andstudioae:

AL HASIRA is inspired by the rise in the need to enjoy the comfort and ambiance of Dubai’s sensational outdoor scenes. During the time of the year when the weather conducive for outdoor activity, it is almost impossible to resist the atmosphere at a park or in the Deserts. On the other hand, when it gets hot in the summer, most people would rather spend their time out on the beach. The Idea for Al Hasira stems from the intrinsic need to seat lower to the ground when at a park, the beach, plaza or square. It has become a common practice to use a combination of mats and pillows / cushions or anything that can be used to get comfortable in certain the outdoor spaces like the beach, a patch of grass, the park or the desert. With Al Hasira, we combine these possibilities into one single panel, which encourages a variety of postures ( i.e. seating, laying and so on), that can be combined together to facilitate interaction in parks, plazas, the desert, the beaches, on the sidewalk and several other public spaces such as the lobby of a building.

AL Hasira is a multi-functional piece of furniture that can be customized to fit a variety of seatingconfigurations and a multitude of colors, materials and texture. This sleek piece consists of two majorcomponents, a base material for support and a cushion material to make seating comfortable.Depending on the client’s preference and the function of a space, the piece could be customized with ajuxtaposition of Fiberglass or Corian (for base material) and leather, rubber or wool (for cushion material) which would be suitable for interior spaces. On the other hand, for outdoor environments, in order to have a more timeless design or material option, clients may prefer a combination of a fiberglass or concrete base with timber (red meranti or teak) seating. Every Urban space is different, be it an interior space, sidewalk or a landscape, they all have their individual character. Al Hasira provides the client with the opportunity to personalize their benches, to make it unique to them and to their spaces.

plus, you can look at it in 3d!

theres a lot of viewing options and other things! theres an option on-site to take a screenshot, so you don’t have to have a program for that!

you can view it here!

Totally gonna use this for making my worlds

This is the future

Today’s map is an Office of Strategic Services Map of Madagascar. The OSS, a division of the United States government, made thousands of maps during World War II. This map was made in 1942, and then gifted to the American Geographical Society in 1945, as seen on the stamp in the upper left hand corner. The shading depicts the topography of the island.

man the Appalachian mountains really aren’t shit huh

The Rockies are new, young and virile and fresh from the Laramide orogeny, tall and lanky teenagers on the geological scale.

the Appalachian mountains are old, formed hundreds of millions of years ago before dinosaurs walked the Earth. They are ancients, elders, witnesses to half a billion years of life coming and going.

To be tall is not a virtue. To be small is not a sin. The Appalachians are eroding under the weight of time, slowly shrinking and returning to the Earth from which they sprang.

Appreciate them while they are still here.

I do want to say real quick again about the age of the Appalachians…

They said “before dinosaurs,” but we have a cave here that began forming between 450 million to 550 million years ago.

There are no bones in that cave. No fossils. No nothing.

That’s because this cave began forming before bones existed on land, and had only just started to exist in the ocean. Shellfish hadn’t evolved yet. Limestone, which forms many caves, was just starting to become a more prevalent rock.

The mountains aren’t older than dinosaurs. They are older thanbones.

see that little lump up at the top of minnesota? the sawtooth mountains? so small most places would just call them hills?

image

those are over a billion years old.

that’s why they’re so small. they’re the last ancient remnants of a lava flow 5 miles thick. the lava didn’t kill any dinosaurs. or any fish. or any animals at all. because there were no animals. you know what there was?

algae.

those mountains were 5 miles tall when the most advanced life on earth was algae.

so i’m just gonna go ahead and keep calling them mountains, even though all you need to climb them is hiking shoes and a nice afternoon. because a place where you can crouch down and touch basalt that was lava before leaves were invented deserves some respect.

The earth is unfathomably ancient, and you garner no love from her when you insult her eldest children.

not only that, the Appalachians predate the Atlantic Ocean and were fragmented. they stretch across three continents, as Atlas in Africa and Caledonians in Europe as you can see here:

the Appalachians are way way old. the fossils that ARE found in these ranges are ancient marine beings, whose fossil remains predate the anatomical structures of beings migrating to land for the first time. THAT’S how old the Appalachians are.

show the elders some respect, they have witnessed eons and are returning to the land from which they grew, it’s the kind of the passage of time on a scale that our human lives could not even begin to comprehend.

Give me ALL the geology discourse

THE EINSIEDELN ITINERARY

The library of the Benedictine monastery of Einsiedeln contains a miscellany (Einsiedeln, Stiftsbibliothek Codex 326) compiled over the 9th and 10th centuries at unknown German monastery. The two most important texts, the Inscriptiones Urbis Romae and the Itinerarium Urbis Romae, were composed in Rome in the early 9th century. The author is known today as the Anonymous of Einsiedeln because the only surviving copy of his work is located in the Stiftbibliothek; the author had no connection to the Swiss monastery. The Einsiedeln texts were redacted by a northern scribe in a clearly-legible Caroline miniscule, from either a German or Italian manuscript source.

TheItinerarium (fols. 79v-89r) is a topographical guide to the principal monuments of the city. Composed for pilgrims visiting the city, the text consists of a series of walks across the city beginning and ending at different city gates. Both pagan and Christian monuments are indicated. For most monuments, the text is only list of names with no descriptions. Many of those casually mentioned names—Theatrum Pompei, Septizonium, Thermae Traiani, Capitolium—however, grip the modern reader’s attention, reminding him/her of how many major monuments of which no trace remains today, were still standing and correctly identified in the Carolingian period.

The itinareries are accompanied by the Inscriptiones Urbis Romae (67r-79v). This collection records epigraphic inscriptions seen on bridges, temples, arches, baths, basilicae, column and statue bases, and so on. As the majority of those monuments no longer survive, the Einsiedeln transcriptions are of vital importance to any understanding of ancient Roman topography, imperial patronage, and architectural and urban history. In the few cases where the source of a redaction by the Anonymous still exists, his transcritions have proved to be accurate.

Given its usefulness, the text must have been popular among foreign visitors to Rome. The Einsiedeln manuscript however, is the only known copy of the ItinerariumandInscriptiones.Although the volume had entered the library’s collection in the 17th century, those texts were “discovered” and correctly identified only in the 19th century.

The work interrogates have landscape is transformed by intrusion on marking, while architecture itself gives way to landscape. The emergent firms give rise to Navi typologies-on one hand as a cavernous building, as the other as a seemingly estrange object. Instead of functional programmatic consideration, The figure ground drawing emphasis universal experiential qualities at the same time magnifying specific image it characteristics of the context. The installation is a three-dimensional “Nolli” object that’s straddles between volumetric abstraction of space and its relation to both geography and experiential sequencing.
