Also I revamped Fen’s old design. I’ve been meaning to do this for some time, the colors of his old design were atrocious and have bugged me from the start. And at the time I made his first design it was purely for giggles- my role play partner mech-station and I hadn’t come up with the story he and his partner in crime are involved in until after I already posted his initial design. Now with the setting inspired by 1940’s Vegas (Caldera, as the city is called in our story), Fen’s old design and clothing were no longer fitting for his story. So, finally did that much desired revamp a few weeks ago and just forgot to post it. I’m happy my boy is looking more like his pretty self now :D
Hahaha so funny story here… I’ve sort of been regressing back into my prehistoric/dinosaur obsession from my childhood, and after seeing a small joke in a review video today I thought it’d be fun to just draw a guy with a dinosaur head. But then as I was drawing, I thought it’d be even more fun to make him an Archaeopteryx, because I love those buggers.
And then I showed the drawing to a friend of mine as I was working on it, and we both got talking, and before you know it… we have a whole set up for a story planned out involving anthropomorphic Dinosaur mobsters and hitmen in a Vegas-like city. So… I guess this simple drawing turned into an actual character with a story now now :D

It was the last love song that meant something. The album dropped when he and she were dating, and the lyrics coincided with his feelings too well. The music, a gentle, uplifting thing, shuffled, chimed, lingered. Its chords beat at the same rate his heart did when she smiled across the dinner table or purred during a hug. He played it dozens of times, sang with it to her in the car, sang along when he drove alone. Then she broke up with him, and the song went unplayed.
Eventually, as people do, he found a new love, but he and the new she didn’t share musical tastes. He never sang to her in the car.
But once the song played while he was alone, a random selection from the iPod’s algorithm, and the world drifted away for four minutes as if it was mist. He was there again, loving that old love. The music strummed his heart, called out through it like a mallet against a gong, but there was no reply. It was a love song for only one, never to be answered, like the call of the world’s last Archaeopteryx, singing for a mate that wasn’t there.
Sunlight swept across his open wings. It was warm already. The gnats and midges flitted like breeze-swept pollen. Archaeopteryx was still for a heartbeat, as if waiting for a signal to activate his leap. And then—then!—flight! His dark wings pushed against air, pushed against gravity, pushed against the embrace of the earth to join the bugs and flies and go higher than those insects ever dreamed of, swooping between branches, kicking off treetops, skirting the deepening blue of the morning sky as an air-thing, even if only just for a moment, before returning to the greens and browns and humidity of August on the forest floor.

Here are some early character concepts! Despite being 90% floof, as a Tundra resident, he knits oversized scarves & hats to keep extra warm. You may notice his sling - an accident as a hatchling damaged his wing feathers, sadly making flight difficult for our sweet, soft son :’>
Colour passes! We needed more pink in our roster, so for this lil’ fella, we looked at flamingo & cockatoo patterns for inspiration. Then in his final design, we incorporated black colouration on his feather tips, nodding to colouration evidence in IRL archaeopteryx! ✨
We try to strike a balance between colourful, stylised cartoony designs and accuracy to the real-life animal counterparts, making every Paleofolk a fun, unique design challenge. We’d love to hear what sort of Paleofolk y’all want to see from us next!
