears and your struggles and finding help has been immensely helpful. the problem doesn’t go away if you ignore it. in fact, it generally tends to get worse. stop suffering in silence, and reach out. i know it can be scary, but you gotta do that in order to start the recovery process.

Since the company is about constant regeneration and evolution, Sagmeister and Walsh developed an application that allows them to import any SVG file so they can easily create new patterns and illustrations over time as needed. “Member ?” is a South Park zine projecy around the theme of memory and nostalgia (free interpretation). It can be fun, sad, sentimental, positive, the choice is yours ! I’m currently sitting in the library’s quiet room, with the intent to study, finding myself working on my transfer application.
I feel really sad, writing this, in this somewhat beautiful library. I feel very disloyal and rude writing my transfer application essay here. I feel bad writing it in general. I should be studying, that’s why I came here, but I can’t focus. All I want to do is write this damn essay.
I don’t really know what about this school I don’t like. I’m not sure why I don’t feel like this is me, why I don’t feel that this is where I’m meant to be. Everyone talks about how their university “is home” and how they just knowthey belong there. It’s been almost a month since classes started, so maybe that sense of belonging-ness will develop after time. This is one of those things where someone will pipe in and say, “only time will tell.”
Except I don’t want time to tell. I’m extremely impatient and hate the idea of waiting for something that may never come, especially something so intangible as feeling like I belong, like this is meant to be. Who knows, maybe I’ll end up transferring somewhere and feel even more out of place there.
But, for right now, writing this essay is really hard. I want it to sound great, but I know in the back of my mind that there is a very little chance that I will be accepted. With the amount of undergrads already at my dream school and number of transfer applicants and my academic history, I don’t see a whole lot of light at the end of the tunnel. It’s still worth a try.

Today I’m very pleased to introduce you to Juan-Luis Santana, a cofounder of an offline app called “Ke Hay Pa’ hoy” (translated: what’s on today). More than a very positive attitude, this 23 year-old Cuban impresses me with his motivation, his entrepreneurial spirit and his passion for his work.

What is “Ke Hay Pa’ Hoy” about? How does it work? How can Juan-Luis manage to develop this kind of app in Cuba? Let him explain_ us!
“Ke Hay Pa’ Hoy is a project that offers services of cultural promotion to keep people informed about what is happening in Havana today and it will soon be in other provinces. If you want to know what’s happening today, tonight or tomorrow, you just have to open this app to find information. You can search by events, by kind of arts: music, cinema, theatre, dance, etc. or choosing your favorite artists, your favorite places, etc.

“The project was born at the end of 2014. I was studying telecommunication and electronic in the University and I became friend with Sergio, a young teacher (25 years old) of electromagnetic field theory. We wanted to create something together. We started our entrepreneurship adventure with another idea that had no link with Ke Hay Pa’ Hoy but with transport solution in Cuba. At the beginning of 2015 Sergio had this cultural idea and we totally switched our business plan to restart with that!
We started our investigation doing a market analysis and building our business plan. We approached the Ministry of Culture and they loved the idea. They supported us in the further elaboration of the project, so did many places in Havana. Day after day the idea have become more concrete and the team bigger. Actually, all the founders have been playing an important role in this project. We are all very complementary. Each of us has his own qualities and defaults. We’ve been learning a lot working together for one year. Let me introduce you to everyone please!
So Sergio Fernández is the author of the original idea of Ke Hay Pa’ Hoy? His eloquence conquered many people and this is the reason why we have big supports in the project. Unfortunatly he isn’t here today.
The 3rd cofounder is Sergio León. He’s an encyclopedia! Everyone would be surprised by his expertise in various subjects whereas he is very young (25 years old too). He manages very well security issues and he is a source of proposals for the project.”

“Last summer, we launched our Android app! Today you can download it on internet and update the content via an offline or online process, it’s up to you! The idea is to give a very easy and useful tool to our users. So it’s quite easy to use but quite hard to explain how we succeeded in developing it!” he laughed.
“Well, actually Ke Hay Pa’ Hoy enables us to bring a new modern way to promote culture in Cuba. It’s more about passion than about business. It’s possible to monetize the App but our goal for the moment is to grow in term of number of users and of information, adding sport, workshop, etc.”

The great team of Ke Hay Pa’ Hoy has plenty of ideas. They are developing the App in English that should be available in two months. Then, Juan-Luis confessed me that they are thinking again about the initial idea linked to the transport issue in Cuba. Will they launch this project? Will they have another idea? One thing is sure, it’s the beginning of a great entrepreneurial story. There is no doubt, they have the passion to create.

I got the scholarship! I am even more hype for my summer plans in Taiwan now.
I received the Global Ambassador Scholarship which exposes students to Taiwanese Culture and Language through cultural excursions, to home-stays, and even a language buddy. There’s still some time to apply. Applications close on March 31st so get yours in as soon as you can. This scholarship program is only eligible for US citizens. Also, if you don’t have a passport, go ahead and get one right now. Especially if you do hear the good news, you need to give yourself at least 6 to 8 weeks to get your passport in on time before departure.
In other news, I’ve also submitted my Taiwanese Huayu Enrichment Scholarship scholarship by mail. There’s still time to apply for this scholarship as well. Check out the online guidelines for details. The deadline is also March 31st and for this one, you have to mail in your documents. I am pretty sure the items have to be in their office by this date, not mailed by this date. Once you send in your items, wait a week and give them a call to make sure that they received your documents. Especially if items are coming from separate locations. They have a general info website here and if you’re applying from the US, you can learn more about the scholarship info needed here.
