“They were once Men. Great Kings of Men. Then Sauron the Deceiver gave to them nine Rings of Power. Blinded by their greed, they took them without question, one by one falling to darkness. Now they are slaves to his will. They are the Nazgûl, Ringwraiths, neither living nor dead.” ~ Aragorn

Thankfully I don’t have to give rings of power to my friends to get them to dress up in robes and chase people with swords. Free tacos and the chance to make some art usually does the trick.
Swipe to see some behind the scenes video of our Nazgûl shoot! It takes a lot to get a single photo. Photographer @nicolasbruno has a whole team to support him when we shoot from “fog guy” (me in this case) and horse holders to models and stunt actors. A single photo is the combined work of hundreds of man-hours. From costume design all the way to final edit, it is a labor of love we are so happy to get the chance to do!

“The road may pass, but they shall not! Not while Faramir is Captain. He leads now in all perilous ventures.” ~ Tolkien

Something I love about the way Tolkien crafted Faramir as a character is he is the perfect example of why it is better to be a good man than a mighty one. Boromir was the more perilous of the two brothers. But he failed in strength to do what Faramir did from the nobility of his heart. It was that noble heart that made the younger son of Denethor a successful leader in battle, not his sword arm. Not all are born with the physique to be mighty warriors, but we can each cultivate our hearts and minds to lead with honor and kindness.

“War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love

“War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”~ J.R.R. Tolkien, The Two Towers

As long as evil exists, so must war. As long as some prey on the innocent, others must fight–and die–to protect them. So raise a glass to the living, and hail the victorious dead!

I’ve always loved this quote. I think it perfectly honors the most noble aspirations of those who fight to defend others. It’s why we chose it for the name of our beer collaboration with @13stripesbrewery when they asked us what summed up what Fell & Fair is about. While we all wish (and fight) for a world of peace, at this time that is a dream beyond any of us. So in a world where War Must Be, and especially on this #VeteransDay let us indeed honor those who signed up to pay the price, up to and including their last breath, that others may be defended!

“From the ashes, a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.” ~ Tolkien ~

Good leaders are hard to find. They always have been. I wrote this a year ago and it seems even more true today: “Oh how the heart soars at the mere mention of the return of a good king! We all want a real-life Aragorn. Though history constantly shows us bad examples of kingship, something inside us yearns for the truly good sovereign, one that we have never seen but we know can be. We look for a king that will cast down tyrants and bring justice and peace, a king that will serve his people to his very last breath, a king that will let no evil thing abide. It is as if all the failures in kingship, point to how great it will be to have a truly good King on the Throne. A once and future king in truth.” Thanks @asta.darling for reminding me of this today.

One of the pictures that inspired this photo was a book cover by @jasonchanart check him out!

So I read the Silmarillion and this is all I could think about when reading the Ruin of Doriath, so I wrote it down.

Link:The Tale of the Ruin of Doriath

I have a question

Did anyone ever acknowledge the fact that the Prince of the Woodland Realm threatened the life of the new heir to the thrown of Rohan?

Is this why nobody mentions Thranduil? Because Legolas is a diplomatic disaster?

Strider, Aragorn, King Elessar ✨

Hello, hi, I have one thing to say and it’s Lord of the Rings

I usually don’t do fanart BUT I love Aragorn

Aragorn: you know, you don’t have to narrate my every movement

Legolas: his mouth would move but I would not listen

Faramir said fuck your storyline

‘i did not even want him’ well there’s a faramir mood

this is SUCH a writing mood omg

Strider did this to him too, wayyyyy back when. Just showed up there in Bree, smoking in the corner. Refused to leave or let the story go on without him.

Maybe it’s a Númenorean thing. XD

@lorata with some excellent Tolkien commentary over here

I love that this is a universal experience among writers.

Petition to rename RotK “Return of That Weirdo in the Tavern, I Don’t Know Who He Is or Why He’s Here.”

It’s important that the ponies were all safe tho.

This is literally the best post I have ever seen on tumblr.
